While I was in Phoenix, I was on the hunt for postcards to send home, and my friend suggested we stop by Frances Boutique. We went in looking specifically for postcards, but unfortunately, they didn't have any. That said, Frances was absolutely adorable! They had handmade items from all over the world, cute cards, and all kinds of unique things to browse. It just wasn't quite what I was looking for on this particular trip. As I was getting ready to leave, though, I happened to notice a vending machine tucked away in the corner for Strange Collective AZ. I had seen something similar on reels when we were in San Francisco, but I could never find one in person, so I was immediately excited! Of course, there was one problem--I had left my roll of quarters at the house. So we had to leave, go get the quarters, and come back. Clearly, this vending machine had already become a mission. When we returned, we discovered that you could purchase astrology cards, temporary tattoos, stickers, and mystery items from the vending machine. The mystery items were only 50 cents, while the other items were just $1, making this such a fun and inexpensive way to get a little piece of local art. I ended up getting a sticker and a mystery item, and I got two stickers that were about as opposite from each other as you could possibly get--but both were completely unique and fun. I loved that this was such an unexpected little discovery. It was a fun way to support artists, find something different, and take home a unique souvenir without spending much money. I would definitely go back to Frances and spend more time actually shopping because there were so many cute things to look at. But let's be honest--the vending machine is what drew me in and ended up being the highlight of our stop! read more

Oy - I don't think I've been in this sweet little shop since it opened 10+ years ago but I was on foot & passing by so had to duck in. I always recommend it to visitors looking for gifts/souvenirs that are locally made & reflective of Phoenix. SO MUCH cute, fun & useful stuff in a wide variety of price ranges. I've bought jewelry, pins, patches, and keychains here but they also have clothes, things for baby, homegoods, and more. Most if not all things are local. What I love is if I'm buying a gift they do complimentary gift wrapping which is nice. Parking is rough, it's a very small lot behind the store which they share with Stinkweeds record shop, and Halo piercing. For pricing, a gold filled crescent moon necklace was $50, a large alligator enamel keychain was $9, and a joint smoking cat enamel pin was $15. Sometimes they have sales, you can always call ahead to ask. Since the cat was a gift they happily gift wrapped it for free. read more

I've been a longtime patron of Frances and recently visited during the Thanksgiving holiday. They carry some of my favorite jewelry designers both locally and across the country. The store is divided into a front room and back room, with the back room focused on kids, "mens", homewares and a mix of everything in between. The back room also carries the sales! I've gotten so many great gifts for others (and myself!) because they curate unique finds for a special moment. I typically stop here for my birthday or special occasion cards. Staff is super friendly and attentive to questions or visiting the locked jewelry counter. Pricing is on the higher end for keychains, some jewelry and women's clothing. They stock Larissa Loden, one of my favs (and affordable!) jewelers out of Minneapolis. read more

It makes me sad to write this review because Frances was such a special place for so long. It was my go-to for gifts for 10 years, but sadly it's a shell of what it used to be. It's basically a store selling the brand Baggu now, with a small selection of other things (that are overpriced and boring frankly.) I recently discovered Local Nomad which is across the street, and brings me back to the good old days of what Frances was- so many beautifully curated things that I could browse all day! Go there instead and don't waste your time at Frances unless you need a Baggu. read more

I've always been a fan of Frances, but I'm really loving the direction they've taken! I typically visit the shop for their accessories and small gifts, so decided to stop by for a birthday gift for a friend's toddler and was very surprised to see all the new styles they're carrying! I left with a cute crocheted doll for my little friend and a tie dye summer dress for myself. Everything in the shop is much more modern and affordable without losing that local magic it has always carried. I highly recommend going there for some trendy affordable clothing and housewares, many being small batch and locally crafted. Someone I know recently shared this place on Instagram and it looked so cute that I had to visit. I loved the feel in here. It was Instagram-worthy (which we all love, let's be real), had the most kind and inviting staff, and had something for everyone. The shop includes jewelry, knick knacks, clothing, patches and pins, soap, feminist-themed things, Arizona decor, reusable bags and cleaning supplies, children's things, etc etc. I bought gold cactus earrings, a ring with a gold band and silver heart, rose soap, and a Swedish washcloth. I wouldn't have picked that up if one of the employees hadn't talked me into it! I've used it a few times and (1) it's cute, (2) it's held up after a few washes so far, and (3) is stronger than it looks! Thanks, girl (who I can't remember her name - sorry!). I went to Frances for a crafting CMYE event and walked away with a new top. Yay! I've been wanting to pop into Frances for some time now. I use to see it all the time whenever I went to go to Smeeks to buy some yummy sweets. I'm glad to have finally been able to stop by. Frances truly has it all! From home goods to clothing and lots of shiny jewelry, what can't you find at Frances? I love how they support local artists and carries a wide variety of items and clothing from local designers. It really brings in a good sense of what the Phoenix area has to offer. While some items are a bit on the higher end price-wise, you can also find some more affordable things if you truly take your time and comb through the racks and shelves. This is a cute shop with something for everyone: jewelry, pins, shirts, baby stuff, drinkware, and all sorts of desert-y themed things. I ended up buying a funny pin for my husband and a tank top for myself. The employees were kind and wrapped up my purchases. This is a great place to pick up a unique gift or AZ souvenir. At first I thought the shop was closed down based on how it appeared from Camelback, but the store entrance is in the rear along with parking. With super friendly owner and staff, really quirky and fun merchandies, and a super convenient location, this place is great. Whether it's clothing, shoes, candles, accessories of all sorts, or just a greeting card, Frances has it all. This boutique is conveniently located right at Central and Camelback and has a nice big parking lot right there. So unless it is time for one of their events like Crafeteria, parking in the lot isn't an issue. It's worth it to find other parking for Crafeteria though... It's always held in early December - perfect for holiday shopping! There are tons of unique local artists, live music, and even some food trucks. This year, we swung by and purchased some great candles amongst other things. It's just a lot of fun to support local and see others doing the same. This is by far my favorite boutique store in Phoenix! They have an amazing selection of merchandise that covers everything from baby gifts, your office, clothing and jewelry, and (at least for me) all the things you don't reeeeally need but just want because they are so stinking cute. I like Frances, it is a cute shop to visit...and fun to look at all the interesting overpriced things that you don't find at a mass-produced chain stores. T-shirts for $45? Yikes! 3 rubber stamp cubes for $18? Are you kidding me?! The clothing is overpriced, even when it's in the clearance rack.... I usually buy a few reasonably priced items when I visit there. There are some items that make nice gifts and not just another cheapo thing you picked up at Target. I asked the clerk if I could take a photo, she said "yes"....then the owner or manager came up to me and made a snippy comment about me taking photos in their store... the clerk told her that that she gave me permission to do so. I absolutely adore this place! I've stopped in many times, mostly to just to stand and look at all of the pretty things. However, my spidey sense started tingling the other day, and what do you know, a sale! Of course!! I went to the back room where the sale was happening, and was super pleased to see that it was (and still is) a half-off sale. I have always wanted a pair (or thirty) of Toms, but I've always had a hard time swallowing the $60 price tag. Much to my delight, there were lots of Toms available on sale:) In addition, there was a decent selection of half-off clothing, other shoes, stuff for dudes, stuff for kids, and such. Ok, now back to the rest of the store. I love how all of their items are unique and much of the jewelery appears to be one of a kind. They have locally made candles, soaps and lip balms, stuff for babies/young children, nail polish, cards, wallets, a Merkin set (for you gals who need a little coverage), and more that I can't remember right now. Just visited this cute boutique for the first time! I've driven past it so many times and decided to go in today after seeing on social media they were having a sale. Parking was difficult on a Friday afternoon since the lot is very small and there are other surrounding businesses that share it. I walked in and was pleasantly surprised at how much larger it was on the inside. They have local branded shirts and whimsical stickers and stationery. There is also quite a bit of vintage clothing. They had a 50% off summer sale and I went in and tried on a couple dresses. I found one I liked but there was tear on the sleeve. The manager offered me an additional 10% off but I decided not to get it. All sale items are final sale too, which was a reason I decided not to purchase it. I did buy a state forty eight shirt there, which I LOVE. Hey have a whole section devoted to unisex shirts which I thought was really neat. I saw some nice t-shirts not on sale and wanted to buy one, but unfortunately they were low on Medium sizes. The staff was nice and I like what they have in stock, I just didn't have good luck with sizes this visit. I will definitely come back to check it out in a few months or so! This is a cute store and it certainly was bustling when I visited on a late afternoon weekday. But, I didn't feel that it was that different or unique from what you can find at other boutiques, or even Urban Outfitters. I always go to Frances in my time of my need. The first time, I came to Frances in a panic because I needed a dress to wear to my sister-in-law's wedding. After trying on several dresses, I ended up purchasing a light blue shift dress with a floral pattern. In addition, the owner helped me choose a perfect violet, sky blue, sparkly necklace compliment the neckline. She went above and beyond to calm my nerves and help me look perfect. It was a hit at the reception, and I still get compliments all the time from my co-workers on that necklace! The next time I went to Frances, it was on a quest to find a specific shirt during Christmas-time (every shopper's nightmare!) My best friend and I love hiking and we now live in separate states. I tried to order a local Arizona shirt by Keep It Wild Co. that says "I'd Hike That" but due to the popularity of the shirt, it was sold out by the time I was ready to purchase it. Here came Frances to the rescue! I follow Frances on Instagram and they posted that they had a limited stock of Keep It Wild Co. shirts! I rushed over there to purchase it and, viola! I was able to send my bestie the perfect Christmas present! (Fact: She loved it!) Yes, it smells good. Yes, they carry those cool "Love Phoenix" t-shirts. No, they don't carry anything for you if you are over a large size 6. I myself am a firm size 8 on most days. I wanted to buy a cool orange Free People thermal. Even if it was overpriced and the brand runs small ( like a large is going to be a little tight). The owner said they didn't have a large in back, but that I should check online. Wait---I want to buy it from you! You- the local business owner who supports Phoenix. You- the local business owner who could be out of business soon, you- the local business owner who doesn't carry sizes for smaller that the average size 12 american woman. Their t shirt collection is what drew me in and I purchased a few tees to add to my own collection. Exciting, except I'm not throwing down $45 for a t-shirt that looks like it's been washed 1, 500 times. I'm also not throwing down $150 for a sweater. Sorry. When I think vintage, I often think "affordable." I should have known better - this store being where it is, just a short jog from Biltmore. (Yet another reason I am fed up with Phoenix -- really cool stores that cater to moneybags). Of course, I'm biased after falling in love with Blue 7 in Oklahoma City. But, that's another review. Back to Frances... If you can afford it, this store has some really great gift ideas, including plates and saucers that look more like art than functioning accessories. I saw one I would have immediately snatched up for my friend... if it hadn't cost $80. Am I whining about the price? Yes, I think so. After all, when I walk around 7th Ave and Camelback, I want to see things that a person like I can buy (without immediately having an anxiety attack when the total rings up.) Sure, I know AJ's is across the street and it caters to a certain clientele. I get it. I really do. Uhm, ok. But if I'm throwing down a fistful of Benjamins, I want to know they're going to support local art... and not some chain retail supplier in Oregon. What this store needs is a section that appears to be "on sale." Like a table full of odds and ends, marked "$20 and under." This will catch the eye of many, including myself -- who may, upon reflection, just be a cheap bastard. (Hey, isn't it about marketing?!) So, let's count stars: 1 for it being independently owned - by a woman! 2 for offering unique options to people who can afford to spend their paychecks here. 3 for it trying to be something outside of the norm here in Phoenix. I'm kicking myself a little for taking so long to find Frances! The namesake, Frances is the owners grandmother which I think it an adorable little fact. Many reviewers have commented on the regularly high prices at Frances- I walked out a happy woman with many deals. I purchased one silver peace necklace, a pair of Free People jeans, a locally made skirt, and a listography book for under sixty dollars. I was lucky and must have came at the right time, but that just means that there is a right time- which is often the case with awesomeness. I enjoyed the variety and uniqueness of items available, as well as the shop owner who was kind and helpful. Frances is an awesome local business that I can proudly support. I love Frances. I find the best gifts for Birthdays, Mothers Day, Father's day, and any holiday:celebration. They have a lot of jewelry and do-dads. You'll find stuff you can't find anywhere else. I highly recommend it if you are looking for finishing touches to a gift. It's pricy, but you are supporting local artists and a local business... totally worth it. The only thing that bothers me is that it is in the same area as Dutch brothers. The parking area says "no Dutch Bros Parking", but it is literally filled with Dutch Bros customers and I always have to wait for a space.
