Parking was limited as you are only assigned one spot, but street parking is plentiful as long as you follow the odd/even rule properly. The apartment itself was lovely. We had a one bedroom corner unit. Beautiful wood floors and lots of windows (they didn't open and close very smoothly, but they did their job! We were lucky to have a lovely view of the lovely historic home just across the street, which had a beautifully maintained yard and often featured cats at play. Utilities weren't costly at all. Heat and hot water was included which meant we only paid for AC/electricity. The building manager, Mike was very friendly and highly responsive with every issue we did have. I couldn't speak more highly of him. We had an issue with a couple of our packages being stolen from the front entrance inside of the secured doors. We brought the problem up to him, and he had cameras installed all around the building about a week later! Though we only stayed in Elgin for a year, we couldn't have been more happy with our little home at 401 E Chicago!

This review should really be broken down into two separate reviews based on my Grandmothers take on…read morethe place and my families since she has passed. I'll start with my grandmother's take. She lived in Chicago until she was in her early seventies, when health concerns forced her to move out to Elgin to be closer to me mother (her daughter and only child). She lived there for almost ten years, of which she called it the best decision she ever made. She as cared for, and met some great friends. Unfortunately she passed away about 5 years ago, but this is not an obituary. My grandmother wasn't a wealthy person, so the only real inheritance she was planning on leaving my mother/ family was this condo to sell when she passed. Which is why she made my mother a cosigner on the mortgage. $150,000.00 investment, she was absolutly going to have a cosigner so she could pass the unit down to her family when she passed.....It has been 5 years since she passed, and that $150,000.00 inheritance is now nearly a $30,000.00 debt on my parents now. While the unit costs $150K, there are monthly dues of around $1000.00 for house cleaning, meals, etc. Those didn't stop when the unit was unoccupied. So my parents were forced to pay $1000.00 a month to a property that was unoccupied. They put it back on the market for cost, but soon dropped their demand to $120K...no response... The challenge of selling these places, and if you take anything from this review have it be this (THE GREENS WILL NOT MARKET YOUR UNIT FOR SALE, THEY WILL ONLY PUSH NEW UNITS WHEN PEOPLE COME TO LOOK). And let's be honest, when looking for an assisted living community, you don't check Remaxx or Craigslist.. You go to the source. Had the people known they could purchase the property for thousands less, the property may have sold. Years went by and there was no action on the property. Thousands of dollars later, the price now stood at $29,900.00. On a $150K home, they were unable to sell for $30K, and the scary thing was, there was another unit for cheaper. My parents eventually hired a lawyer and stopped making payments, they've recently agreed to donate the unit to a local charity, thus removing themselves from the property, but still owing the $30K in monthly dues. They were given one last hope of lessening the burden then the Greens "Board" voted on if the entire amount could be compromised, and they were denied.. My grandmother's $150K inheritance was now a $30K debt. So do I recommend the Greens of Elgin? Yes and no. Do not purchase a new unit.. there are no benefits. Do your homework and find a used one, there are at least 10-20 there right now. And if you buy one, leave it under the occupants name. Regardless of what you paid, you will never see another penny back, and you will be burdened with the $1000.00 a month dues until the unit sells. It's sad to imagine a place that made my grandmother so happy, could financially decapitate her family. Shame on you Greens.. If you really gave a shit about the people who live in your property, you should show a little more compassion when they are gone.

I wouldn't recommend anyone to live here. I am posting this because they had the nerve to remove my…read morereview on the Facebook page. I was one of the first tenants that lived in the Elgin Tower Building. When I first moved in there was a large crack in one of the walls in my apartment and I had asked for it to be fixed before we move in. They simply painted over it (it got bigger as time went on because it wasn't fixed). The bathroom fan never worked and when I asked for it to be fixed they said "That's just how it is" and never fixed it. The management is rude, unprofessional and shady. I have posted a review on Facebook after I had moved out and they replied in a very rude manner and lied to try and make themselves look better. I guess they forgot I had screenshots of their emails they have sent me and the lack of responses they had to my maintenance requests. They also never brought any issues they had with me to my attention and made things up. After I responded, they deleted my comment, their comments and wrote a brand new "nice and professional" comment. That is just so unprofessional. The hallways always smelled like cannabis, there was dog pee on the floors in the lobby for days, the bathrooms in the basement were disgusting, and packages were always being stolen. The cameras they have don't mean anything - they don't try to help you at all. There were times my packages would be stolen, opened up and then thrown back into the package room. No one monitors this package room so it's basically a free for all for whoever wants to come and swipe your package. There were times in the middle of the winter where the callbox wouldn't work or the door wouldn't open. Me and other neighbors of mine would be stuck outside standing in the cold. The counters are not real granite like they advertise, the apartments are awkwardly shaped, there have been many instances of ceilings and windows leaking and it's extremely cold in the winter. No one is ever in office to help and maintenance is off site. They tried to bribe me to stay and move to a 2 bedroom for a cheaper price then when I posted my review they acted like they wouldn't renew my lease because they had issues with me. Okay, then why did you email me begging me to stay and offered me money off my rent? Two months before I even moved out while I was still living there, they made appointments with possible tenants to view my apartment without my consent. They didn't even give me 24 hours. They didn't even tell me they were planning to show it or schedule people to see it! They literally told me a few hours before that they had made appointments with a few people and they were planning to show my apartment! I told them no. That's so unprofessional. I felt pushed out and like my privacy was being violated. No one wants someone to show their apartment they are still living in to random people without them being there and without giving them permission. Don't live here. Save your money and move somewhere wonderful like the Springs in South Elgin.
