A great place to visit if you're in the Ocala area, located inside the Silver Spring State Park…read morewith access from the 58th Avenue park entrance (Campground side of the Park). This little museum is definitely worth a few hours of your time if you're interested in early Florida history. The staff here was very outgoing and quick to answer any questions you may have, the $2.00 admission is a bargain and supports the educational efforts so your park admission and discounts won't apply but it's still such a bargain. I see they post signs daily on the entrance road letting you know the hours, it appears they are not open everyday so I recommend you check before making the drive and paying admission to the park especially if this is your destination and reason for entering the park. It really is a beautiful collection of historic items that tells the story of the park which I found very interesting, it was quite the roadside attraction in its heyday with the springs and glass bottom boats as well as early movie sets - they do have an original glass bottom boat from the 1930's onsite and great examples of dwellings from early Florida across the grounds so the museum itself is just a small part of the total experience...

This was an excellent trip through the history of the north central Florida mainly told from…read morearcheological, geological and historical perspectives. They had tiny flint points to a towering mammoth skeleton and everything in between. And megladons! I was surprised how heavy the cannonball was and how the soft raccoon fur felt. They also have friendly and very knowledgeable volunteers that made the canoe exhibit come to life. Shout out to Sandy for sharing part of her day and let us have even more fun at the museum. Ok, now get the next angle! We wanted a cool place to beat the heat on a Saturday afternoon and we ended up learning, laughing and enjoying each other's company.
