Pork dumplin

This is the best Chinese restaurant for DimSum, a type of Cantonese Brunch in Manchester. The push a trolley with fresh dimsum in the restaurant until 4pm, which is similar as the practice in southern china & HK. A lot of British Chinese family come here for Sunday lunch. The good thing is that they have a car park with free parking & a big Chinese supermarket downstairs. It is certainly my favourite Dimsum restaurant in town with reasonable price. Four of us ate enough food for 11 pounds each today.

Glamorous doesn't only claim to be Glamorous, (through its name) but also the biggest, best and most outrageously exotic restaurant you'll ever experience. Strange claims. On the approach to Glamorous you're faced with the very grand oriental temple style design from the exterior to lay claim to the claim. The restaurant itself is a very big open planned space, with plenty of round tables and lots of chitter chatter like a typical Chinese restaurant. I've had dim sum and evening dinner here and both have been delicious and frequented regularly by me along with the parents. If you're feeling particularly adventurous the supermarket below, W H Lung, is filled with a lot of ingredients under the sun.

Massively busy on Chinese New Year's Day

Just stopped by for lunch with my Pa for Chinese New Year lunch and the place was already heaving with mainly Chinese families with the same idea. We didn't book but was given a raffle number and we waited for about 15 minutes for a table. The place is normally quite busy on Sundays (family day) or Mondays (Chinese takeaways' rest day). We come here because there's here or Tai Pan to choose from for dim sum, grocery shopping and free parking. The classic dim sum trolley is how dim sum was served up in Hong Kong so for our family, this restaurant offers some nostalgia but the variety and quality of dim sum really is no match. It is good if you know exactly what you want and don't want to wait to eat. However, when the restaurant is so packed and there are only 4 trolleys, each with their own offerings, you still have to wait for them to be wheeled round. It can still be quite intimidating for non-Chinese even though they have a laminated card with English in it but you can order with a waiter if you know exactly what you want. In addition to the classic Prawn Dumplings and Siu Mai, I would recommend the Shanghai Dumplings - bite-size steamed parcels containing pork and a hot juicy meat consommé that is served with black vinegar to cut through the fattiness. The egg tarts is also a favourite but here they are not crispy enough. The Prawn Cheung Fun is also a staple to try - it is a steamed cannelloni that's prawn wrapped in rice pastry sheets but here the texture is not silky enough and is prepared slightly too thick. There are Char Siu (BBQ roast pork) and other meaty variations of this dish on offer here. The service is okay and the restaurant needs updating but the food is great and quite reasonable priced, so it gets 3 stars!

They have anything from salt and pepper wings to bowls to wraps! I love the fact that there are a number of protein options and they have vegan options as well. This is a pretty chill spot where you can go to grab a bite for lunch or for dinner right after work. It's definitely a well liked spot as soon after we arrived it got rather busy. We all chose the bowls, and you can get it with either rice, fries, lettuce, or half/half. I'll tell you it's beyond filling and for a reasonable price too! I got the sticky chicken with half salt & pepper fries and half rice. Other things we ordered were the salt & pepper prawns and the beef. That beef was seasoned just right! On top of that they have a number of different sauces you can add. The sweet and sour sauce took it to another level and was my favorite followed by the garlic herb mayo. We all thoroughly enjoyed it and if you ever find your way in MCR, ‍to Salt & Pepper because you won't be disappointed!

A brief history of Chinatown favourites…read more..... I was introduced to real Chinees food - I mean proper Chinese food, not gwailo-style, westernised stuff - in the late eighties, by my old friend Ronnie Chan. Ronnie and I would go weekly to Win Wah on Portland Street, an astoundingly cheap place where dishes cost £3-4, and I learned very quickly to use chopsticks (out of necessity - otherwise Ronnie would have eaten all the grub before I had any chance). Then Ronnie moved back to Hong Kong, Win Wah disappeared, and I was in the wilderness. After some years of searching, I found a new home at Wong Chu. Cheap, no-nonsense, with high-quality offerings - the noodle dishes, and the duck / pork / squid were always spot-on, I wandered the streets, checked the menus, and tried the other places - but always found myself returning to Wong Chu, because it was cheaper and better than the competition. I dined there hundreds of times. One Saturday morning in 2001, I opened my newspaper and saw the headline "Hacked to Death by Triad Maniacs". It was Mr Wong and his family. I'd seen Mrs Wong go through her two pregnancies, watched her kids scurry excitedly around the place, and I was devastated. But the restaurant re-opened, now managed by Mr Wong's adult daughter from a previous marriage, and continued to deliver great dining..... for another 5 or 6 years. Then it went into a sad decline - I have no idea why - and by the end, it was a pale shadow of its former self. Back to the wilderness. Now I have a new home in Chinatown. As good as Win Wah & Wong Chu at their respective peaks, with the same format - no-frills, low-end prices, but great quality, a relaxed and friendly informal atmosphere, and a menu of Hong Kong-style Chinese dishes that are a world away from the MSG-laden gwailo junk that's so ubiquitous in UK Chinese restaurants, Fu's is the real deal. Welcome home.

A blink and you'll miss it gem. Not named after whoever that damn person Mr T was referring to when…read morehe got annoyed, Fu's is instead a traditional Hong Kong style café with a huge amount of hot, yummy options including your usual szechuans and sweet and sours, chow meins and hoi sins, and they're all lovely enough, but what you want to try here are the more unusual, authentic dishes. My favourite is the fish stew, done hot pot style and just so delicious you'd happily force yourself to eat too. Combos and sauces you might not have encountered before are the order of the day here and the creativity pays dividends. The secret trick here is not to be given the blue menu. They'll automatically pass it on if they think you're English, but it's the red one you want; that's what harbours all the wonderful stuff. The drinks are interesting too, especially the traditional Hong Kong iced tea, it's uber refreshing. And with wicked prices and smart service to boot, this is one gem you should ensure won't stay hidden long. Get stuck in.

Wow! Thats the…read morefirst world that springs to mind, and is by far THE BEST Chinese Restaurant I have been to bar none. When first seeing the outside of the building you are greeted with a oriental themed front, with an overhanding roof and two guard lions outside. Once through the double doors you come across a cozy layout, with roughly 8-10 tables of varying sizes. Not a huge place the layout used to comply with a local public house, however the decor is great with glowing red windows (obviously behind a fake wall) and great decoration throughout. Seating is ample and the ambiance isn't overpowering. Service Is great, the people are helpful and attentive without being too nosy or prying... which on occasion is a fine balance. Drinks were offered as soon as we sat down and menus handed out without a fuss. Food This is sit down buffet style menu though please don't be put off with the word 'buffet'. Your meals are all freshly prepared and served to you as you would a traditional restaurant. For £13.95 per head you get ample choice of starters and main courses. Myself I have tried almost everything on the menu (not in one visit!) and I absolutely love: Crispy Seaweed (Fried cabbage usually) Barbecue Ribs Salt and Chilli Ribs - vegetarian option - the vegetable mix with lettuce wrap. Oh and the soups are great too: The Crab meat and sweetcorn soup is my fav Main courses are all what you would expect with the addition of Thia Cuisine too. Again I loved: Garlic and Chilli King Prawns with Egg Fried Rice ( Prawns are butterflied) In conclusion if your in the area this is a great place to go and well worth a visit! p.s. limited parking at the front, otherwise parking is on the street which can be busy at times.
