It had been several years since I last ate at Franklin Square Deli, so when I found myself in the area around lunchtime, it was a no-brainer to stop in. I had heard that there was a new owner within the last year or so, which honestly made me a little hesitant at first. Luckily, the experience was great from the start. The line was short, and the woman taking orders was incredibly friendly and helpful. I asked for her recommendation between two menu options and ended up going with the Cuban. I'll admit, once you've had a truly authentic Cuban sandwich, it can be hard for others to compare -- but Franklin Square Deli did a really great job with theirs! Whatever seasoned butter they brush on the bread before toasting it is absolute chef's kiss. The sandwich was flavorful, perfectly toasted, and clearly made with quality ingredients. Between the food and the service, the $12 price tag (including a soda) felt completely worth it. I'll definitely be stopping by again! read more

Local deli that has been in business for decades. Owner has a lot of racing pictures up, including on from the 1918 Indianapolis Speedway. This place is popular and will get a line but they are very efficient and friendly so don't let that stop you from coming in. Large tables to sit at in a comfortable environment. First time in Kent. Was just going to stop at Jimmy John's, but then a local recommended this place. I saw that they had 2 bologna sandwiches, so I was sold. I went with the #1, which is bologna and american cheese. Each sub comes with lettuce, onion, tomato and oil & vinegar. I got it without tomato and added mayo. The bread was really fresh and the sandwich was a good size, i think. It could have had more meat, especially since bologna is somewhat inexpensive. Now, in my opinion, oil & vinegar really isn't a good with bologna. It wasn't horrible, but not the best combo. It didn't ruin the sandwich. Just better to do without. My husband and I took a respite from hiking in nearby Cuyahoga National Park and ended up in Kent on a rainy day. After some local shopping, we stopped in to Franklin Square Deli on the advice of a shop employee. I am so glad that we listened! The deli has apparently been in business for over 30 years and I can certainly see why. The menu includes sub sandwiches, soups, paninis, baked ciabatta sandwiches and more. Our sandwiches (Italian sub and reuben) were fresh and delicious. They were quick in accommodating my dietary restrictions. My sub was one of the best that I have every had, especially the Italian dressing. If I lived in Kent, i would certainly be a frequent flyer! After a stop at the Last Chance bookstore in Kent, OH we found this jewel of a sandwich shoppe on the nearby corner, The Franklin Square Deli. What a fantastic lunch! My rueben sandich was grilled to perfection. The meat and sauerkraut were fresh and perfectly seasoned (I substituted spicy brown mustard for the 1000 island dressing). After perusing the photographs on the walls, it became apparent that an older gentleman in the store was not only the owner of the establishment but avid race car driver! Let me just say the food is f*ing amazing!!! We had the special of the day which was a BBQ sandwich and it was hands down the best sandwich ever!! Service was very friendly and polite and speedy. I was visiting home over Christmas and my family and I were looking for a lunch spot after driving through campus when I remembered Franklin Square Deli. I would get sandwiches to go at least once a week during college and this visit did not disappoint as usual. I opted for the crab melt bagel and it was just as delicious as I remember. They have daily sandwiches and soups with a large enough menu to find an option for anyone, including pizzas and salads. The owner was working and took the time to stop and chat, particularly about his racing days which we enjoyed hearing about as my boyfriend has also raced. You'll find the restaurant has a racing theme with the checkerboard tiles. I can't recommend Franklin Square Deli enough - one of my favorite spots to eat in Kent with friendly staff. read more

We really love going to Franklin Square Deli for lunch during the week. The service is quick because it's set up kind of like Subway - order your sandwich in line and then pick it up right away. The sandwiches are also delicious! We had the Philadelphia, which is a twist on the Reuben: prosciutto instead of corned beef and coke slaw instead of the sauerkraut. Chef Mike does most of their heavy lifting on anything warm. They have a stack of 4 microwaves in the back that are used to warm up anything that is not a sandwich. Quite expensive sandwiches for what they are but they do taste good. They have signs at the register stating that there is a 3.5% credit card fee and that they paid over $45,000 in credit card fees in the last 5 years. It seems like the business is complaining to the customer that they have to pay credit card fees when it is a cost of doing business that literally every business has to pay. The ambiance is like a typical deli and meats are sliced to order. Seating is a bit awkward with an assortment of dining room tables and chairs. read more

The people working here are the most rude people I've ever encountered. I liked the food so I went back despite the terrible service thinking it was a one time thing I went back and it was by far the worst I've ever been treated at a restaurant. They act like you are dumb and you're making their day worse. They yell at the people working there as well. Also to make it a meal (a drink and chips) is 5 bucks extra. My husband had been wanting to try this place for a while and now that was have a newborn, these are the only kinds of places we feel comfortable going to at the moment in case he starts fussing and we have to bail quickly! Went on a Saturday afternoon and a few people came in for takeout orders but we were the only dine in table, so it was nice and relaxed. Both of our sandwiches were hot and toasty with fresh ingredients and delicious bread. My husband ordered one of the daily specials and I had one off the menu. I bet this place thrives on weekdays during lunch for local businesses. I'd much rather get a good sub sandwich from a place like this than a chain with cheaper, frozen then thawed ingredients. Franklin Square tends to get a bad rap because of its prices, but I think the quality makes up for it. If you want to spend $6 on a sub with lunch meat that has a rubbery feel to it, feel free to go to Subway. If you want a New York style sandwich with high quality ingredients where they shave the meat in front of you and add that extra zing with oil and spices, come here. If you follow them on Facebook, they post their daily specials, and they are affordable. The Cuban is probably my favorite sandwich there, and is only $6 on Wednesday's. I usually keep it pretty basic when it comes to my deli sandwiches, but my wife and I tried their Friday special last week, which was a pastrami marmalade melt. It was fantastic. I would have never thought those ingredients would go well together, but it totally worked. Unlike anything I had ever tasted. read more
