As I have said in previous yelps, Southport's local music scene these days leaves quite a lot to be desired, and I would lay the blame at least partly at the door of local venues. However, pubs such as The Herald and the Fox and Goose on Cable Street are doing their best to keep it alive.
Hidden away off busy Nevill Street, the Fox and Goose looks quite dingy from the outside and once you enter it does have a bit of an 'old man' pub feel about it. However, this all adds to its charm as the pub offers a friendly and relaxed atmosphere in which customers can drink a very decent pint at pretty cheap prices.
They regularly have bands on and host battle of the bands competitions, giving local talent a change to showcase their ability whilst pitting their wits against one another. This has led to the pub gaining somewhat of a reputation for being a 'rock' pub and this, combined with their friendly and attentive bar staff, results in the Fox and Goose being a decent place to go for a pint or to watch a band play, although I prefer The Herald if I had to choose between the two. read more
