The Tour begins with a visit to the Four Peaks Mining store at Arizona Boardwalk. The store manager, Susan, coordinates the tours. Our flight from Falcon Field was a smooth ride with unforgettable scenic views of the area. Tour guide John gave us an entertaining and informative experience. We learned about the geology which formed the amethyst mine. He described the mining operation from stone collection through shipping the stones for jeweler evaluation, then jewelry design. The mining was dusty fun. We left with some amethyst stones that we dug out and enjoyed the return flight. read more

I'm sure if you are looking to buy stones or jewelry this may be a good store. Pricey but I'm sure it's because this is a touristy spot. My review is based on our experience for the mini mine and the geode rocks. I was visiting with my 6yr old rock loving son. I was looking for panning options and I kept seeing this place recommended for its mini mine and geode rock. We get there and see the mine. Walk in and not really sure about it. It's really dark except this nice glow from a salt rock plugged in. Saw some clipboards on the wall. At this point the only worker there hasn't acknowledged us at all. So I go to the counter and ask her if we can go in the mine?, is there something we need to do?, what are the clipboards?; any kind of interaction. She said we can just go in and the clipboards are for a scavenger hunt. Okay cool, go back in, the wall says 1 board per family, okay, grab a board and proceed in. It's dark in there and can't really see so we grab our phone lights. There are different rocks/crystals on the wall. The "scavenger hunt" was the rocks on the wall; and they were all on the one spot we were standing. Just turn around in a circle and you're done. So we exit and see the geode rocks. My son grabs a few; because at $8 each why not. We take them to the counter and the woman starts to put them in little bags. I told her we wanted to open them there for the experience. (Side note... I had called the day prior to see if we open there or at home. I was told can do it in store.) She said she can only help us with one rock since she's in the store alone. Okay sure. So I ask my son which rock. He said the biggest. She then tells us the we need to get the lightest because heaviest may not open. So he picked a small more flat one. She insisted we do the rock she was holding. Okay, fine. Let's just use it. She takes us out the store door and guides us to this bench with a metal plate and gives my son glasses and a hammer. He hits the rock and nothing. It hurt his hands because the metal just vibrated. So I try and the rock just flops around and after 3 hits from me, a piece chips off the rock but don't open. She said see they may not open. So we just leave. Now that we are back home we will try again with our own tools. This was such a scam advertising on their website. The "Experience" they explain is not at all an experience but a waste of time and money. Find somewhere else for this. I would say go here only if you want to buy expensive jewelry. read more

Four Peaks Mining - A Hidden Gem at the AZ Boardwalk! We originally came to the AZ Boardwalk for the UFO Experience, but stumbled upon Four Peaks Mining--and we're so glad we did! This place is truly a *hidden gem* (yes, pun fully intended). The sign advertising a free mine experience caught our eye, so we wandered in... and wow, were we impressed! The mine walkthrough was fascinating--real gemstone and mineral samples with info tags showing what they are and where they came from. It was both educational and visually beautiful. My 9-year-old nephew was completely captivated, and honestly, so were the adults! The shop itself is a treasure trove (literally). They have a huge selection of gorgeous, reasonably priced jewelry, polished stones, raw minerals, fossils, t-shirts, mining-themed gifts, and even whole geodes you can buy and crack open. That part was a huge hit with our whole group! We ended up making several purchases, including a beautiful selenite necklace for my mother-in-law and a handful of carefully selected rocks for my nephew's growing collection. He had the best time picking through the polished stones, and the two ladies working there were absolute gems themselves--friendly, knowledgeable, and incredibly helpful. They even took the time to show him how to find the perfect rocks and gave us great tips for selecting geodes. If we'd had more time, I definitely would've browsed longer, but no worries--I'll absolutely be back, especially for holiday gift shopping. We visited the store and found out they do mining tours on the 4 peaks mountain where they have the amethyst mine. You take off from a helicopter and go up the mountain. At base camp they have a cabin set up. You walk up the side to the mine and you get to take anything you are able to get. We came home with a few lbs a piece of amethyst. It's really beautiful. Very good experience. The tour folks were so friendly. 10/10 experience read more

This is the BEST helicopter mining tour ever!! John our guide was awesome, very knowledgeable, knows so much about the area and the mine we went to. He explained everything about the mine and how to mine for amethyst. He actually helped us mine for the gems. Anything we find we can keep. John (another John) the helicopter pilot was exceptional. Very accommodating, he even helped us in and out of the helicopter, and up and down the trail to the mine. He also helped us in the mine. On our way back he flew over the mountains and the dams. Told us some history about the dams and the river. He also told us about the wild horses we were looking for. This not only exceeded our expectations but was well worth the money. My son adores this store. We make it a point to come and let him pick out something special for his birth month every year. He's an aspiring geologist and dabbles in his love for paleontology. One birthday the employees were so overjoyed with how enthusiastic he was that they gave him a little plush toy to celebrate his birthday. It really made his experience so wonderful. When we went yesterday it was a slightly different experience, but I know and understand that people are human, and not all employees are going to be really enthusiastic about children being in a store with expensive rocks and minerals. My eight year old daughter was excited about the tree of hanging gem stone necklaces and ran her little hand through it admiring them. Kids don't always think about worst case scenarios and the employee ran over in a panic like she had knocked it all down. Not one necklace fell, and as soon as I heard the employee make a big deal over it, I came over and apologized sincerely. I asked if anything broke and she said "No, they're just all tangled up." She stood there adjusting them for a few seconds and walked away. I checked it out and there was nothing tangled, so it couldn't have really warranted the reaction and sad/ embarrassed feeling she gave my daughter. We still spent nearly $100 there and it's not like we weren't serious buyers. This won't deter us from returning, but every parent knows how quickly children can cause an accident and if she had I would have absolutely offered to pay for any damages. It takes two seconds of looking away sometimes. In this case there was no harm no foul. This store is also geared towards kids, being on the boardwalk and having a kid friendly mine experience. I just really hope that the next time we come in we will feel more welcome. read more

I stumbled upon Four Peaks' shop while visiting the Arizona Boardwalk. Having time, we decided to stop in and check it out. The shop is a rockhound's delight. Four Peaks Mining is all things gems, fossils and minerals. Not a rockhound? There is something for everyone at this store. Polished and unpolished gems, jewlery, decor, toys, and educational materials are sold here. While the majority of merchandise comes from outside sources, there is a strong selection of items made with amethyst from their own mine. Four Peaks amethyst are a deeper shade of purple than many others. The woman working there was so incredibly welcoming. She was engaging with my son. She made sure to tell us about their mine, the store, and their scavenger hunt. Mini mine tour. Recreation of the inside of one of their mines shafts may be found inside the store. It is a quick walk through. There is a short geological scavenger hunt for the kids. Scavenger hunt is perfect for elementary school-aged children. Not only did my son find it interesting, but he was glad he got to take home the sheet with information about the gems. While this is their retail store, Four Peaks Mining Co. does conduct public tours of their actual mine. The tour does include a helicopter ride, so it is on the pricey side. This is a large, modern, airy store with lots of interesting displays of gems and minerals. Of course, most of it is for sale But it is not particularly expensive. You could find something you would like at a lower price. This would be a nice place to come with a child of at least five or six years. There are many books for children about geology, gems and minerals of Arizona, etc. It would be a great place to get started with this hobby. read more

Take a mock mine tour and discover what beautiful gems are mined here in Az and elsewhere. My kiddo loved putting on the miners hat with dome light and exploring the dark corners of the cave to discover beautiful pyrite and quartz and so many more gems. Four peaks mines amethysts here in AZ and the owner of the mine designs and displays theie pieces here, which are stunning. There is incredibly beautiful jewelry here, very reasonably priced pieces as well, and kids can get geodes and amethysts or select a bag of their own gems for under $10. My kiddo picked out a geode and smashed it outside. You will also find fossils from various periods and even rare and beautiful chrysanthemum stones. We were there last Friday with our two kids. The young lady in front was welcoming enough but the rest of the staff left a lot to be desired. They offered a lot of cold stares but not much else. My husband and kids were looking at the stones that were $6.99 per bag, the lady (older, heavy set) rudely pointed at the sign to reiterate how much it was, as though we couldn't read. Maybe because we're Asian? I still bought $50 worth of stuff because I do like supporting small businesses and I wanted souvenirs to take back home. I thanked the same lady a few times (she rang us up) but could barely get a smile out of her. Sorry to bother you lady, don't worry, we won't be back. read more

This store was a pleasant surprise. A little hard to find, it's tucked away in a shopping area of some local tourist attractions, the Odysea Aquarium, and the Butterfly House. Look for the purple sign that points to Four Peaks Mining, at the entrance. The workers in the store were very enthusiastic, and friendly. They were happy to talk about the many different fossils, and gemstones on display. The saleswoman was very helpful to me selecting an amethyst ring. She didn't try to push more expensive items, just told me to get whatever ring I liked the best. I appreciated the help, also the fact that the stones are from their local mine. After Fantasia, this is my go-to crystal store. They have gorgeous selections and very fair prices for the level of quality. Staff is always very pleasant and helpful, they recognize me now and always say hi and ask what I've been up to. What's nice is they also leave you alone so you can browse and do your own thing if you like. This place is amazing! First off, the women working in the store today were nothing short of fantastic. They were extremely kind and welcoming with our boys (they weren't afraid of them touching or looking around) and their friendliness and expertise on the gems and minerals made our boys even more excited and interested in what they were seeing. Next, the place is really cool, it is big, bright and open, and a perfect complement to the aquarium. There are really pretty and unique items at all price points, including higher end fine jewelry from the Four Peaks amethyst mine here in AZ, to unique gifts, trinkets, kids' toys and souvenirs, as well as less expensive but pretty jewelry. Last but not least, we got a sneak peek of the kids' mining area - in the future the kids will be able to wear hard hats and explore precious gems embedded in the walls of a "mine." Prices vary from really low (good deals), to beautiful high quality jewelry and collector's/one of a kind pieces. Very cool! There's the mini rock experience which was amazing even for a grown up! I thought it was a brewery by similar name but was pleasantly surprised to learn they have an Amethyst mine at Four Peaks Mountain Range with a lot of stones for sale as well as jewelry.
