Fort Maitland Park takes its name from a fort built on this site in the 1830's during the Second Seminole War. What is current day Maitland was once known by the Seminole name of Fumecheliga translating to Musk Mellon Place. In 1838 the U.S. Army established a fort here named after Captain William Seton Maitland who died in a battle with the Seminoles near Tampa and actually never came to this area.
Many people visit this three acre park to launch motorized and non motorized watercraft on to Lake Maitland and to fish. This park has the only municipal boat ramp in the city. Cars can park free and boat trailer parking is free on weekdays and $25 per day on Saturday and Sunday. The parking fee can be paid by scanning a QR code posted at the park while Maitland residents can purchase an annual pass.
The park also has a playground, a picnic pavilion which can be rented, and restrooms. I enjoyed a walk around the park as I took in the scenic view of the lake. Fort Maitland Park offers natural beauty and recreational opportunities. Whether you're interested in a peaceful day by the lake, a family picnic, or a place to take the kids to play, Fort Maitland Park is a delightful place to visit. read more
