It feels somehow weird to be rating a Buddhist Temple, but here I go:…read more This temple is a nice place to quiet the mind and remind yourself of your practice. They have a Sunday morning community service, it starts at 10am and literally at 10am they will just start silent meditation, follow by an interval with chanting and prayer, than you are back into meditation for another 25 minutes. After that there is a dharma talk, final announcements, and you are welcome to join the group for tea and sweets in the downstairs hall. I have been going to the Sunday service for a month. It's been a very good experience. They offer an introduction to meditation class, retreats and membership with more hours for week services and yoga. There is also a cute bookstore by the entrance.

Years back, I had stayed few days at the Zen Buddhist Temple, which was ran by this nice lady monk who had since moved. Because I had a phenomenal and transformative experience, I decided to come back for a second retreat! When I came back, the Temple was ran by a male monk from Korea (could be the same monk now, not sure), and I left there with an uncomfortable and unpleasant time. Reflecting on this, I realized that there were certain assumptions that the male monk failed to inform me, before I checked in. I don't want to go into exact details of what those issues were because I don't want to ruin people's view of the Temple. But, if you have any plans to stay at the Temple overnight, ask what rules and expectations are for guests, especially when it comes to the access and use of the kitchen...

The building in itself is pretty amazing- it used to be the Norwegian Young Men's Association Clubhouse (or something?). There's a yoga studio with requisite props, a 70's style lounge where they serve tea on sundays, replete with a giant mural of a unicorn, and a meditation room where they do events. You don't have to join the cult of Kriya to take a yoga class here, but I've enjoyed attending some workshops and talks as well. The yoga classes themselves are basic old school hatha- no fancy Bikram action here. They have some amazing instructors. I am partial to the Tuesday night restorative class taught by Carol Swann- it is incredibly relaxing and Carol is a wonderful teacher.

The hatha yoga practice focuses on alignment and being present. It has helped me manage years of chronic pain - more so then any doctor, physical therapist or medication. It has helped my mental health as well. I found not only a spiritual practice and amazing teachers, but a loving community. Cannot recommend enough! So excited for the new location to open and spread this joy! Shanti.

Before we got started, Ashley took the time to walk us through some of the things that may happen during the experience and really made us feel comfortable. Once the it began, I felt so relaxed - almost like I was sleeping but I could hear her voice guiding me and bringing e back to the breathing. Overall it was a really relaxing experience, I would recommend it to anyone who is curious about trying pranayama.

We all had limited experience with breath work, mostly through yoga, but were curious to try it as a friend was telling me that it really helped her through some anxiety. Before the class we were sent an email with some basic "what to expect" information and when we arrived Ashley gave us time to ask questions and get settled in. We have done 2 sessions so far and each one was unique - I was actually pretty surprised at how much my body absorbed after just one lesson - things that felt strange quickly became familiar. The entire time Ashley guided us through the breath work, we all felt very safe and calm and once the meditation was done, we didn't feel rushed at all and every person had an opportunity to share. I highly recommend these sessions to anyone who is considering breath work.

Plus, her clinic is as relaxing as a spa: I feel soothed the minute I step inside! Upon separate occasions, Lisa greatly helped me recover quickly from two knee replacement surgeries as well as a hip fracture from a serious fall. Furthermore, her cutting-edge, e-stem acupuncture has been immensely healing, much more effective than dry needling. In fact, my physiotherapist told me I healed very quickly and he always found his clients who use acupuncture heal more quickly. In addition, Lisa provides other organic supplements, holistic therapies as well as topical pain relievers. These have been key for not only for my illness / injury recoveries they have helped me remain healthy as well as feel and look youthful. When Lisa opened Healing Foundations, I had been seeing another acupuncturist for over ten years. After seeing her, Lisa soon became the acupuncturist my I recommend to all my friends. It's a great setting for a range of interests, whether the goal is to have access to more secular meditation help or to practice more directly in a Tibetan Buddhist tradition. The founder and teacher are really intelligent about contextualizing practices and teachings for people who grew up in the west, so there's access to a really rich tradition but always with clear translation. The resident teacher has a phenomenal meditation background and a range of visiting teachers come through to give special programs. There are introductory workshops on a regular basis, and an introduction to the posture and basic meditation practice is always offered at the beginning of any session. I also liked the atmosphere here because I want to contribute financially and help out but am sometimes broke or strapped for time. The feel of the center is really open and there is never any pressure, so I am able to contribute when I can but never feel bad about how much to give or participate, so I can keep up a regular meditation practice throughout.

I tried to get into yoga at least 4 different times in my life, and it just never took- whether it…read morebe the timing of classes, the location of the studio, or most importantly- the way a class left me feeling meh or even blah half the time. I started going to Tula in 2012 and have been a member ever since for so many reasons. First and foremost, I have met some INCREDIBLE teachers at this studio who have taught me so much about alignment (by feel, of course- no mirrors in this studio!), how to listen to my own body and respond accordingly, and how to treat each class as an opportunity to check in - and never a time to simply "push yourself" or "sweat it out". I love how this studio values and seems to honor each teacher's personal approach and personality, allowing you to easily find the instructors who you best jive with. I'd imagine there's someone for everyone here, whether you are looking for someone to make you giggle (Cassi), cry tears of gratitude (Rhiannon), jam out (Kathryn), feel like you somehow also got a bonus mini massage (Veronica), feel super chill and peaceful (Melissa) or get unexpectedly pushed to new limits delivered by the most mellow voice ever (Monica). And those are just some of the folks I've been practicing with for years- everyone has been so lovely and there are many I've yet to even practice with. Other things that need to be mentioned- the fact that everything you need- mat, towels, props, even hairbands!- are all available and free to use. PLUS they store your mats if you prefer. That is so rare and such a courtesy to folks who may be hurrying in from work or whatnot. There's also the yogi citizen program and the efforts to add other holistic experiences to the repertoire, like Solstice Malas, special events (GLOWGA, anyone??) and partnerships with other amazing local businesses like Five Point Holistic Health (who deserve a review from me too, come to think of it...). Tula is why I finally have made a practice of yoga, and I'm so glad to call it my studio!
