This park is beautiful and tours you through the history of the Halifax Explosion. The main monument sits atop the hill overlooking the beautiful city of Halifax. There's an awesome natural playground there for the kids and lots of paved walking paths. read more

Atop a hill overlooking the area devastated by the 1917 Halifax Explosion, this park is a peaceful reminder of Canada's worst disaster. The bell tower is the most impressive of many memorials to the tragedy throughout the city. Good signage, landscaping and walkways. read more

Always looking for a new place to walk the dog I decided to take a stroll up to Fort Needham. Always driving by this place and really not knowing any history as to what it represented I am actually embarrassed. I just looked it up in goolge and was very shocked with what I read..... please see below.. This historic tower overlooks the north end of Halifax, the section most devastated by the Halifax Explosion, which took place when the Belgian relief ship Imo collided with the French munitions vessel Mont Blanc on Dec. 6, 1917. The tower pays tribute to the 2,000 who died in the largest man-made explosion ever to be recorded before the A-bomb. During the explosion, 325 acres - almost all of north-end peninsular Halifax - was destroyed. Today, Fort Needham is an active park with a sports field, tennis courts, wading pool and playground. Yeah WOW. What an amazing spot overlooking the Halifax North End in Halifax. If you are out and about check this location out and learn some history about where you live. read more

What a lovely little spot. I've lived in Halifax my whole life and never even knew it existed until I found reviews of it here on Yelp. Then of course I forgot all about it until now. This park is a well-hidden gem in the north end. Quiet, peaceful, chock full o' trees (with swings in them!) and a small playground at one end, Fort Needham is like the city's best-kept secret to me. Of course I had to hit the swing set first. :-) When you don't want to pound the pavement downtown or drive all the way down to Point Pleasant, don't forget this park exists, nestled between quiet, tree-lined residential streets in the north end. Play fetch with your dog, learn a bit of history, sun yourself on the grass ... enjoy some tranquility in the middle of the city. read more

A less tapped spot to enjoy the outdoor splendor, Fort Needham tucks itself into the subtlety of North End Halifax. Its not in my everyday routine, but the grassy scenes and trails make it a fabulous spot to trek or chill. Peaceful, and somewhat of a recluse (at the right hour), this is an alternative to the more obvious sunny-side destinations. Its a spot to enjoy, and relish in obscurity.... while still getting optimum outdoor usage. read more

I recently signed a lease on an apartment in the Hydrostone and, after unpacking a few things one night, took a walk in this park with my boyfriend. This seems like a great, quiet park. It was nice walking through the mostly-empty grounds. Perhaps my favourite part was coming across a swingset and swinging away while a man nearby played the bagpipes and locals walked their incredibly cute dogs. A uniquely Nova Scotian experience, I'd say. There's also a tennis court, where I look forward to embarrassing myself repeatedly. read more

Fort Needham is a great spot to go for a walk or take the pups! It's got the beautiful memorial on the hill, right next to a great baseball diamond. Nothing is fenced here but dogs can be off leash in most areas so, as long as your pups are well trained, it's a great place to run around and throw a ball with them! Great spot, one of our favourites when we lived in this end of the city! read more

I'm pretty spoiled as far as parks go, living just down the road from Shubie Park. So I'm probably not rating this park completely fairly. It's good for what it is. Not as large as I had thought by looking at it on a map. Takes just a few minutes to walk from one end to the other (unless I'm missing something, which is entirely possible). Some green space, an off-leash area, tennis court, small playground, and an area with monuments to commemorate the Halifax Explosion. There was the occasional bench somewhat randomly placed about the park, and maybe a couple picnic tables. I was hoping for a bit more seating as I was there to get some writing done. And with the Hydrostone right there, it seems like there should be more tables for picnic lunches. In fact, had there been more tables, it would have likely become a lunchtime retreat for me as I work not too far away. But all in all, it was a quiet, sunny, green space, and that's all I really wanted today. read more

This is a nice community park with a playground, lots of grassy space for playing frisbee or soccer, a path to walk/jog and the beautiful place-based memorial for the Halifax Explosion. I haven't gone here though since the Irving building was built on the water in the sightline for the memorial. I prefer more forested areas, but this space provides a great green space for community that can be used for all kinds of activities. read more

Away from the hustle and bustle of the downtown scene, this park is tucked away atop a wooded hill in the North End of Halifax. If you haven't been to this grassy sprawl yet, now is the ideal time as the days get longer and the air warmer. There are little paths that take you across the park, ideal for cycling or pushing a pram, and as well enough green space for picnics, games of catch and matches of intense frisbee throwing. There are also tennis courts open to the public! I love Fort Needham as a place to stretch out lazily under a tree on a warm summer's day. A couple of years ago, I attended a CKDU event at this park, with a stage setup and bands playing with BBQ being served - it was fantastic. Check this great green space out while on a North End jaunt; it's fairly quiet and a nice change of scenery from the more central haunts. read more

I took my dogs to Fort Needham to check out the memorial from the Halifax Explosion. The park has a great view of Halifax as it sits on a hill and you can see the boats in the harbor and the big bridges. The park seems pretty quiet in the winter and it's worth noting that the bells in the explosion memorial ring at 6 pm every day. I came here after seeing the exhibits at the Maritime Museum and find that the memorial drives home the impact the explosion had on Halifax. There is street parking on Union St. but not much so be prepared to drive around for parking if it's a nice day. read more

I came here with my daughter as we're always on the look out for new parks to go play in. This is an ok Park. Definitely not as big as it appears when looking at it from Google maps or even from the map they provide at the Park. That being said, the views of the harbour are nice and there is a nice memorial to the Halifax Explosion on site. There are two play areas for kids, one on each end of the park. Neither one is anything out of the ordinary but provides for some distracting moments for the little ones. There are a few tennis courts and there is also a good size off leash field which is great if you have dogs that love to play fetch or just chease each other around. All in all it is a good park but there are other options in the area.. read more

This park is absolutely beautiful. Located in Halifax North, it's both unexpectedly large and well kept. There are some pretty happy trees there worth climbing and the grass is always mowed and soft. There are abundant benches, a small playground and I believe a baseball diamond. Really the park is so big I have not explored it all. I can spend an afternoon there reading and lounging around and rarely see another person. I was dismayed to see the invasive Japanese Knot Weed creeping up, I do hope HRM can keep that from encroaching on the park grounds itself. The Knot Weed issue has become a real problem in the green spaces. The monument in Fort Needham is gorgeous, especially when the bells chime. This is a fantastic park to go for a walk with beautiful views of the harbour. It is home to the memorial for the Halifax Explosion and has a playground and lots of green space. It is also a short walk from the Hydrostone Market so if you want to grab a coffee any lay on the grass it is fantastic for that. Despite being right in the middle of the Hydrostone it is up on a hill and surrounded by trees which gives it a secluded feel. If you live in the area or are just visiting the shops around the park it is worth a visit on a sunny day or a clear evening. I sometimes like going there at night while I am biking through the North End, it is quiet with nice views and a great place to relax and gaze at the stars in the middle of the North End. read more

With the summer weather back and hopefully here to stay, I love that parks are starting to get some yelpy love! Having sort of lived in this neighbourhood for a summer (long story), I really appreciated having Fort Needham just around the corner. From tennis matches on the weekend, to evening picnics, to just taking in the view of the sunset (aren't the first few months of dating grand?), I spent quite a bit of quality time here. While I haven't been back in a while, I'm looking forward to nabbing a bento box from Hamachi or a Julien's croissant and reliving the good ole days up there in the summer. It's well maintained, pretty quiet, and definitely under-the-radar compared to the downtown green spaces. read more

My pooch and I took a visit to Fort Needham over the weekend based on a friends suggestion and I really enjoyed it. Although not comparable to the walking trails of Long Lake or Point Pleasant, it was the perfect location to sit, relax and enjoy the sun. I also personally like the big ball field - I have a lab who has a ball obsession so I can definitely see us coming for another visit to utilize the big space! read more

I grew up in the North End and Fort Needham was a place myself and friends would visit on a regular basis. I remember watching the hole being dug for the Memorial Tower. In the dug up dirt, I found the sole of a shoe and an old medicine bottle. It has a great view of the Bedford Basin where during WWII the supply convoys would gather, almost filling the basin before they departed on the dangerous trip across the Atlantic trying to avoid the German Wolfpacks. You can get a nice view of the ships going up and down the harbour from up there. I use to take my telescope up there and view the night sky. My friends and I did quite a bit of partying up there as well in our teen years. I have so many great memories from the Fort that bring me joy every time I recall one. I grew up in Mulgrave Park and Fort Needham has played a major role in a lot of special memories for me dating all the way back to the early 1960's. I was there when they started digging the hole for the Halifax Explosion Memorial. I remember seeing soles of shoes, broken bottles and other glass, and small scraps of wood from homes blown apart. I went to Richmond School and when it was time to play hooky Ft Needham was the spot to PLAY and hide if need be. There were lots of places to hide up there but the best spots were facing Gottingen St. My family and friends as well as myself use to pick the blueberries on the hill. I miss my old stomping grounds. I am looking for a picture of one of the wooden benches that use to be there at the baseball diamond. The four row heavy suckers. One of them buggers almost killed me and I have over 30 witnesses I know that saw me flopping around like a fish out of water gasping for air. That doesn't include the Paramedics, Police, and all the emergency staff at the Hospital. I NEED A PICTURE OF MY WOULD BE KILLER!!! BEWARE OF THE WOOD! read more
