This is a cute hotel in a historic building. This is the right place for an authentic local…read moreexperience with hotel-level accommodations. It's not luxury and doesn't pretend to be but it has many of the amenities and perks that you're familiar with like coffee/tea in the room and housekeeping. There is a bar and restaurant right downstairs which is really nice and convenient. The food was actually the best I had in town. The location is ideal for the Herriot museum and Thirsk attractions. I booked through my tour company and when we arrived here, there was an issue with my reservation (it could not be found). We don't know why or how it happened but they arranged 3 nights stay anyway (I had booked 6 nights). Other than that, the service was friendly and my stay was comfortable so I would happily return.

This establishment is housed in a 200-year old building...expect that the floors slope, stairs are steep and narrow, so watch your step. I spent two nights here. My room was small but adequate...perhaps 120 sq-ft. Furniture shows it age but functional. The bed and blankets were perfect...I have slept well. Heating is through a steam register...very efficient until the hotel turns off the boilers in the evening...my room was an ice box...!!! The bathroom is roomy and comfortable. The fixtures could use some routine maintenance or replacement. The shower failed to work, forcing me to shower...eh, bath/wash in the tub. Now I realize that many people love tubs, and I have enjoyed soaking in a few on occasion myself...but lets face it, they are not efficient for washing. There is a real nice pub downstairs...I enjoyed a pint of the local finest, black sheep. After dinner, enjoy a whiskey night cap. My meals were in the downstairs restaurant...a warm and inviting area, plenty of table seating. Breakfast either is continental (pastry, cereal, etc) or a hot cooked meal (ham/bacon/sausage, fried/scrambled eggs, toast, etc). My morning meals were excellent. At dinner time I suggest a table reservation, and when my meal was close to being ready, the server came and got me in the pub...excellent...!!! Dinner was prepared and plated well...tasty, very enjoyable. I recommend the roasted pork belly...very delightful. This is a very nice hotel, and I would stay here again. My only suggestions for improvement would be consider the need for warmth in the winter and don't turn off the boilers at night...it was early February, this is WINTER and it is COLD...and c'mon, fix the shower. There is WiFi...efficient (strong signal and quick speed) when you are downstairs in the pub, but a very poor signal in the room...whats up with that?

Asked at the bar, and a manager quickly joined us and took us to his office despite the late hour. I explained our situation, and was quickly assigned a room at the top of the stairs. Access to floors and rooms is via a key card. The double room was on the small side, but was a family room, so had an adjoining, smaller room with twin bed, lots of teas, coffees, etc. and a kettle plus some complimentary bottles of water. Room was perfectly adequate and looked out onto the picturesque square in front of the hotel. Shower stall was small, but all the rooms we stayed in in the UK were small with a small shower stall (by US standards). Tasty, hearty, "Full English" fried breakfast with unlimited refills on the tea and coffee (not common in the UK). There were also a good number of lighter breakfast options available. The bar and restaurant areas were welcoming and cosy. Given that this is a former coaching inn from the stage coach days, I can't really fault it for having stairs to the rooms (although another review mentions a elevator). Thirsk is a cute little country town, and I would gladly stay here again if I were in the area. It's also only 400 yards away from the actual James Herriot house and veterinary practice museum from the "All Creatures Great and Small" books and TV series, which is kitted out inside as it would have been in the 1930s. Well worth a visit if you're a fan.

Despite being a 'chain' pub, The Three Tuns manages to capture a 'down the local' kind of feel, rather than the soulless atmosphere some of these pubs usually have. In addition to the pub, there are hotel rooms above, however, we only ventured as far as the bar tonight (the rooms do look rather lovely on their web-site!). Tasteful decor, cosy with quirky little caves, hidey holes and candlelit tables. The drink was a great price (£12 for a tasty bottle of Marlborough Sauvingnon Blanc!) and the food that was passing us by looked fairly wholesome and tasty. It wasn't too crowded given it was a Saturday night (and a Yorkshire St Patricks Day!), and the crowd was a mix of couples, groups of young and old and strange older men showing me photos of their vintage cars (I was trying to be polite and kept missing my opportunity to get served at the bar!) We had a nice night here, and I'd definitely make a return visit when I'm next around these parts! Incidentally, we got chips from the local chippy on the way home and found...another Irishman...that was where he was hiding all along!
