For $5 a person parking/admittance, we joined some others at their campsite for the day. The sites were well-maintained, the rocky beach was clean, and it was a joy to spend the day on the cool river. We didn't need floats, but TRL had them available for rent, had we wanted them. Afterward, we visited the shower houses (which were pretty clean), cooked dinner on our grill, and watched the kids play on the playground. Before returning our day passes, we looked around the general store at the t-shirt, river toys, rafts, and more, followed by two scoops of hard ice cream in waffle cones. I would definitely come back, and I wouldn't recommend this campground to anyone looking to enjoy the river. Tech notes: I had Verizon 4G at the general store and at the campsite, but I was roaming at the river. There are two Pokestops near the general store.

Their equipment is always in excellent condition and their service is great. This trip was exceptional because they had just had a terrible storm over night and the owners had been up all night. The resort water was out, their internet was out. They were still awesome. Even though the river was up and a little fast, we had a great day!

I like camping so much, that I flew all the way to Missouri to do it! After meeting up with some…read morefriends who lived near St. Louis, we drove two hours into the Missouri interior (listening to Metallica all the way) and arrived at the Black River for the campground's annual Float Trip. Talk about gettin' your Midwest on! I soon learned that this float trip has been going on for at least 25 years (many of the patrons go every year), and every year, the float trip has a theme. When I went last year, it was a Mardi Gras theme, so everyone was wearing beads and periodically yelling "Woooooooooo!" for no particular reason. The good times were infectious, as I soon found myself yelling "Woooooooooo!" for no particular reason either. There's an old yellow school bus that picks you up at 9am in the morning, you get on and it drops you off at the head of the river, which is very shallow. That was an adventure in and of itself. You know you're partying when the guy sitting next to you pukes on the way to the drop off point. You have your choice of renting canoes, or these big 10-person raft-like things. It takes about 7 hours to float down this slow, shallow river, and all the while people are splashing about or chilling on the shore, hands tighly wrapped around their cans of Budweiser or Busch Light. The campgrounds are very lush and beautiful with many trails in every direction, and they have a stage for live music. One night there was a june bug in my tent, so I went to go sleep in my friend's car (I know I said I like camping, and I DO, but dammit, but this bug was HUGE!). For the first time ever, I saw fire flies swarming around in front of the car, and let me tell you, this city-slickin' broad was absolutely entranced! All I could think was, "Ooooh...pretty!" The friend I visited dubbed me an 'honorary Midwesterner'...and the folks out there loved me! Everyone was very friendly and it was organized (well, as organized as a drunken mardi-gras-themed party camping weekend in Missouri could be). I plan on going again. If you find yourself in MO during the summer, hit this bad boy up, yo.

I showed up after driving two hours around the river to witness a female worker give four different stories to six different people regarding possibility of floating or camping. Campsites for the campers are kind of close together, but the tent lots had tons of room! The entire campground is shaded nicely with beautiful trees. It is clean and well maintained as well. The cabins are decent- clean, and stocked with everything you need. Nothing fancy, but the linens were all clean and the water was hot so no complaints here in that aspect. I didn't deal with the front office as my mother in law booked our stay and did all of that. My only complaint would be the other campers/cabin renters. Our cabin was a duplex and our neighbors were not considerate of how much noise they made. Cabins and camper spots are dog friendly, however it's basic knowledge that your dog must be leashed. Our neighbors did not leash their small poodle, and it rushed my two dogs, one of which was blind, several times. We informed them that because one of our dogs is blind, even though he is a nice dog, he could snap at something coming up on him suddenly. This did not deter them from allowing their dog to continue unleashed. I should have said something to the front office but didn't want to cause any trouble. All in all, a good stay, and not the campgrounds fault about obnoxious neighbors.

There are several great places to visit as a part of this area, but my favorites by far are the Current River and Big Spring on the Current River, and the campground of the same name. I have a wonderful group of friends that introduced me to floating on the Current when I was in college, and ever since this river has held a special place in my heart. We usually camp at Big Spring Campground. There are both electric, non-electric, and RV hookup's. There are real bathrooms, as well as hot showers within walking distance of camp (not porta potties, but it is a campground - so say hello to your local, resident spiders and their webs). We like this camp, because it's right on the river, family friendly, and close to town but far enough out to enjoy nature. While camping a must do experience for all is a walk to Big Spring. It's a natural cold spring, whose source pumps out enough fresh water to fill Busch Stadium in 33 hours! I like to walk there in the early morning or twilight to see the mist roll in. http://www.nps.gov/ozar/planyourvisit/big-spring.htm The nearby town of Van Buren offers: - a nice Lodge for those who want a nice dinner and/or whose idea of camping is air conditioning, nice beds, and tv - the local ice cream spot called The Jolly Cone - the local cafe, The Floatstream Restaurant, for your typical small diner food and a pretty okay breakfast - various small shops to stock up on essentials: beer, sunblock, souvenir tshirts, snacks, replaceable float shoes and swimsuits, intertubes, gas, fishing bait, etc. - and a whole lot of other small town amenities The water is spring fed. So it's super cold and clear - perfect for a hot summer's day! The Current has a pretty decent current, with nice deep water and wading shallows dotted with periodic gravel bars. It's great for intertubing and canoe trips. Various campgrounds and businesses offer rentals and trips with pick up and drop off options (2, 4, 6 hour floats, or even multiple day trips). Check out the area and find YOUR favorite spots and recommendations. It will probably become one of your favorite places on Earth too!
