Typically, of the Italian chains in the UK, Pizza Express is not usually my favourite. However, on…read morethis visit, they may have changed my mind! This Pizza Express is at a busy intersection, which means that there is no street parking next to the restaurant. There is a short-stay car park just a short walk down the road, after 6 p.m. the fee for parking is 2 quid until very early in the morning. I only know this because we wanted to use the 2 for 1 Orange Wednesday offer, but when we walked in after parking, they were busy and wouldn't have a table until 9 p.m.
On this visit, I popped in during lunch time... ok, it was more like 1:30 or 2 p.m., but as a Lady of Leisure now with no obligations, the world is my oyster! I had also gotten carried away with shopping, but if I had a leisurely lunch, Mr. Snarky could just pick me up after work and we could head back to Bolton for the weekend. Anyway, when I walked in, there were loads of groups with children, so it was a bit manic and a bit loud. I felt bad for the one staff member who seemed to be waiting on all the tables. She did seat me quite quickly and sat me further away from the noise, which was nice since I had just bought a new book and was ready to get stuck in.
After having walked outside most of the day, I ordered a glass of ice water and she brought me this tall glass full of ice and water... she knew exactly what I was wanting. The menu has changed a bit since the last time I was in a Pizza Express, but what I liked were the new items that were added for the summer! The last thing you want is something super heavy on a hot day and the new items seem to be much lighter.
I decided on the Piadina Pizza: spinach, rocket, mushrooms, artichokes, pine nuts, and a spicy tomato sauce. No cheese! Huzzah for us lactose intolerant sods! While I know I can always order pizzas without cheese, some of them weren't made to be served without cheese, but this, this sounded light and seemed like a the best of two worlds: salad and pizza.
The waitress seemed to understand when to leave me be and when to stop over and see if I needed anything. To be fair, because I was having one of those long, leisurely lunches, she could have ignored me and paid all of her attention to the other tables and I would have been fine, but it was nice to know she hadn't forgotten about me and that my water glass was never empty. When my pizza came it looked delicious! I also asked for the thin crust and it was the right choice in keeping the dish light. I thought I was going to need the chili oil, however, the spicy tomato sauce had a kick and it was great! I loved the pizza and will probably order it the next time we go in (Orange Wednesdays... we made a reservation this time).
I did order a dessert, the Summer Pudding with ice cream. I was pretty excited because you don't see Summer Pudding on many menus! Although they did have some other light, summery desserts with sorbet and fruit that looked delicious too! The Summer Pudding is a nice small portion, which is highly appreciated after stuffing my face with a whole pizza. The pudding itself was nice... tart and sweet, but mostly bread. It could have done with more fruit, but I still devoured it.
I think Pizza Express has hit the nail on the head with the summer menu items and I can't wait to go back and try some of the other items!
