Really nice waterfall! It's certainly nothing fancy but it's something nice to do if you're around the Chattanooga area and are looking for something to do. The hike down to the waterfall is only .4 miles but it's very steep! I didn't have any issues but my parents were definitely taking their time. The waterfall is gorgeous! It was still cold when we went but I hear in the summertime it's a prime place for swimming. They also have restrooms by the parking lot but they were locked when we went, but there were a few port-a-potties outside. They also have a camp ground if you're interested in camping.

I really liked visiting Foster Falls. It was a last minute decision while I was visiting Chattanooga. I decided to head there to visit right before leaving to head back to Nashville. It is a steep but easy trail to manage if you're in moderately good shape. I would not recommend this for someone who has bad knees or back problems. If you're handicapped, you are able to go to the overlook without much issue, but to descend to the bottom really isn't an option for someone who might be physically impaired. The waterfall is absolutely beautiful and this is a supreme spot to go swimming. There were only a handful of people when I visited which I was thankful for since I didn't want to deal with a crowd. Covid-19 is still a thing, and a crowd was not my desire to encounter. I was in luck. The trail is relatively well taken care of. There are some spots that are a bit slick so you have to be careful. Take a walking stick with you or something to help you hold your balance if you think that you are going to struggle going up and down the large inclined hill. What you need to take on this voyage: water shoes, towel, swimsuit, hiking shoes for going down and up the trail, drinks, and if you feel inclined - take food. It is a good place to enjoy and relax. Bathrooms are at the top along with some picnic areas, paved parking, and a RV site. I am not sure if they having camping grounds, but I assume they do. The RV site was next to the main parking lot that you park at before going to the fall. The path going down to the fall is not paved. It is dirt with some wood stairs in place along with a swinging bridge you have to cross. It was safe and stable plus nothing elaborate. The hike is a fourth of a mile down one way. Enjoy the scenery and embrace the view! Cell phone is a bit spotty at the top, but don't expect cell service at all once down at the waterfall itself.

Short hike, but strenuous enough. Beautiful falls. Perfect for swimming! Excellent views from the top or the bottom, but the view from the bottom is a must! Breath taking!

Took an afternoon day trip here while visiting Nashville. The drive wasn't bad, about an hour and thirty minutes or so and is easy to find. The hike down to the falls isn't bad, but it's pretty steep. If you have bad knees they'll be sore by the time you get down. The swimming hole and waterfall are beautiful and it's deep enough to really swim. Pretty rocky getting in, so I'd recommend water shoes. There are some rocks to lounge on, but not many. When we went, it was pretty quiet. For the most part we had the area to ourselves with a few groups just popping in quickly. Because of the rocky shore and steep climb, I don't know if I'd recommend a full day trip here. Carrying a cooler and snacks plus a chair (in case it's crowded and you don't get a rock to sit on) might be tricky. Plus you have to bring everything back up. And it's a steep climb up. Pros: Beautiful, swimmable, easy to find, quiet Cons: Short but steep climb, rocky shore line, no bathrooms at falls, only at the parking lot.

View from the easy to walk to overlook.

Within this area is a 750 natural area named the Walls of Jericho. It's about an hour and forty five minute drive from Nashville. The Walls itself is referred to often as "The Grand Canyon of the South," because when you hike to the Walls of Jericho, you find yourself in a 150 foot wide bowl surrounded by 200 foot tall walls. A traveling minister found it in the late 1880s and named it, and it sat on private property until recently. It was purchased by the Nature Conservancy in 2003, and then sold to Alabama's Forever Wild Program. Alabama spent $9.3million for its portion of the land, and Tennessee spend $5.9million for its portion. The waterfalls form Paint Rock River, and the walls are surrounded by forestry. The forestry itself has at least 15 federally endangered or threatened species. The Walls of Jericho opened officially August 27th, 2004. There is a horseback riding trail, and two openings to the hiking trail- one on the Tennessee side, and one on the Alabama side. Ya'll. This is a hard hike. Even though I hike sporadically, I was not prepared. We drove an hour and forty five minutes from Nashvillle, and arrived. The parking lot had portapotties. There was no cellular service. We began the hike, which is quoted in different places as 6, 7, and 8 miles. There are paper maps in a box at the head of the trail, but they aren't well done or easily readable. As you hike, the path is marked with red marks on trees. However, the hiking trail intersects with the horseback riding trail and forks off to the other states' entrance, and it isn't well marked at all. The hike down into the forest to the canyon took my party about 2 hours, and was super easy as it was literally all downhill, with spots of rugged terrain. The hike back up took us close to 4 hours, and was decidedly difficult. Now, some hikes I've done have been steadily uphill. However, hiking back from the Walls of Jericho was a steep heavy incline for a few feet, followed by a segment of flatland, and it alternated back and forth. Since you're in a valley, the sun sets very early. For us, we began the hike at noon, the sun began to set at 5:15, and we arrived back at the car at 5:45. The scenes surrounding you are beautiful. There are sparse benches, and even an old cemetery. I wish there was more to tell us about the history of the place or the family who'd previously owned it- even on the back of the takeaway maps. Bring water and a backpack of granola. I wouldn't imagine doing this in the dead of summer, so January was perfect, temperature-wise. Go challenge yourself and do this hike.. and prepare to be sore for two days afterward; it's absolutely worth it.

We enjoyed this trail. It's well marked and the end is beautiful. The rocks are very slippery so…read moreI don't recommend this for everyone- it's like walking on ice especially the final section. Definitely a work out and beautiful scenery. Bugs in the face were an annoyance in August.
