The summer residence of the Danish royal family (which begs the question: why does the Yelp listing…read moreuse the German name for the place, rather than the Danish?) is perfectly situated in the small town of Fredensborg north of Copenhagen. The place has a very country feel to it, with stables, a castle church, a long, wide, tree-lined street leading up to it, and a large park around the back. As this is an active home for the royal family, there is no admittance into the castle itself, so you'll have to accept gazing at the castle from the outside. And it really is quite pretty, more wide-spread and less lofty than you might imagine. Because you can only see it from the outside, this isn't really a full-day program, so I'd recommend combining it with the castle gardens as well. Best visited during the week, if you can, as on the weekends the castle areas are converted to a rural version of Chinatown, with throngs of tourists and lines of tourist busses spitting diesel fumes.

We visited the castle on a Sunday around noon. Semi busy and we saw a couple of guided tours…read more 4 levels that were accessible via a spiral staircase. (Elevator was available also). Restrooms were located in the lower level. Tight spiral staircase with the lower level having a Dungeon atmosphere. We enjoyed the period paintings both on the walls and ceilings (some were breathtaking). The Castle has housed the Museum of National history (since 1878) with a collection that presents 500 years of Danish history. The furniture, Grand rooms, Knights armor and overall decorations transport you back to a time long ago. My only wish would have been to have more posted information/signage about what was in view. There is also a Church attached/next door which wasn't open to the public when we first arrived as there was a wedding. Opened up when we finished our Castle tour so we walked next door and spent some time there. Organ was playing so it added to the peaceful vibe and complemented the architectural beauty. It took us about 1.5 hours for Castle and Church although we didn't explore the grounds and the garden area in the back -so would recommend 2.5 to 3 hours for all. Saw a small Cafe. Service minded people were helping visitors with questions and ticket purchases. Really impressed by this Castle as well Hillerød.

First you walk through a few hallways and the down this dimly lit spiral staircase (see picture) then you arrive in the dungeon! All arched brickwork, real candles on the tables to add to the ambiance and they have live music most nights. The two girls behind the bar were great, we ordered two beers and enjoyed the ambience.

We had: Fried Scallops with cauliflower, lemon and almons Crown of Lamb with beetroot, chervil and aromatic sauce Baked Alaska with licorice, lemon og flaming pastis (depicted on video) A nice little 3 course menu that we received the sunday we choose to celebrate. Everything was neatly prepared using seasonal commodities. The flaming dessert was a funny little way to end it all. Neatly done for a place that use to be a deserted ruin, but has been neatly rebuild to host this restaurant in the cellar. I will definitely return, maybe book a suite in the hotel upstairs, use the spa and dine a couple of times :-)

Pretty cool to walk around and learn some things. Very interesting how they made this structure…read moreunderground's. Lots of different angles in the floors and an interesting use of space. We actually got a little vertigo or something because the floors are not level in areas and it messes with your equilibrium I think. There is a little kid area that is probably great for little ones. Went here on the Copenhagen Card pass and it was worth it.

Thus, visiting Kronborg Castle was a highlight. First a little history, Frederick 2nd became King and married his 14 year old cousin, Sophie. Scandal, nah, not in those days.He wanted to build a castle that would be the envy of Europe and thus he did, Kronborg. Now, there are no historical facts that confirm that Shakespeare visited this castle. It is believed, the actors who performed in his plays did visit this castle and regaled William with stories and that is how Hamlet was conceived. Next, the castle...absolutely stunning ( I would like to believe that somehow I had relatives born in this era and the castle is in my blood). There are specific points where visitors can visit: Cannon Tower( 145 steps to the beautiful scenic views and you can see Sweden from here), Castle Kitchen,Chapel, Dance Hall. There are 45 minute tours that a guide will give you an overview of Castle and a 15 minute talk about how the Castle came to be started in the 1420's. I participated in the 15 minute overview and the staff member really gave a great history; I didn't know that Sweden and Denmark were at war with each other for centuries. The grounds are magnificent; there are steps to climb to get the scenic view of the sea. There are cafes, galleries and gift shops you can visit. I spent a pretty krone on some beautiful mementos. The entire staff were wonderful, knowledgeable and kind. Thank you! I highly recommend visiting Kronborg Castle when you visit Denmark. How to get here: Fly to Denmark, take Regional Train to Helsinor station then catch bus outside station. The bus ride is 5 minutes (1st stop). Or you can walk to the Castle, around 10 minutes. TO BE OR NOT TO BE... Alright, let's dive in!…read more We visited this magical place during our trip to Copenhagen, and it left us in awe. Purchasing tickets online was a breeze, and checking in when we arrived was seamless. From the stunning bridges to the breathtaking interiors, every part of this place was beautiful. Navigating inside was straightforward, and we were amazed by the architecture and how well the castle has been preserved. One of our favorite parts was the underground area--it was such a fascinating and unique spot to explore. The gift shop was also impressive, offering a wide variety of souvenirs to take home. Overall, it was an unforgettable experience that I'd highly recommend!

A very picturesque park, enclosing the royal family's summer residence. Kind of consists of two…read moreparts, a very pruned and trimmed park, and a more free-growing, forest-like area. The park area feels almost like a (very) small version of the gardens at Versaille, with it's symmetrical patterns and neatly trimmed bushes and trees. There isn't a lot of activities to be undertaken in the park area, it really lends itself best to a Sunday stroll. Parts of the area is closed off to the public, for obvious reasons.
