There was lots to choose from in the menu and I settled for something even the waiter wasn't quite sure what it was. We got a mixed dim sum platter to share for starters which would have been huge for one person to eat. It contained two of the usual dim sums, ribs and one piece of steak. For the main, I ordered a seafood hotpot which came with squid, king prawns and scallops. I have downgraded my rating as the scallops weren't that fresh and the rice didn't taste great. My friend ordered duck in orange sauce with noodles. The atmosphere was great and it seemed busy for a Tuesday night and people seemed relaxed and chilled to the Celine Dion soundtrack. The food is good (few times slightly less so but generally reliable and tasty) and they deliver. The menu had a lot of good options and the price is reasonable. We had chicken in black bean sauce, Cantonese chicken with noodles and egg fried rice. They threw in free prawn crackers which is always nice. Everything was tasty as usual and the food arrived in 30 minutes as they said. All you need from a take away.

So we searched for a local substitution on our Sat Nav (we were desperate and miles from home) and just picked the first one we found, Gonbay. The restaurant has on the street parking and there were a lot of similarly sized restaurants on the same street in Altrincham, all pretty deserted. SO walking up I was a little nervous because the thought of being loan diners in a restaurant terrifies me. But Gonbay was pretty packed on a Monday night and that is because it is a teriffic little chinese restaurant with amazing staff and a really decent menu. The appetizers and dim sum had all the favourites and then some I had never heard of. We had the fillet steak wraps (£5.80) they advertised three but because they knew we were going to share them they brought out four and an extra cutlery/plate setting which was very nice. The steak was soft and wrapped around shredded vegetables, beansprouts etc you know the drill. The sauce was so sweet and salty and the quality of the meat so good I could have stopped there and been satisfied. I was feeling particularly self indulgent (self destructive) so I ordered the Crispy Chilli shredded Beef (8.50) and boiled rice for our main course. Oh my god it was just as crispy chilli beef should be, gnarled old walking sticks of unidentifiable bits of beef, drenched in sugary salty red sauce, surrounded by onions and peppers in a brief nod towards actual nutrition. I ate the whole thing. What followed was a pot of tea so voluminous I couldn't drink it and I really did give it my best shot. Possibly related to this the toilets are very clean. The staff were really friendly and funny too so that fifth star goes to them specifically. The presentation of this meal can vary massively, with the majority of establishments offering "fairly soggy beef" rather than crispy, as it should be. At the New Rainbow, the beef is ever crispy, which is why as Arnie says, "I'll be back" again & again (although not always for the same dish, naturally).
