The Smugglers Den Inn is a 16th century thatched inn with family, beer garden, childrens play area and ample parking. The beer garden is where we like to crash and relax. While the kids play on the apparatus we chill with a ool drink in the sun and order from the menu full of lovely food and they always have plenty of specials on the board all made using the freshest local ingredients. It is situated in a little village called Trebellan, near Cubert, less than than 15 minutes from Newquay. You approach down a steep, high sided road which is typically Cornish and the pub is right before you and very welcoming. They have regular live entertainment and also have an annual Real Ale and Pie Festival which is is it's 9th year. It's definitely worth pulling off the beaten track and seeking it out for a refreshing treat.

They are very child friendly and provide high chairs, and they are also very very friendly with smiley happy waiting staff who are even patient with my children who change their minds several times before they let them escape! There is also a large car park for ease of parking, small space out the front with chauirs for summer al fresco dining. And for kids they have a slide, monkey bars, zip wire and other bits and pieces of kids play equiptment. The manager that sat down with us to tell us about the history of the building, the impressive vegetarian menu and just the general ambience of the place. We chose to eat here for two reasons: 1 - the menus are written outside on chalkboards near the road. That way you can see what's being served without going in to ask for a menu. This is very good for us because as vegetarians, we've had to leave restaurants before if they don't have veggie options. 2 - it was one of the few places open. Just a friendly tip--don't go on holiday in November. Everything is frickin' shut. A lesson we learned the hard way! Anyhow, the Crumplehorn had it's doors open and we were lucky to have gone in. This place was one of the highlights of our Cornwall holiday. A must if you're visiting Polperro or Looe.

Anyone who complains about lack of elevators and other modern accoutrements miss the point entirely. We loved this place. The employees were all pleasant and seriously helpful. The location is a short walk from downtown but on a quiet corner away from noisy crowds. Our room was comfortable with all expected amenities. The continental breakfast was fabulous with eggs, bacon, ham, and salmon cooked to order. Coffee and tea were piping hot and unlimited. The bartender/hotel manager was a very pleasant fellow named Gary who was more than willing to lend a hand or offer pertinent information or directions with a smile. On Tuesday and Thursday nights local musicians gather and play traditional English folk music. Free! And they are quite good. The bar and lounge are pretty much like they have been for hundreds of years and literally ooze with tradition. Great place to sip a beer or nurse a gin and tonic. Terrific place to stay. So glad we chose them. Great job folks. Now, if we can only figure out the name of that French ship that was captured during the Battle of Trafalgar and lent one of it's beams that now sits overhead at the bar.
