Because I did, in fact, encounter the administrative support staff at Franciscan Physician Network - Beech Grove Family Medicine I've opted to go ahead and document what will be a shorter than usual review for me. This particular family medicine clinic is located in Beech Grove and includes two physicians, Victoria Katona, DO, and Patrick Enright, MD. They also have a nurse practitioner who is available to see patients. After the recent closure of the clinic housing my primary care provider, I've been pursuing a new place to receive primary care. I've long been intrigued by the Franciscan Health Network and several of my friends have been happy with their care through Franciscan. Unfortunately, I'm not really in the best neighborhood to access Franciscan. My options are pretty much limited to Irvington or Carmel - I'm sort of in between the two. However, I do work downtown and spend a fair amount of time close to Beech Grove. While it's definitely out of the way, after some considerable thought I expanded my search to include areas a bit south of Indy. This search led me to find Victoria Katona's listing. She's relatively new to the Franciscan Network, but she's located in the Beech Grove area and that seemed reasonable. As the website doesn't offer a way to request via web or e-mail, I contacted the office by telephone shortly before a few days off of work. While I'd hoped to schedule an appointment during my time off, I realized that was unlikely. I called and left a voice mail. Later in the afternoon, I received a returned call. I explained that I was seeking a primary care provider and inquired as to whether or not Dr. Katona was accepting new patients. After being assured she was, quite literally the next words out of the employee's mouth were "I just have to tell you that Dr. Katona doesn't prescribe pain medications." She said something else in addition to that, but I was so surprised by the statement and what felt like an accusatory tone that I blocked it out. I hadn't mentioned pain. In fact, I'd given zero indicators of my health issues. What it felt like to me was "You must be a drug seeker. You won't get them here." As someone who seldom takes more than anything but ibuprofen despite having had over 50 surgeries and being born with spina bifida, I found this abrupt introduction stunningly offensive. It was short, abrupt, and groundless. While it may be important to share that a physician doesn't prescribe pain medications, to make that part of the opening statement is inappropriate, unprofessional, and inexcusable. There are ways it could have been addressed with basic interviewing skills. "What kind of issue are you seeking to have treated?" or, even more benignly, "Can you tell me a little bit about you so that I can make sure you're a good fit with Dr. Katona?" This would have opened the door to honest conversation and, if needed, revelation regarding pain meds. Instead, the office staff sounded rude and insensitive to someone who is merely seeking primary care and who, in fact, specifically inquired with Dr. Katona because of her knowledge in plant-based nutrition. I tried to continue, but was then informed that there were no openings until September - while this is understandable for specialists and not unheard of, I'm always a bit baffled when someone says "accepting new patients" but gives you time to die first. In the end, I opted to not schedule the appointment as I had hoped. My hope was that after a few minutes of thought that my feelings about the administrative support staff would subside and I would feel better about it. Alas, I don't. Because I dealt with staff rather than the actual physician, I am writing the review for the practice rather than the individual physician. Dr. Katona may be a wonderful physician, but if this is the kind of people supporting her you can count me out.

Having had a recent leg injury that led me into several sessions of wound care and physical…read moretherapy, I knew that it was time for me to take seriously my need to locate another primary care physician. After a false start visit with an IU Health physician I was referred to by the clinic, I decided that this was the perfect opportunity for me to explore my curiosity with Franciscan Health. I've always heard positive things about Franciscan Health and as someone with a ministry background, though not Catholic, I thought this type of setting might be a healing environment for me and my hope was to find a physician with whom I could build a trusting relationship so that I could avoid my usual avoidance of healthcare. Dr. Willfond is actually employed by the Franciscan Health organization and only recently joined the Cityway practice. Prior to this, I believe she was in a practice near County Line Road on the Marion/Johnson County border. As a sexual assault survivor, I will admit that whenever possible I try to use female providers, though it's certainly not always possible. For primary care, however, it was certainly my hope to find someone either close to my home or close to my work. The Cityway offices are right next to the Irsay YMCA just south of downtown. I work a little over a mile away. The building houses several Franciscan clinics including a lab, sports medicine, massage, radiology and others. The primary care offices are on the first floor. I'd considered one other Franciscan physician, but I got immediately turned off when the first words out of their mouths was "the doctor doesn't prescribe pain medication." Fortunately, I didn't have that experience with Dr. Willfond's office and that's definitely the last thing on my mind. While she's relatively new to this location, she did bring some patients with her and she did have about a 5-week wait for an initial appointment. As I had some urgency due to the leg injury, I definitely attempted to get in more quickly and actually was contacted and was able to get in 11 days earlier than my original appointment after a cancellation. I was impressed that they not only took note of my need, but they did the follow-up. The building does have paid parking, which is validated, but if you have mobility issues while driving you should know that you'll have to grab your parking ticket on the way in and you'll have to insert your ticket and validation on the way out. However, I found it worked seamlessly. There's several accessible parking spots up front and they are ADA compliant. The entryway includes automatic doors as this is a relatively new complex. As you enter the clearly marked clinic entrance, the reception desk is on the right and there's a couple small waiting areas. I was impressed with the intake call and they also called and did pre-registration that saved me, as a slightly spastic paraplegic, from having to write on those small forms the day of the appointment. I received a short video to watch prior to my appointment that basically explained what to expect and how to be prepared. I was taken to my room on time, or at least within five minutes of on time. The room was a bit small and not quite what I'd prefer to see in terms of wheelchair access. If I'd needed to get on the table, that would have been challenging, but it seemed both the nurse and Dr. Willfond adapted well. The rooms are bright and cheery, only minimally decorated and, of course, they have the Franciscan identifiers (a cross) above the door of each room. I don't know if Dr. Willfond had read my record in advance, but she was clearly informed and that gave both of us a good place to start from. As I specifically mentioned my leg concerns, I was impressed that she assertively wanted to see the leg as wrapped by my physical therapist. While the office isn't as well equipped with wrapping supplies, she made sure to re-wrap it and offered understandable clinical opinions and recommendations. Dr. Willfond listened thoroughly and even offered me sort of a "last chance" mention any other concerns. While primary care visits are always tight, I never felt rushed. In fact, handling the wrap was more involved than she expected but she followed through and addressed my concerns. It is my hope that she'll grow into a "safe" place for me to be authentic about my health and my disability while allowing someone to watch for health and skin issues. She was intelligent, informed, kind and felt safe but not in an artificial way. The nurse, as well, was absolutely top notch. If you need labs done, they have a walk-in lab on the second floor. This appointment was exactly what I'd hoped for and I was relieved that Dr. Willfond agreed to be my primary care physician.

They recently moved from Madison Avenue to E. Countyline Rd, in Greenwood located conveniently across the street from the new Costco. They are part of the Franciscan Physician Group. Note their new name is now Madison Family Medicine (previous name was Madison Avenue Family Practice). I paid a recent wellness visit to my primary care physician, Dr. Shelley Stiner, DO, who practices at this facility. Upon arriving at their beautiful new location, I found the facility to have a large waiting area with plenty of seating, magazines and flat screen TVs to enjoy while waiting for my appointment. The staff has always been very friendly from the front desk to the nursing assistants. Dr. Stiner always listens carefully to my concerns and offers healthy alternatives to prescriptions where possible. She is very pleasant and professional. I have always had short wait times on all of my visits and scheduling for appointments or a referral has been very easy when working with their office staff. Lastly, I love their "My Chart", web portal....you can schedule appointments see your past visits, Billings, request a prescription refill and various other things related to your healthcare experiences. They have an excellent response time to their emails that have been submitted to this portal. After each visit I receive an emailed survey of my most recent visit to complete if I choose to do so. I have always seen Dr. Stiner, but I believe they have at least one nurse practitioner and possibly more and other doctors available. For this large of facility I'm sure they have to have other physicians, but I don't have that information. Actually as I was walking out the door I saw sign for a new physician. (See photo attached) If you are ever in need of a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, I highly recommend giving Dr. Stiner a try if she is accepting new patients. I have been with her for approximately 1 1/2 years due to my doctor retiring and wanting to try a DO for my healthcare needs. Due to her high demand, I had to wait initially about six months until she was able to accept a new patient. (I had to keep calling every so often to see if they were accepting new patients). I hit it lucky I guess and on one call was told she was taking on new patients. At this point in time, I'm very happy with their services and the new location of this practice. Review #28 08/11/16
