I came and saw Min for my first Japanese perm. I already left a separate review for her and it is definitely five stars. The salon itself is also five stars. The vibe here is wonderful and relaxed. They have coffee and it one time someone had ordered food and I was offered some. You can tell that there are a lot of regular clients coming in as everyone was treated like family members or long time friends. Families with kids came in and there is plenty of comfortable places to sit. Everyone here was extremely friendly and the salon is huge and very clean. From beginning to end, the customer service I received was nothing short of top notch. I purchased a Groupon for a full body sugar scrub and what a great treat. I came out feeling soft as a baby. The masseuse was very professional. She took her time massaging in the sugar scrub and wiping off with warm towels. After completing each section of my body she rubbed in a wonder oil that complemented the scrub. The room was private, pleasant and inviting. I felt at ease after disrobing and lying covered on the table. When the masseuse entered the room she asked if I was comfortable and proceeded to play relaxing music. I was so cozy I fell asleep half way through the scrub. This isn't the first hairdresser review I've left on Yelp, but I sure hope it's the last. What's happened before is I find a hairdresser and they do a good job the first time or two, then they perform a series of poor haircuts that cause me to have to leave and find a new person, which is hard because my hair is not that easy to cut. My friend Tracy recommended her stylist, John Meehan, at Frederick Michael. Upon arrival (parking was scarce due to the gym, but the salon is cavernous and therefore doesn't stink of manicure chemicals) I showed John a photo of Katherine McPhee, who had her hair in a semi-short do, like somewhere between a pixie and a bob. "So is a boyfriend or husband going to be after me for cutting off your hair?" John asked as we got ready. "Eh," I said. "My husband likes my hair short-- and it's not really gonna be that short." And then he made the first cut-- short-- very short-- above my ear. Well, what to do? He can't glue hair back on. Honestly, I was so shocked I didn't know if I liked it or not. I liked that my head felt cooler and that he had put almost no product in it and yet it was completely manageable. But I just wasn't expecting it. I was like one of those people on a makeover show who wasn't expecting their hair to get quite so cut off. I said it was shorter than I thought it would be and he apologized. It took me about an hour to get used to it-- and it is actually the greatest haircut I have ever had! It takes 2 minutes to dry and style. My hair has never been so manageable. The bangs are perfect and didn't need a trim in between cuts. I have to do almost no combing when I wake up. Everybody loves it. I look years younger and 10 pounds thinner. So basically John is a genius and you should probably just sit down and let him do what he wants. read more

I used Freddie to do my hair for my wedding. I was getting nervous with all the recent talk about Freddie and military weddings, and sometimes not showing up on time. I called him about once a week during the few weeks leading up to the wedding because I was nervous. We got ready in his salon, and since it was July 4, we had the entire place to ourselves. We brought in food, and just relaxed on comfy couches in several sitting areas. Freddie showed up early, did 8 girls hair with no complaints or problems. He was fun to talk to, and was nice when someone spilled Jamba Juice all over. Also he allowed my makeup person to work in his salon, too. We had a great time, and we were all happy with our hair. I know people say Freddie isn't a people person-- but he was very personable with us. I came to the salon to see Rose. She is a perfectionist! I've been to Rose twice for trials to nail down my wedding hair, and I have full confidence in her for my wedding day :). I can't wait to update my review with professional photos of her amazing work!! The first trial we spent the bulk of the time curling my hair. She curled my hair and set it with pins. When we let the pins out, she realized that while my hair would look lovely and curly for the next hour or two, it probably wouldn't hold for much longer than that (despite copious amounts of hairspray!). Instead of finishing my hairstyle and letting me go, she completely re-curled my hair a different way, determined to figure out how to get my finicky thin hair to hold a curl. She wanted to make sure she knew how to make my curls last all through my wedding day! My first trial lasted FOUR hours, and honestly it was a pleasure working with her the entire time. She is smart, funny, and completely in love with her profession. Once she got the curls to stay (and they looked amazing!) she created a beautiful 1/2 up-do look. I came back for a second trial because I wasn't 100% sure I was sold on the 1/2 up-do part of the hair. This was more of a communication error on my part. I wanted to try another style or two, since we had spent the bulk of the first trial on curling my hair. She tried a couple of styles, and I ended up LOVING one with braids (which I totally didn't think I wanted! I have no idea what I'm doing :P). It just felt easier and more natural. Rose is a patient lady, I'll give her that, haha. Overall, I could not recommend her more. She is professional, she cares about her clients, and she is not out for your money. So he did give me a free wedding trial, but it would've been nice to at least get some respect. I made an appointment, but he was 30 minutes late for my appointment. Then when he took me to the chair there was hair all over the floor. As I was explaining the hair styles I wanted for the wedding, he was yawning and not even apologizing for yawning. He then told me that I would have to come to the salon for the hair style I wanted rather than travel to me for my wedding day. Since then, I've found out I don't really need to do that. While he was doing my hair he burned my head 3 times, each time not being just a little burn, but really like digging the curler on my scalp. After I left the salon, my friend asked me if I got a hair cut as well. I told her I didn't. She told me I was covered in hair. I looked down and sure enough I was covered in someone else's hair. So my daughter ( 14 years old) wanted to do the " big chop". She has been transitioning to her natural hair for two years and struggling to coakes her curls back to life without much success. He works at this massive salon but has his own private suit with really beautiful art work from his artist girlfriend. I grab my daughter and we just show up in the hopes of being able to get a quick consultation. Not sure what kind of lucky stars were shining upon us but not only did we get to have a consultation with him but he gave us an for the following day. We thanked our lucky stars and Curtis. Btw. It was labor day weekend and my daughter's last weekend before her first day of high school. Well, to make a long story not too long, this gentleman surpassed our expectations on every level. A true artist and professional. He is the kind of hairdresser that hairdresser go to. I know because I used to be one, which I didn't share with him. Sneaky.. I know. He sculpted my daughter's hair into shape or perfection I should say while keeping a full house entertained. I debated long and hard if I should share this gem with Yelp but I know sharing is caring. Plus in my search for a stylist I found out how difficult it is to find a curly hair specialist here in in SoCal, the land of blow outs and extensions. Curtiv V is the real deal and a rare talent. Part of me wants to rate this place better bc they have a $7k coffee machine that spits out whatever cafe-related drink you desire much like the food simulators on Star Trek. And they have food. I love food. But I didn't come here for food. What really bugged me about this place was that out of the what, 50? hairstylists working there, none of them bothered to acknowledge me waiting there because they knew I wasn't their client. I even smiled directly at a couple of them, they made eye contact, and just kept walking and going about their business. What the F? Eventually, after several snubs, one person finally realized I must not have been there before and was looking for my hairstylist. Hairstylist I went to was nice but it was pricey and it just didn't justify having the effort to go to some massive hair stylist pen. My original hairdresser wasn't available so I came here. I called four days ahead and was scheduled for a sew-in at 9 on Saturday. I didn't really get seen till 11ish due to another client changing her mind about what she wanted (I don't blame the stylist for that.) I'm transitioning, so I didn't really know what to do with my hair. I should've taken a "before" pic, bc I looked rough and I knew it. The stylist took her took time and was very thorough with everything she did. It was a longer process than usual, but the end result was BOMB! I loved it! Shan did a fabulous job. I've been in San Diego since 2007 trying to find a hair stylist. It's not that I'm picky about my hair or anything, but I change my hair pretty frequently and haven't found a place that's done such a fantastic job that I always want to go there. The time has come for me to say that I found a stylist! Thank goodness for meeting new people who can introduce you to other people. I was so excited to meet someone that does hair. My hair was dyed ombre back in December at the Carlton Hair Salon in Fashion Valley. I was happy with it at the time, but it was bleached because it was dyed dark before. The mistake was going back there a second time to redo and darken the ombre. The entire thing faded badly and was so brassy. It bothered me so much. I take great care with my hair, but I was not okay the second I noticed random ends starting to split. Luckily, I was able to set up an appointment with Daniele a few weeks ago at the Fredrick Michael Salon. She was able to see me after work on a Friday! The salon and the workers are cute because I remember music playing, and you can hear them singing along with the songs :-) As for my salon experience, we dyed my hair dark brown and closer to my natural hair color to fix the pesky brassiness in my hair and trimmed my hair with bangs. I hardly say this whenever I get a haircut, but I adore the cut she gave me. Most of the time I have to wait two weeks to even like a cut. I was basically able to fix my hair the next day with no problems or annoyances with my hair. It's even growing out in a way that doesn't bother me at all. Daniele was very detailed-orientated when she did my hair. She wanted to make sure that the color deposited because my ends were bleached before. She also wanted to be sure I was completely happy with how my hair turned out after the cut with the length and everything overall. I was having a hair emergency as my hair was bright red and that is NOT how it was supposed to turn out. After searching for a stylist that was available asap via Salon Seat, I found Reneé and booked an appointment about three hours out. I showed up and the salon was beautiful and huge! I didn't even know it was there. I explained what I wanted and Reneé got right to work making my brassy red mess a beautiful brown to blonde ombré. I am not sure how she did it and I don't care. Her name is Sharon and she is a spunky little redhead who has been doing my hair for many years now. Sharon fixed my hair after I had a terrible color job and my hair was very unhappy. I went to Frederick Michael's salon today to visit a stylist named Shan who I've seen off & on for years. Prior to my appointment today I asked her the cost and she told me $45. I had a 9:30 am appt but she texted me and said she's running a few minutes late but didn't arrive until 9:53 am Also she was rotating me and 2 other clients so I ended up being there for 3 hours. At the end I confirmed the price and she said it was $75, I said what happened to $55, she told me she had to wash my hair... Excuse me it's called and wash and blow dry. How unprofessional. I've been to Freddy twice now for an updo. Both times my hair looked better than I imagined. Freddy's magic fingers does wonders. The first time I brought in a pic of a soft updo and when he was done, my hair looked EXACTLY like the picture. The second time (yesterday) I told him I wanted another soft updo but left everything else up to him. The staff is fun and really takes care of their customers. I will always go to Freddy for an updo.. as long as he's available and will take me. My normal hairdresser is a good friend so I can't ever leave her but even she has said that Freddy is the best for updos. You will not be disappointed. read more
