A visit with a horned goat

This was a great little park and zoo! Perfect for a quick trip that won't tire out anyone! My grandson had a blast! The area is also small enough that the kids can wander ahead and you can still visualize them at all times- leading to some independence for the children. There is classroom areas available by arrangement to learn about nature.

This Nature Center is right in the middle of a big city park with all the fixin's. There is a big track and football field, baseball field, open space to run around and play catch, plenty of covered picnic tables, and a super fun wooden playground area with plenty of things to climb, explore, and swing on. We parked our car and passed all of these things with our eyes on the prize...animals! Just for some extra fun, somewhere there was a loudspeaker blasting party music throughout the park so we strutted our way to the Nature Center, half moving to the beat, and half embarrassed that we were dancing through a parking lot. Full disclosure, my husband later said he would have preferred a quiet animal experience, so I invite you to weigh all the pros and cons before choosing your own adventure. However, we were not in a remote spot in the woods; we were deep in the city of Kingston and the place was packed. I thought the music was quite fitting. The Nature Center is free to enter and very sweet. Right away you see peacocks to your right and farm animals to your left. Per COVID guidelines, we turned left and began our circle. We showed our toddler goats, llamas, chickens, and even a bull. He may have seen them. Or he may have been so very distracted by all the children around him. What. Are. Children? You know you're a pandemic baby if... After our tour of the animals, we made our way to one of the big fields in the park where some of us practiced walking while others dance-walked to the rhythm of that music. I'll let you guess who did what. So, if you're in the Kingston area with kids, stop by Forsyth Park and Dietz Stadium. Bring a ball for the fields, a hurdle for the track, or just enjoy the playground and Nature Center. So many ways to design your own field trip! The cutest little zoo! Not only is the Forsythe Nature Center a lovely, well-kept little zoo, but it is mindful of the environment. They practice green techniques wherever possible. Most of the electric and mechanical components are powered by solar. There is a QR code audio tour you can access on your phone. They have a "Little Free Library" book recycling location right there in the park, as well as beautifully lanscaped sitting areas to read or just to relax. There's even a geocache located here. The entire place lacks that typical "zoo smell", as the animals and their enclosures are each kept immaculately clean. Although the zoo isn't very big, they do have a nice assortment of lovely, well-cared-for animals, both domestic and exotic, all with accompanying data posted. There are llamas, goats, rams, cows, exotic birds, beautiful peacocks, ducks, a naturalized fish pond, plus a very shy potbellied pig! All the animals can be hand-fed by patrons. (I was feeding a beautiful tan cow that looked like he had just won a blue ribbon) Each animal 'tells' you what he likes to eat via a sign on his/her enclosure, and there are vending machines available for feed in case you've arrived empty-handed. Peaceful, clean, fun, educational, and environmentally sound. All that, and free admission, too! This wonderful little zoo is a must-see.

    You can feed the animals.

It's a very nice little zoo to bring little children to and teach them about animals, it's a nice experience as long as it's not too hot out. It's small so you can take your time walking they and still get done in about 20 minutes. I love the animals there, and I took great pictures.

I think it is a great little place that is close to home for the kids to visit and learn about the animals they have there.

There is a small gravel lot there with the bill perciasepe or green trail head right there, so I took that. It is about a half mile and leads you to the red loop, so if you want to add some distance to the loop, it's a good way to do so. Nicely marked mossy trail, only somewhat challenging on the uphill leading to the red trail. More bugs that I expected for as cool as it was. Bring spray unless you want your face in a bug cloud the whole way. Tons of acorns so watch your footing. White and yellow trails spiked off the main red loop. I suspected these just cut through the loop in case you wanted to get back faster and later I ended up taking the yellow one and that's what it did. So the red loop is mostly easy although there are a few formidable hills, such as Rheinstrom Hill that push it into moderate. I'm not sure what happened at the end of this hike but as I was making my way back around the loop, I lost the trail, no more red blazes. One fork went past some old stone cabins. Another fork went past a house to a road and there was a blue trail there. I ended up having to backtrack and take the yellow trail back to red then to green, so my hike ended up being close to 5 miles. If you like hikes with a payoff, a beautiful outlook or a majestic waterfall, this may be disappointing. There are a few benches and rudimentary bridges but it is mostly a walk through the woods. I didn't even see any birds. Some cool rock formations though. It was very quiet, I didn't see another soul in the 2 hours I was there. There was some weird discarded junk in a few areas, a rusted chair, a toilet even. Mostly though, a nice walk. It was so well marked, I really don't know how I got off trail:)

This spot is wild!…read more We FINALLY took a trip to Action Wildlife today and it was ABSOLUTELY worth the drive. There are multiple spaces to explore when you come in. First, YES you want the big feed pail. Lots of animals. When you first drive in you come upon the museum, gift shop, and play area. They still had their corn pit set up in the play area and that was a big hit with our little one. What you see out in front of you to access is the walking/driving section. You can choose to take this walk or park your car as you visit the animal areas. It goes all the way from the small capybara enclosure to highland cows and so many in between! If you drive straight back you will get to the big green barn near the blue silos. That bar is the petting barn and where you will do encounters. We did the baby highland cow encounter and got to spend a half hour with Hank. Feeding, brushing, petting, and just enjoying his company. We brought in our 1 year old and she loved it! As you leave that barn there is another play area to the left and if you follow it past the camels you'll see the sign for hayride and drive through safari. You can go right down that small road and it'll lead you to a drive around where you're supposed to stay in the car and drive on the enclosure to see a bunch of animals. We didn't do the hayride but it's back there. It loops all the way back, so no worries about figuring out how to get back. We felt that this was BEYOND worth our time and loved all of the up close interactions. Will be returning!
