Shady, unprofessional, and completely unacceptable…read more I prepaid for a three-day stay at the Wigwam Motel in Emily but decided to leave after two days. I checked out at approximately 8:00 in the morning and asked to be refunded for the unused third day. They refused to refund me. I called repeatedly trying to resolve the situation. After two or three phone calls with the manager, I was told they did not have the ability to issue my refund and that someone else would need to handle it. They promised to contact that person and call me back. Instead, they eventually stopped returning my calls altogether. I made several reasonable attempts to resolve this directly with management, but all I received were excuses, changing explanations, and the runaround. Refusing to address the unused prepaid night was bad enough, but promising to call me back and then ignoring my calls made the entire situation feel extremely shady and dishonest. This was one of the most unprofessional motel experiences I have ever had. There was no accountability, no effort to resolve the problem, and no basic respect shown to me as a paying guest. I would strongly advise anyone considering this motel to stay somewhere else.

Bed spread was from Wal Mart, sheets were full of pilly things that cheep sheets get when you wash them. The bathroom was laughable as well, Horses running in water, obviously another Wal mart find... The owners of this place need to go to a hotel that even has an ounce of class to see how its done...it was loud, as every car that went by, you could hear. The deck in front of the hotel is run down /falling apart, it has not been scraped and painted in years. The blinds on the windows were ancient and didn't keep a lick of light out... We went to Garrison after this and met some people that had attempted to stay in this Motel and the Lady ended up sleeping in their truck as she was afraid to sleep in the motel. We tried to talk with the owner about the price, but it was a big fight... this motel would be fine if it was $30 bucks a night. I will and have told everybody about this disgusting place. The lodge is decorated in a North Woods style. We had a King Suite room which had a fireplace, which we used for a short time, was clean and had a comfortable bed, though the pillows were not good -hard as rocks. The breakfast was better than I expected, they had two kinds of home made frozen omelettes that you could microwave - quite tasty, and a big step up from the Cisco premade egg items at chain motels, plus hard boiled eggs, a good selection of teas and the usual waffles, muffins and bread items. There is a small, cute shopping area that is less than a 10 minute walk away which has a few ladies boutiques, some restaurants and other stores. You can also walk to the grocery store in about 5 minutes and the golf coarse is a 5 minutes drive away.

Unfortunately I don't own a beautiful cabin with which to entertain them, so we had to rely on finding a local resort. My wife and I spent over two hours researching and calling resorts around northern Minnesota. Unfortunately, it seems that most of the mom and pop establishments have been purchased by larger investment groups and hospitality chains that have turned them into monstrous money-making machines. Honestly, when I go "up nort" I don't need or want day spas, tennis courts, and luxury cruises. Nor do I want to pay $450 a night for a room that faces the highway, as one resort offered. Not to mention the one-week minimum stay that most require during the summer months. No, I prefer a quiet establishment on a smaller lake where I can simply connect with the natural surroundings. We were so happy to have found Edgewild, a small, more affordable ($210/night when we went), family-owned resort tucked into the forest on the edge of West Fox Lake. The cabin was rustic, but sufficient. The pontoon boat we rented was great for cruising and fishing. I loved being able to use free canoes whenever we wanted. And Fox Lake is perfect because it isn't big enough to support huge crowds of people. My only two (very small) suggestions to Pete and Bonnie, the extremely kind owners of Edgewild, are to increase to number of fire pits available to guests, and to upgrade the bedding situation. To explain, we would have preferred to have had our own bonfire one of the nights, and the comforters on our beds smelled a bit musty. Other than that, it was absolutely perfect.

The cabins have been updated but still have the charm that a cabin built decades ago should have. We usually dock a boat for fishing but will rent a pontoon for a day in the lake. We've also golfed and biked nearby during our stay. The fishing is pretty solid on West Fox Lake. We can always find panfish, bass and smaller pike. Walleye though can be tricky but we've actually caught a couple right off the dock early in the year. The new owners are nice people who have done anything to help us make the most of our visits. That meant even finding me an axe to chop wood during our last stay - a great way to relieve stress I might add. Overall, I would recommend Edgewild and will definitely be returning.

For our anniversary this year we stayed at Boyd Lodge and had the most blissful, quiet, relaxing day imaginable. Surrounded only by the sounds of the leaves falling from the trees we were able to truly connect and enjoy each other's company in a way that just isn't feasible at home. Thank goodness for the rest, relaxation, and opportunity to focus on our relationship. We returned home rejuvenated and full of gratitude for such a wonderful experience. Boyd Lodge is truly a gem and we look forward to planning another stay in the very near future! We'll bring our daughter along next time though, because Mommy missed her far too much.
