We visited Osteria Via Pré after it was suggested to us by our host in Milano as one of the finest…read morerestaurants in the area. Even though we were pretty late (around 10pm when the Osteria is originally scheduled to close) we were kindly greeted and served. The restaurant is situated in a lovely street that branches right off Porta Genova. The street is filled with small restaurants and cafés and was teeming with people at the time. Also, there's the river promenade at Naviglio Grande just a mere couple 100 metres away. Osteria Via Pré itself fits right in there because it is a small, cozy restaurant with only a couple of tables and a bar inside, while most of its chairs and tables are located outside, facing the street. We had a very attentive, nice waiter who conversed with us in Italian, English and German and generally gave us the feeling that he was there for us whenever we wanted something. For appetizers we shared a Foccaccia which was filled with molten cheese. Absolutely delicious though the serving was a little small for two people. In any event, I think it's a positive thing that the appetizer actually left us craving more (food). For the main course both of us ate Lasagne alla Genovese. Frankly, I've never had Lasagne with pesto this green and refreshing. As far as pestos go, this one was absolutely amazing. Rich with herbal aromas, not to oily but just the perfect consistency. The lasagne was housemade and also perfectly al dente. The housewine we had (red one) was to our liking though by no means spectacular. Even after we had finished, the waiter kept an eye on us and our needs, served us a free bottle of water and chatted with us about this and that. In this regard, the mediterranean kind of mentality and atmosphere were really carried across positively. In terms of prices, Osteria Via Pré falls right into the Milano standard. Good restaurants in nice locations like this always demand prices like this in Milano, so I think if you're in Milano and you want to have a good meal, it's not reasonable to skip this one. It's as pricy as most others, offers great food, service and the location is probably more lovely and romantic than most of the crammed city center.

I found out that during the time we went it was called aperitivo in which each of the bars have a buffet of appetizers. Purchasing a drink allows you access to the buffet and I thought it was going to be chips and peanuts but when I walked up they actually had about 20 items ranging from risotto to different types of salad. I've been told this was a larger selection than most places. The food was ok for a bar buffet and the drinks weren't bad. People are pretty rude in line when trying to get food so don't feel bad if you turn around and knock their plate out of their hand :) They're literally right on your back and elbowing you at times. The patio here is always busy and there are always people wanting to drop in. The inside was ok and felt like a bistro but nothing extremely fancy about the place.

Having said that, I noticed a spot that was happening with locals, large selection of appritivo, and fun vibe, so in I walked and thaaaaaank goodness I did!!! For 10 Euro between 6:30pm - 9:45pm, you get a drink - large selection of mixed drinks and some served in large goblets vs. normal glasses too, also fruit smoothies and coke but that'll also cost you the same 10 euro, AND that includes a selection of what seems like 20+ appritivos, from hot entrees (yes, hot and kept that way) like seafood paella, selection of pastas, bites like fries/onion rings, polenta, cold selections like veggies (carrots, zucchinis, spinach, broccoli) salads (cheese, olive/tomato, pasta), sliced meats, potatoes, string beans, and even desserts like caramel flan and chocolate cake! Needless to say, this hungry girl left happy. Very, very happy, and so much so that I returned the following evening, only to find the selection of appritivos even better than the night before. TOTALLY worth it, when in Milan!

That is, if you pass it or don't find parking out front, you'll have to circle the solar system to get back to it. Once there, the place was cool, not too busy, with a touch of accidental hipster separated in 2: the brewery part near the entrance with picnic tables in a courtyard & the dining part inside playing a variety of American oldies & not so oldies. The menu is limited, even the beer list as they seem to only serve their own brews, with some apps & a selection of American wanna-be modern BBQ joint choices. The service was not terrible & they had a handy brochure explaining all their beers which were mostly crossed out because they were out. We ordered 2 different beers one of which was warm & the other just cool but not beer-cold. Beer needs to be served cold, otherwise don't serve it. It's especially unforgivable when it happens at a brewery. I mean, you had 1 job! (Gratuitous complaint: the 2 bearded beertenders we watched served up beer from the taps all night, giving more head than a...well you get it. They never tilted one glass & waited for each completely foam-filled pint to settle before slowly repeating the same mistaken process every time. I mean, 7+inches of head?! Really?! It was insane. see photos) We ordered the pulled pork sandwich which had fantastic slow cooked flavor but was dry & not hot. We also ordered the BBQ chicken. It was more of a tasty rub than sauce & was cold with some parts probably too undercooked to be safe to eat. The house made fries were fresh, hot & delicious. The coleslaw had all the correct dry ingredients with a sweet mystery dressing that was not traditional. I'm still unsure if the departure from real American BBQ cooking was deliberate or a case of mistaken foodentity. Although I feel like they messed up the opportunity to be a reeeally good thing, I'll reluctantly return because the neighborhood doesn't have a lot of other options & at some point in the summer bea I'd like to enjoy an ice-cold brewsky in that courtyard. BYOIce if course.

As my friend had been taken away with the ambulance I wanted to buy dinner for the doctor's table who had spent over 20 minutes looking after my friend while the ambulance was coming. The owner told me rudely that he wouldn't let me because the doctor should not have helped as he (the owner of a restaurant???) was the only person that could help the customers (not that he did, he didn't even call an ambulance, and he ignored us all along). What a sorry excuse for a human being. This after he had refused to serve me anything to drink and eat the whole night because I had gotten to my friends table 15 minutes late, which mortified my friends as they had invited me there. I am sharing this because I think people ought to know about the owner's behavior and choose whether to patronize an establishment run by such an awful person. Appalling.
