My prescription had changed quite drastically so I wanted to get my new glasses ASAP. I had looked on their website ahead of time and saw that they offer 24hr service on many prescriptions. I walked in and was greeted by a young girl right away. The first thing I did was show her my prescription and ask if they would be qualified for the 24hr service. She said "Oh ya for sure, this is a pretty standard prescription." Great! I then proceeded to spend probably half an hour picking out glasses and trying them on. When I finally narrowed it down to two styles, I was directed to someone else more senior who would be able to measure my head and all of that good stuff. During that process, I again asked when they might be ready. Not until then, 40 minutes later, was I told that they were an odd prescription, would have to be special order and would take at least seven business days. Great, thanks. I'm not disagreeing with this policy or my wacky prescription at all. But I was supremely disappointed that I had spent all of that time there on the premise that I could get my glasses right away. If I would have known that they would take that long anyways, I would have shopped around at a few different stores to look at even more styles. Both of the staff members were friendly, but I would certainly hope and expect that any and all staff working at a store related to something medical would be knowledgeable about what they are selling. If you work at a glasses store, you should be able to read a prescription, no?

I arrived 20 minutes early for my appointment, and they were able to get me in and out before my actual start time. I felt like Dr McKenzie was pretty thorough, although I still felt a little bit rushed and like I didn't have a chance to ask my usual giant pile of question that I have for basically any health care professional that I see. Still, I was pretty satisfied, and I will likely go back here again in a year.

My Appointment was booked for 12:30 for a regular eye test and I was there about 11:30 as I wasn't sure if there was insurance forms etc that take forever to do, and there wasn't. It was well paced and only cost $80.00 which I think is fairly reasonable. I didn't see Dr. McKenzie but I did see Dr. Tsen. The appointment starts with some pretty interesting eye-testing games (I wondered why my previous optometrist didn't do any of this). The receptionist will run you through 3 of these games and they are fairly quick then afterward you wait a whole 2 seconds to see the optometrist and he begins with some preliminary questions then does the regular eye exam. I found Dr. Tsen to be relaxed and comfortable which helps you if you're nervous about an eye test. In the preliminary questions I explained to him that I have poor depth perception that occurred after I had gotten the pair of glasses I was wearing. So he did a test and it turns out I have really poor depth perception lol. I hope it is the glasses due to them not having an anti-reflective coating or perhaps how they made them but that will be something for me to discover in the future. Great place to go :)

The receptionist saw to me as quickly as she could. There were a few people who tried for walk-in appointments, so she had to politely deal with them first. The preliminary tests were all explained to me very clearly, but still done very quickly. When it was finally my turn to meet Dr. Ngo, she introduced herself and warmly welcomed me to the clinic, after apologizing for the wait. Again, each part of the exam was more thoroughly explained than at any other point in my 15+ years of wearing eyeglasses. Upon completion, she reviewed all of my results with me and asked more than once with I had any questions or needed any clarification. At no point did I feel patronized, but wholly reassured by my choice in optometrist. Plus, bonus points for accepting online bookings!

Just the right amount of small talk and smiling, and explained everything I needed to know in a way that I could understand, and even gave me a little bit of extra insight. My last appointment was at 10am and I didn't have to wait. However, I've been there in the past for afternoon appointment and have had to wait a little while. Try for the morning appointments if you can as they open at 9am. They also accept walk-ins. The cost of the eye exam is $90, which is pretty high.

Capilano Eye Centre was once located in Capilano mall next to the food court and just up from…read moreSecond Cup, for those of you who remember when there was an indoor mall! I have been to see Dr. Doz many times over the years, including the bad old mall days, and his genuine friendliness hasn't changed a bit. His availability has, however, as he splits his time between here and the newer, bigger downtown location. This eye clinic is one of 5 associated clinics in Edmonton and area, and some of the optometrists work out of multiple sites. The clinic's "new" digs are much nicer, more open, lots of natural lighting, and with a better selection of frames. I like that the docs have Saturday and evening availability, which makes sense for those of us working rat race hours. The downtown location has a bigger selection of frames and terrible indoor lighting, but good news! You can check out frames there and actually bring them to this location to compare. They gave me literally over $1000 worth of frames in a box and trusted me to transport them to Capilano, wow! Chris the dispenser is our man in Capilano, he'll bend over backwards to help you find frames to suit you, and will research and order alternative versions of frames which interest you. As another reviewer noted, the front end staff leave something to be desired, and I'm afraid that's been an issue for years. Our last visit the receptionists were yakking so loudly (one in that annoying 'omg I know right' valleygirl affectation) that one patron actually went up to the desk to ask them to tone it down. Prior to that there was an older lady who used to complain loudly about her personal issues and who was consistently unprofessional in her attire and demeanour - scrubs with flip flops. Why do you need to wear scrubs to be a receptionist at an eye clinic? I was also unimpressed when my eyewear came in, and they tried to contact me once (from an unidentified number different than that of the clinic) but then never called back. I ended up calling them a week or so later, and did receive an apology that no one had tried to contact me again. Too busy gossiping with each other, undoubtedly. Whoever does the hiring of the front end staff really needs to get their customer service priorities in check. Otherwise it's a great little clinic!

Super Optical was perfect in every way. Competent, quick and reasonably priced. Here's my story:…read more I finally found Super Optical after trying no less than eight other optical stores. Some I abandoned because the prices were about three times higher than what the other stores charged. Others I gave upon because they never had contact lenses in stock, and when they ordered the lenses, it took almost a month for the lenses to show up. Still other optical stores were just too much of a pain - we had to spend hours waiting for someone to help us. The worst case happened just today - the people who worked there were just plain incompetent. I don't want to trust my daughter's eyes to someone that can barely read the prescription I presented. Good thing I made that decision. Super Optical corrected a bad prescription that the first expensive and incompetent optical store had provided. Super Optical staff greeted us in a friendly way, the doctor came out right away and provided my daughter with a very thorough contact lens fitting (only $15). He answered my questions about an astigmatism that the other store had identified, and responded in a way that I found to be intelligent and knowledgeable. He adjusted the error that another optical store had made in the prescription, then sent us home with a trial pair of lenses so that my daughter could see until her lenses came in. He also gave us a complimentary starter kit with solution and a lens case. We got a year's worth of bi-monthly lenses for $195, and my daughter was thrilled with how comfortable the lenses feel. Super Optical is conveniently located and has plenty of parking. I hope this review helps others avoid wasting their time and money on glasses or contacts at other vision care stores. I wish I had started with Super Optical. UPDATE: The contacts we ordered arrived within a week. Still loving this place.
