I had heard about Frank's in Greenville, SC from a buddy at work. He had randomly popped in there for a cut only to discover the entire day was booked. Luckily a spot opened up within the minute and he went on what was described as the best experience he'd ever had at a barber shop. I had to find out for myself and luckily, during a two day trip to Columbia, was able to experience Franks for myself. It is everything you could ask for. Professional staff, all the ins and outs you'd want, and a great place for any male professional to get cleaned up. A must for graduate students, young professionals, and men in the Columbia area. I checked out Frank's Gentlemen's Salon on the recommendation of a fellow Yelper to find a more man-friendly location to get a pedicure to take care of the dogs. Being in the Army, wearing combat boots and running a lot can take a toll on the feet, so it's important to do your regular maintenance every once in a while. The pricing is fairly comparable to a standard nail salon based on my research, but here you also get two complimentary cocktails along with your service -- not bad! The waiting area is also a throwback to the traditional man cave: comfortable leather chairs, good reading material, sports on TV, mahogany bookcases, etc. Definitely the kind of place you would expect to see gentlemen in suits discussing the upcoming game or horse races while enjoying a scotch and a cigar. As for the quality of services, I think it's pretty clear that this place is geared more towards the haircuts than the spa services. I actually got cut up pretty good by the lady who did my spa treatment...so I think it's fair to say that she's probably a hell of a barber and stylist but definitely not a manicurist/pedicurist. The facial treatment was nice and relaxing too, and I liked the face scrub so I bought some on the way out. All in all, a good place to go, but I can't speak for the haircuts. From my observation, the barber services are fairly normal and as a Black man, there is a very specific way I like to have my hair cut, hairline trimmed, etc. A man's relationship with his barber is pretty special, not to joke around, and I'm not sure they are experienced in a more coarse grain of hair. At any rate, a good place to try out, but after bleeding out for over an hour after I went home because of the manicure cut on my thumb, I won't be back. read more

So I found this place via Yelp and Google maps. Reviews seemed mostly positive and I've been wanting a good barbershop (licensed barbers and not cosmetologists pretending to be barbers) and this place looked pretty good. As soon as you walk in, the atmosphere is amazing. They offer to take your coat and offer you drinks. They also sell cigars. It is truly a man's man barber look. My barber was friendly and seemed like she knew what she was doing. I got the full treatment. Everything was great until I got home. My wife looked at my hair and said that i am going to be pissed off. She took a picture of the back and side of my head. Sure enough, I am not happy. Lines everywhere, nothing faded in, and all sorts of jagged. I had to go somewhere else to get it fixed. I'd rather pay for a good haircut than a man cave. What I got was not a good cut at all. Incredibly disappointed by my haircut today with Phillip. It's tough to see, but this pic in a tux is how I always style my hair. My hair is super important to me, and I've been getting it done the same way for years. Fade on sides and back, and about 4" on top, with a little bit extra length in front so it can be combed up and over. Pretty simple, but I get plenty of compliments on it, and it makes me feel good to look sharp. Going into Frank's today, I told Phillip that I'd like a fade on the sides and back, and a "super light trim up top," to keep the general length but to also keep it healthy. He goes to work, and keeps cutting, and cutting, and cutting, and cutting. By the time he's done, I'm left with barely 1" on top, and maybe 2.5-3" in the front for some pitiful comb over. It's so short in places, I can't even get it to lay down, no matter how much product I use. It just keeps sticking straight up. To top it all off, when I got home, I noticed that the fade wasn't evened out on both sides!! Needless to say, it looks like absolute crap, and I'm devastated. I feel humiliated to have this on my head, and I'll be wearing a hat for weeks to cover up this embarrassment. I'm beyond frustrated with Phillip and Frank's Gentleman's Salon, after giving explicit instructions on what I wanted. I'd give negative stars if I could. read more

Ok, apparently under new management. They have a new 24 hr cancellation policy which is not transparent on their website. If you call and try to dispute their missed appoint charge they will hang up on the phone on you...nice customer service. BTW, after two weeks my $50 ($20 tip) haircut did not look any different than my $20 haircut at Sportsclips. read more

You definitely are paying top dollar for a hair cut here - but it's also so much more than just a cut. From the time you walk in you have the option of coffee, bourbon, beer or water. You can relax while waiting and watch ESPN on the big screen TV in the back. Once the cut does begin, you are shampooed and treated to a scalp massage while a hot towel rests across your face. A straight shave clean up your neck and the stylist did a great job on my hair. I'm not lying when I say I received several compliments on my look after getting my haircut. To top it all off the people are friendly. If you book appointments regularly they get to know you and in between cuts you can go in for a complimentary clean up. You can't really beat it. read more

Immediately after my first visit here about a year ago I was hooked! Columbia needed this kind of higher end hair salon for men, and now we have it. The staff is awesome, super friendly, you get two drinks (beer, bourbon, water, or coffee) included with a haircut, as well as a free touch-up in between haircuts. They also have a cool 'man cave' in back where you can chill out, enjoy your drinks, read, play chess, or watch TV. Was supposed to get a beard trim from Haley this afternoon. Arrived and had a great impression. Gave me a beer and sat me in a comfy chair to wait. Philip came in and told me Haley was running late and he would do the beard trim. I told him I didn't want any significant length taken off and to simply clean it up. Dude throws on a guard and takes off over an inch off my chin. Manhandled my head and then left me covered on clipped whiskers. It isn't even and I will have to clean it up at home. I could have done better with my Wahl at home. No scissors; just a rip and run job with clippers. Philip must only do crew cuts. So I paid for a 20 dollar beer and am now covered in whiskers. No way I'm coming back. Nowhere near the experience I havery at my usual beard barber. I should have waited a day when they had availability. I'm astonished how bad this went from the initial impression but who cares about free beer and a TV when they butcher you. read more

Update, I got a call a week later from the owner apologizing and offering a free haircut. I can't take them up on it because I'm moving out of town, but kudos to you, Frank's. Obviously I am not a "gentleman" but if I were I would live inside this salon! I stopped by to pick up a gift certificate for my boyfriend. He's been dying for straight shave but I struggled to find somewhere in Columbia that offered them. I popped by after work and met Cody, the manager, at the front desk. He was very helpful and personable and hooked me up with a great gift certificate that looks like a postcard. You can enter the "To" and write a little message. I was also provided an envelope. I also met Maria who is a stylist. She offered to give me a tour of the salon. It is clear that no expense was spared in creating the space. It is LUSH to say the least. There are multiple chairs for stylists to create their masterpieces and provide a little pampering, a raised (and somewhat private) area for washes, a shoe shine area, a private pedicure spot, and oh... the man cave. I want to live in the man cave. Leather seats, lots of wood, giant television, free wifi. I may never get boyfriend out of there. read more

Before going to Frank's, I had never experienced the simple yet exquisite pleasure of a straight razor shave, or the prepping and pampering that went into the process. The reasonable price and the promise of two complimentary drinks, however, were enough to get me in the door. My stylist was attractive, professional and courteous. And the experience of having her drag the edge of a sharp piece of literally ancient technology over my whiskers was oddly relaxing. To cap it off, I had a chance to adjust to and luxuriate in the new feeling in the oak paneled man cave while knocking back my second drink. Franks was my first stop trying to find a barber in Columbia. It was more than I've ever paid for a haircut ($40). Now that I've tried a few different places, I'll probably go back. You definitely feel pampered when you leave, which is something most guys don't get a lot. I paid $20 the next place for a bare bones haircut with no extras, and to me the extra $20 is worth: - Hair wash and head massage - 2 drinks - neck shave - eyebrow trim So yeah, it's expensive, but worth it (at least for me). read more

I typically go to Sport Clips for the $17 haircut but wanted to try this "upscale" men's salon instead. I was disappointed because I felt like I could have gotten my $40 haircut at Sport Clips for the same quality. My stylist BARELY cut my hair, so two days later, I spent $20 at Sport Clips to get it fixed up, and I realized I should have gone to SC to begin with. The atmosphere is really nice and I've heard good things about some of the stylists, but I guess I didn't get one of those stylists. Mine was really nice, and I'm sure they meant well, but he/she simply didn't listen to my needs. The neck trims are really neat w/ the straight razor. I MAY give them another shot, but not any time soon. read more

Took my college-aged son today for a haircut. It was our first time and I am thrilled to say that it will be a tradition from now onward! We were warmly greeted by Karen at the front desk who checked us in and offered us a wide array of beverage choices. We were then escorted to the "man-cave" where we reclined in an oak-paneled room, equipped with a putting green and a large screen tv. A wi-fi passcode is framed and on a side table so you can feel free to use your electronic devices at your leisure. Our wait was very brief as Phillip came to introduce himself to my son and me and then took him to a luxurious chair for a proper coif followed by an indulgent shampoo/conditioner treatment. I can honestly say that I was extraordinarily surprised at the transformation of my son, both physically and psychologically, following his cut. He walked taller and held himself higher and developed a sense of humor! Which is HUGE for a teenager!!!:) We are going back tomorrow for a facial and other treatments. As a mom, I highly recommend this location for boys, teenagers, and gentlemen. Their accommodations are amazing! The employees are very genteel and yet relaxed and fun! The pricing is excellent for the services provided. I truly cannot think of anything that could potentially be improved upon. I have been to several of the main stream hair cuts places in Columbia several times now and NONE of them will compare to the service, conversation, and haircut that you will receive at Franks. First off when you walk in you are greeted by a gentleman at the door that is very welcoming and courteous. You are then brought to the back room or "man cave" that features a big A$$ TV and 2 complimentary drinks as you wait for your turn. (At this point is doesn't matter how long you have to wait HUH?). I am then greeted by a beautiful stylist named Emma and well I don't think I need to say anymore do I? (Why are you not here yet?!?!) I did not get to meet the other stylist but if she is anything like Emma she is highly recommended as well! I will not be cheating on this place anytime in the near future and would recommend this place to any gentlemen that is willing to pay a few more bucks for a WAAAAAY above fantastic haircut! read more

They have good customer service but they definitely do not want to serve you if you look any less than a spiffy middle age caucasian man with a leather wallet. Went in with my husband that had just gotten out of work. The lady took one look and so did another African America gentle man sitting behind the counter. We walked up and they kept talking. Finally they had a chance to speak with little old us. We made a appointment for the next day and we're suppose to receive a text. One that did not come until the following Saturday. What a waste of space. A business is open to all and everyone. If not then please specify it in the door and spare people the extra cruelty of your disapproval of who they are or how they look. I had to edit my post just to show how immature supposed grown men are. My review my experience and if you did not like it you do not have to read it. Yet you only have one review and nothing else. I have been to a few salons and barbers but, as a man, I felt that the industry mostly catered to women. I was unhappy with the majority of "for men" establishments because they were chains with poor to fair employees who gave a below average haircut and to get good service, I had to go some where that gave a good haircut but didn't do well with beards. When Frank's opened in Columbia, I decided to give it a try. To say I was thrilled would be an understatement. Cody, the manager, set up my appointment and then, when I arrived, gave me a tour before leaving me to lounge in the "man cave," a luxurious, relaxing waiting area with a large television, magazines, and even a chess set. My barber, a lovely young woman named Emma, came over to introduce herself and then proceeded to give me the best barber service I have had in ages. I received a hot towel treatment with a conditioner for my beard and chin before she expertly shaped my beard and gave me a straight razor shave to clean up my neck. She shampooed and conditioned my hair before giving me an exceptional haircut that looked fantastic when she was done. I will absolutely be returning and plan to tell everyone I know about the excellent experience. read more

Hmmmmmm very mixed feelings about this place. I want to start off by saying I am used to paying this much for far less. Haircuts can be expensive in DC and they don't come with any drinks, shampoos or massages. The fade was ok. I probably could have gotten it anywhere. The shape up was non existent. My neck fade was horrendous and the back of the neck that was straight razored was anything but straight. I literally just got back from another barbershop who fixed it. Sucks because the experience is A+. Great decor, awesome staff, nice location etc. My issue other than having to get another haircut to correct everything is, if you are going to tailor to men, you need to be more than proficient in mens cuts. Especially, if you are charging $40 for a haircut in Columbia, SC. If i ask for a neck fade please know how to fade my neck. Ask me if i would like my sideburns cleaned up. Like I said it sucks. This place is really cool and maybe I just had an unexperienced barber but now I can't ever go back. I was recommended by a friend to check out the barber shop with stunning female barbers. When i walked in, the shop was empty and I was greeted by almost the whole staff at the door. Somehow i ended up with a male barber that took an hour to do the haircut. He kept repeating himself and talked really slow and low as if he was hung over or worse. I was not empressed. read more

Just experience Frank's this afternoon at the skilled and very talented hands of Phillip Dodd. Don't let his youth fool you. This kid is masterful in his craft and gets right down to business. The barber shop is immaculately clean and well organized with an open layout. A semi secluded shampoo station with ambient lighting set the tone for relaxation and rest as Phillip draped a hot towel over my face. Prior to meeting him for my appointment, I was shown into a waiting area and offered a wide variety of beverages. The room was referred to as their man cave and is reminiscent of an old English gentlemen's club. Phillip was impressively early for my appointment and listened to my desires before adding his own signature expertise, resulting in the best haircut of my life. Very frustrating experience. Arrived for my 9:00 a few minutes early. After some stalling, I was told the person scheduled to cut my hair would not be coming in - the person behind the desk was noticeably uncomfortable telling me. My options, either wait for an opening or reschedule. Only one stylist was working and she offered to cut my hair if her 9:00 didn't show. I waited 10 extra minutes and her appointment finally showed. I was asked if I could wait further, but I was headed out of town and reschedule was the only option. My question, if you can text to remind me of the appointment, why can't you call/text to tell me of a problem? Nothing like sprinting from a meeting to make the original appointment, only to be told the above. I understand things happen, but a simple courtesy call would go a long way. Considering cancelling my reschedule and going elsewhere based on the experience. read more
