Take the opportunity to grab 'em while you can. When Aspen gets busy, they get VERY busy, and Eric -- I conjecture -- don't quote me -- would need to turn away clients or ask them to go on a waiting list for the following year. Mr. Eric, Ms. Lindsey, and the rest of their brilliant crew have been working on a multi-year project for me putting in hardscape, including grading and, ultimately, changing (soft-scaping) our two acres from lawn to native plants+wildlife flower garden. Eric and crew are experts on native plants. The more I read about "lawns," the more I cringe every time I pass one on the road. Lawns, being non-native plants, they are animal-torturers -- ironically, lawns passively mow down animals. Think of lawns as efficient animal-disposal machines. Do the planet (and your neighborhood) a favor and make your land friendly to critters by insisting on native plants. Native plants and animals evolved together over millions of years, so when one's land doesn't have native plants, wildlife starves, all the way up and down the food-chain. Lawns are gasoline- and water-guzzlers. The lawn industry uses up a humongous amount of petroleum products merely in lawn-mowing. I am a "Gone the Lawn" person now. Lawns are appropriate ONLY under certain circumstances, like one is a croquet fanatic. I never knew that gardening was year-round. April is the month everyone waits for, but planning starts the previous autumn. Eric's physically-demanding season winds down in mid-November, so let him see your plot before the snows hide the land. Autumn is the best time to start brainstorming the design phase for the following April. Eric and crew are not only landscapers but artists.

This company did some landscaping work for my home a couple of years ago. The work that they did…read morehas been a source of irritation for me ever since. First of all, he did not remove the grass, but mowed it short and then put a protective cloth over the area to be filled with plants and decorative rocks. It did nothing to stop weeds and grass from growing in the entire area. It involves constant weeding to remove the grass that has come through as well as weeds. Secondly, his choice of plants was not based upon the amount of sun received in the area as well as wind. We had to completly replace the evergreens that were planted in October, the following May as they had all died. One would think they would be under warranty. But no-but he generously offered to plant them without additional labor. This trees were very expensive. I contacted the nursery where they were purchased and they informed me that these trees should have been under warranty. I have since had to replace most of the plants he planted in this landscaping project. This was an expensive project and I regrett not doing more background on him. His bid came in lower than the others-but I can now see why. You get what you pay for.

As a semi-serious gardener, I wanted to avoid the cookie-cutter landscape plans so prevalent in my neighborhood. I was looking to add less common herbaceous perennials and woody ornamentals and Steve was able to deliver that for me in spades. The planning meetings were a two way street - my wife and I had had a clear vision for what we wanted in our gardens which Steve incorporated into his plans. Full disclosure: At times, he can be a bit on the stubborn side, kinda like the landscape design equivalent of the Soup Nazi, but in the end, we got a plan with great color, texture and bio-diversity. I also appreciate that Steve is active participant in many of the Madison-area garden clubs and a frequent speaker that the WPT Garden Expo each February.
