Fox Connaught is a standard bar located near the Moxy Excel arena in London. As far as bars go, this one is about as average as you can get. Nothing special or over the top about the food, service or vibe, just standard drinks and average food for a decent time. I had an order of wings which were soggy and seemed/tasted reheated. Also had an order of fries which were fine. The crowd seemed to be more of the business/after work crowd, as well as attendees from conference being held at the arena. It was a Tuesday evening there was a decent amount of people, but not packed, which lead to fairly fast service. The liquor selection was also average. Nothing special in terms of special cocktails or overall spirit selection. Basically this bar is one of convenience if you happen to be in the area. Aside from that, I would definitely venture elsewhere when in London and looking to have a drink and some small bites.

Part of a small chain of east end pub/restaurants, Fox@Connaught was just what I wanted. I cold beer, a warm dinner and a bit of "scenery" to take in while I ate and drank. I enjoyed a draft beer while waiting for my burger and fries, then a second one to wash it down. The burger was decent and the chips were hot and crunchy. It's located in the Docklands area and at lunchtime, I imagine it gets a decent crowd of local officeworkers. The same seems to happen in the evening, plus the patrons of the local hotels that might want something different. Good parking. Plenty of seats inside (unless the place is roped off for a private party), there are also tables outside with umbrella cover. Smoking is allowed out there. Free wi-fi worked well. No complaints about anything else, other than the TV's in the place were tuned into an annoying PowerPoint slideshow advertising the Fox chain of four or five pubs in the area. If I was in this neighborhood, I'd absolutely be here regularly.

Nice place, quick servce. The prices are reasonable. Very close to Hilton Doubletree. Basically the only decent pub in the area.

Great location and awesome beer selection. The patio is da bom too. It's my go to place when at this end of London. Can't wait to be back.

Fantastic food (I ordered the steak & ale pot pie) however the staff working behind the bar were rude and ignored the patrons.

Nice beer selection on draft and decent food including breakfast. Note that they don't serve alcohol until noon.

The staff could be a little friendlier, it would benefit from some craft beers and the place needs a bit of TLC. It's a stunning building with some really wonderful features. The room at the back, which the toilets are off, has a really gorgeous glass ceiling, and there's some lovely stained glass around. This is one of the main West Ham United supporters pubs so definitely one to stay away from on match day (unless you're a West Ham supporter!). With West Ham moving to the Olympic Stadium next season, it will be interesting to see what happens to The Boleyn. It is offering membership which includes transport to the new stadium so perhaps it'll still be a football pub but I hope it means it will be given some attention so that is a good local for us folk nearby. They have started doing a monthly quiz and they also have a karaoke night every so often, so it seems they are trying to make it a pub for more than just football fans. I hope within the next year, this will be a great place to go out with friends. I'd also love it to start doing some good food too. Perhaps we'll have to watch this space.

We went for a Sunday roast and it coincided with when they had a live jazz band playing. It's quite shabby chic, but really quite big. There's a room out the back which is more of a dining room but we stayed in the front bit as that's where the music was. It was busy but we got a table and people came and went so there was normally space for those arriving. The roast dinner was the best I've probably ever had out, certainly in London and at £12 each it wasn't bad at all. There was so much meat (we both had the lamb) and it was so tender and juicy. It had the largest, tastiest homemade Yorkshire pudding I've ever seen, crispy goose fat roast potatoes and perfectly cooked parsnip, carrots and cabbage. It had really delicious gravy too. The drinks were cheap and the jazz band were brilliant. When they weren't playing, there was a guy in the corner with decks playing LPs. There have been some comments on here from other reviewers about the toilets. The ladies were really clean and nicely decorated so may have been refurbished recently. My boyfriend went to the men's and said they weren't the best but not that bad so they may have had some work recently too. This pub is really handy for Forest Gate station and also Wanstead. We had a lovely walk around Wanstead Flats before going to the pub so there's lots to do if you travel to the area. We'll definitely be visiting a lot more.

There is always a good range of beers, typically including Adnams and Doom. There is a long bar counter in the main lounge, service is friendly and fast. The pub is not dominated by music, though there will be some playing unless there is a big sporting event on. The quiet bar has a smaller counter. Quiet is a relative term, there's usually a good friendly hubbub. Food is served at mealtimes, check the website before you go if you intend on eating there. Portions and flavours are robust. Menu choices are not extensive, there will be pies, omelettes and sandwiches on the menu at reasonable prices. It's great to get a square meal now that so many pubs have gone gastro. The pub is probably one of the oldest buildings in Plaistow, thought the frontage is only a century or two old, and the windows are far more recent. Stand back across the street and you can see what looks like a medieval roof line. There is a beer garden at the back, and at the front there is a seafood stall in the car park.

But even with the bar set low, the Black Lion was a very pleasant and welcome surprise. Who would have expected an historic, CAMRA-award-winning Tudor pub, complete with thick-hewn timbers, ambered-glass windows and excellent beers on draught? Not this traveller. The handles carried Doom Bar, John Courage, and two guest beers, all of which were fresh and well-poured. There are three mid-size TV screens (only one was on, and the sound was very low), and this is a pub that welcomes the sporting type, but it is neither loud nor yobbish. The crowd at this Free House is almost exclusively locals, ranging from fringe-hipsters to racing fans. You are not going to get smiles and high-fives, but everyone doesn't stop and stare when an "outsider" walks in either, thankfully. Service was a mixed bag--one friendly bartender and one aloof blonde girl who negligently smoked a vapourizer and looked as if she wouldn't cross the street to piss in your mouth if your teeth were on fire (i.e. not very friendly). The lass had sass, though, and what are the stubbornly non-trendy areas of NE London about if not a bit of attitude? Plaistow is no place the weak of heart or slow of wit, after all. If you want some doofus with a perma-grin that stops dead at the eyes, go to a Kensington Starbucks (or, better yet, just leave London).
