My husband finally got his quinquennial hair cut recently and was lucky to walk in and schedule an appointment shortly later that day. (Rambling backstory: hub's former barber had closed and I had wanted him to go to my also uber-talented friend...she is not a barber but a stylist/bayalage specialist in Studio City; I have not seen her or anyone in years and currently also look like a chia pet gone wild or poorly aging Rapunzel. Anyway. Hub is always busy with work and needed to go somewhere local right before a work event and preferred a barber.) So I went to yelp and that's how we found this fine local establishment minutes away from home. When he returned, I almost wept because he looks so beautiful. I can see his face now. Although I had wanted him to keep his long silver locks and shave his wild beard (it had the bounty of Nebudchanezzar's but the unruliness of a feral poodle) he came back with a beautiful haircut and a nicely groomed beard that was still long (hub's preference but I am trying to make him go shorter...) and looks shaped and chiseled from all angles. Steve is a master at his craft. He is very conscientious and cares about doing a good job. Like Michelangelo, he looked at a shapeless mass (a hirsute one) and set my beaut free. Let me first say Johnny was a really nice guy and the environment of the shop was welcoming and cozy. There was no wait and the cut was quick which I liked. Unfortunately I walked out very disappointed in my haircut. I had showed him a picture of what I wanted and it came out barely resembling the picture. I asked for a fade on the side and nothing off the top. There were multiple red flags as soon as we started, he had me facing away from the mirror and when he started a chuck of longer hair (from the top) came down. Another red flag was the fact the he didn't make a guideline for a fade, any good barber knows the key to a clean fade is a proper guideline. He free handed the fade and it come out oddly shaped with WAY too much taken off. Finally, he didn't line me up or clean up the neck area. I had high hopes for him cause it was a cool place, but if you're going in for a detailed or difficult cut, this isn't it. The price is super fair and if you're in a rush this is good but I can't give more than a 3 :( read more

Don't ever go to this barber shop i took my son here today and absolutely hated it. The guy didn't even do the hair the way I said so and this place is awfully dirty like I saw the bathroom and I got discussed very bad condition I don't even know how the health department let this place to be open never going back read more

I like to keep it olde skool and came accross this place driving down Foothill one day. It's a one chair, one owner place, but Steve is great, did a nice fade. Nice cut and nice coversation. Steve the barber at Johnny's Barber Shop is wonderful! One-chair shop, friendly and comfortable and Steve is always fun to talk with. He has taken care of my 97-year-old father's haircuts for years now (yes, at 97 Dad still has a lot of hair), very kind and understanding with my Dad's dementia issues and the only barber I've found in the area who cuts Dad's hair the way he likes...even though Dad has trouble communicating about it, Steve anticipates and Dad is pleased with the results. Dad also enjoys the neck and shoulder rub after the haircut, eyes closed, smiling and so relaxed. It's his favorite outing, even though sadly he doesn't remember any of it a short time later. Steve is a local and has great stories about growing up in LA Crescenta; I always enjoy our conversations while Dad's getting his hair cut. I've been going to Johnny's for several years now. Steve, the barber, is great. He closed his shop a few years ago, and l had to make do with the other local barbers, but it just wasn't the same. I was so happy when he reopened shop down the street. He gives me a great cut every time. He's closed on the weekends, but open on Mondays, which is nice.
