This is a short 1.2-mile (there-and-back) trail that offers panoramic ocean views, views of an abandoned Cold War era microwave signal relay tower, and of course, up close and personal views of 20 million year-old fossils. It's distance and special features make it an ideal hike for kids.
This amazing, little-known, trail is located near the popular Topanga Lookout Trail. Both trails share the same initial path, Topanga Tower Mtwy. The trailhead's entrance is located a short distance from where you park off to the right. It's part of the backbone trail system.
Despite the trail's name, I didn't actually expect to see real fossils. I was pleasantly surprised with how many were visible and with how well preserved they are. It's mind boggling to think that this entire area was once sea level and submerged underwater.
Towards the end of the trail you get to see fairly close views of an interesting looking abandoned microwave signal relay tower. The trail eventually links up with the backbone trails system so you can continue on beyond the 0.6 miles if you like. One of the downsides of this trail is that there is a lot of graffiti present. Parking is pretty decent off of Saddle Peak and Stunt Rd. There are no bathrooms. read more
