Today I got a new barber and his name is Freddy. Since I moved to the neighborhood in 2016 I've been methodically auditioning barber shops trying to find a great one near home. Without naming names, I count 7 other barbers on Yelp that I've tried at least once and left feeling "meh," about cut I came home with. Freddy asked me I wanted and how long it'd been since I had a cut. He worked quickly and told me many delightful stories about his 40-some years cutting hair in this location. Soon, Freddy handed me a mirror and consulted me on the length. When I told him I'd like it a little shorter, he agreed but he always likes to ask because he "can't cut it longer." When I walked in with this cut the wife said, "WOW." Freddy is a total pro and seems like a swell guy to boot. This barber shop is tucked away on Western and Lake so if you are not looking for it, you are going to miss it. Freddy has a great personality and was very courteous. I rode my bike to his shop and he urged me to bring my bike in because he has prior experience with folks who are up to no good. We had a decent conversation and he gave me a good haircut. Couldn't imagine a better haircut experience. I just moved to LA and figured I'd be essentially forced into the fade and other typical buzz cuts so many dudes have here, and like most barbers have for their Yelp photos. But Freddy is a true professional - an artist, in fact. Otherwise known as a stylist, which is harder to find and often more expensive. I actually caught him a little after closing time - his door was open despite the window's Closed sign, and he was just chillin' on one of the waiting sofas, probably dreaming about a nice Saturday night dinner he deserved from another day's work. I stopped in the doorway and asked if I could make an appointment. Freddy smiled, said yes, and invited me to take a seat. Sometimes you just know it's going to go well from the start. Freddy asked what I was looking for, and after I said I was probably just wanted a trim and better shaping, he said I'll get exactly that. Then he proceeded to tell me - and show me - how he's no ordinary barber. I asked for his advice given my thick, semi-curly mop, and Freddy smiled a genuine SoCal smile and explained how it's actually done and should be customized to each head of hair -- and face. The dude has paid attention in the last 38 years, and knows the realistic - and best - options for each customer. I've never experienced that before despite often asking it, but I believe him, especially now that I'm walking around with proof. He'll stop at certain lengths along the way and get your input, but will stop and caution you if you reach a point he no longer thinks will work for you based on your hair and the shape/size of your head, ears, and face. Brilliant, refreshing, and reassuring. Did I mention the free, quality tequila shot and the amazing-sounding old school high-end 1940s radio? Best of all, there's no rush - Freddy takes an hour for each customer, occasionally maybe 40 minutes if it's a minor trim or you somehow were in a hurry. He has years of experience and is great with communication & knowing what you want. He's also super flexible with scheduling, I've done quite a few last minute appointments and he also opened the shop on Sunday (normally closed on Sundays) so that I could get my hair cut in time for a wedding! I called him after I parked because I had trouble finding his shop (it's a little hidden) and he actually walked outside to find me. He even gave me a cold bottle of water when I asked if he had anything to drink.
