This was an absolutely amazing experience! We were a group of 10 on a very wet evening in Kreuzberg. Ann our tour guide is such a professional. She made sure we were kept out of the rain and informed how we would move the tour along the whole way. We started with learning about the local Berlin beer scene and the different varieties of Pilsner. Then entered the amazing beautiful evening market hall. It was a bustling market atmosphere and we got to rub shoulders with locals. Ann gave us some much appreciated time to wonder around the market alone and soak up the atmosphere, while she collected the various tastings from the busy market stalls. We reunited 15 minutes later with a fantastic array of traditional and fusion tastings. Our favourite was the special wine and cheese sandwich (sounds bizarre but it is really special). The handmade tofu was also amazingly delicate. I've never eaten handmade tofu before.
Due to the rain it was unfortunately a bit difficult to soak up the local neighbourhood scene, but Ann did her best to keep us covered and stop under cover along the way to present interesting facts about the are and local neighbourhood knowledge, such the influences of immigration, gentrification and Kreuzberg's unique position and role in the city - really interesting!
We did unfortunately miss one stop on the tour as it was packed and Ann did not want us getting wet in the rain. But we received an email from the manager advising that we could have voucher to the eatery, which I thought was a really nice touch.
We finished off the tour a amazing hidden local Turkish restaurant. As Ann talked about in length, Berlin holds the largest Turkish community outside of Europe. I have never been to Turkey, but have eaten it in the past. This was by far the best experience I have had in terms of tastes and flavours. As soon as you walk into the restaurant, the smells and flavours fill your senses, as we sat between the locals to taste handmade Turkish pizza and Anatolian street-food. But top off the whole food tour experience, we finished with an incredible dessert we had no idea about - we won't spoil this one.
All we can review is - get on this tour when in Berlin!
