For baby-boomers growing up in Seattle, KJR was our religion, our home, and our source of escape…read morefrom our irrational parents. KJR brought us The Beatles, Roy Orbison, Martha and the Vandellas ("Dancing in the Street," "Heat Wave"), The Ventures (Walk Don't Run '64"), Little Stevie Wonder (real name, Stevland Morris), The Orlons ("Don't Hang Up"), The Drifters ("Up On The Roof"), The Rolling Stones, The Tokens ("Lion Sleeps Tonight"), The Coasters, Johnny Horton ("Battle of New Orleans"), and so many more. Every week, KJR provided listeners with a folded paper sheet with a printed list of the top 40. My favorite disc jockey was Lan Roberts. Lan Roberts provided comedic skits and gags, and he gave listeners the opportunity to get a free, "Little Green Thing With a Picture of a Duck On It." I ordered one, and I sewed it on my jacket. The attached photograph shows me wearing my jacket with the "Little Green Thing With a Picture of a Duck On It." If you look closely, you can see the duck printed in black ink. My family moved from New Haven, Connecticut to Seattle in 1960. Just for the sake of argument, what if we had moved to Oklahoma, or New Hampshire, or Maine? Actually, my dad had a job offer to work at Bar Harbor, Maine. What if we had moved to one of those places, and had not moved to Seattle? What if? What if? What if? If we had moved to one of those places, I would not have been able to listen to KJR, and I would have just been an empty shell without a soul.
