True story, a friend of mine visiting from NY ( up state ) was in the area near the garage and noticed a lot of coolant / antifreeze under her truck in the parking lot. She asked some locals and was referred to "Forest Hill Garage" .They inspected the vehicle and told her that it needed a new radiator, they quoted $1200.00 for parts and $1150.00 for labor, plus antifreeze and other related charges and tax totaling about $2500.00. She contacted the parts vendor she usually uses and was given prices of $225.00 for a used radiator or $450.00 for a refurbished one because a new radiator isnt available for a 1987 Land Cruiser. I told her to have it towed to my mechanic in Ashland, drum roll.....ready for the diagnosis? He replaced a heater hose, clamps and refilled the coolant. how much $ was this? $100.00 ! This is not simply padding a bill, this is outright theft. They may as well have taken her wallet out of her bag, really no difference. Where the good old boys went wrong is that they were too ignorant to make a proper evaluation of their victim. First of all shes driving a truck that is over 35 yrs old that she has owned for 25 yrs. Do they think she hasn't had experience in repairs with this vehicle? The truck with manual steering, transmission and stiff clutch pedal is challenging to drive for most people. The truck has a manual choke which these guys didn't even know how to start and had to ask her how to start it but yet they think shes a dumb bell fancy NY woman they can bilk for $ 2400.00. Really? her work boots and motorcycle club bumper sticker weren't a give away? Do they know that NY is not just a big fancy city but its also a huge state with vast expanse of wilderness , mountains, and country people who hunt, farm, chop firewood and.....work on their tractors and trucks. She did over hear them complaining that they couldn't hang a Confederate flag at the shop, maybe it's because she's a Yankee? woman? woman yankee = absurd $$$ price So whether it is because you might get ripped off or because the staff is stupid, maybe seriously consider finding a different repair garage. Of course if they only try to rip off yankee women and are always honest with you, then well maybe you dont care. read more

Came in on a Monday afternoon for a state inspection. I called before I came and they told me they could fit me in. I arrived and they got me right in. The guy in the front of the office (Chris) was AMAZING! All of the men there were nice and friendly but Chris really amazing. We chatted, laughed, and talk about life experiences. I can't say enough nice things about this garage and the folks who work there. I've taken both our cars here for state inspections and other repair work for the past couple of years. They have been fair in their pricing and with actually explaining the work that needs to be done. I've never been charged more than the estimate I was given and I don't leave the place feeling like I've been ripped off as has happened at other garages I used in the past. Heck, one time the owner himself took the time to do a test drive with me to fully understand the problem I was attempting (poorly) to explain. Took my car in Monday, radiator leaking resulting from hitting a deer. Mechanic looked at it and could see the front of the car was pushed in because the radiator cap was partially covered by a section of the car, however, he said I should come in Wednesday for them to repair it, they looked at it and determined I needed to go to a body shop -- I do believe when he first looked at it on Monday he could have referred me immediately to a body shop --- pretty obvious! I took it in on Wed. morning -- it took them only a FEW MINUTES to determine I needed to go to a body shop and I was billed $45.00 ---- good wages for a few minutes. Never again!!! read more

I took a friend's truck in for a tire change, alignment, and inspection, left my mobile # and told them I would be across the street at a restaurant, waiting. Three hours later, I called to check on the status and the young lady told me they were about to start on it. After four hours, having heard nothing, I walked back over to find that they literally had not even looked at the ticket. This is a small operation, with two babies, a couple of mechanics, and an administrative person. How they could have gone for hours without noticing the ticket hanging with the other tickets, I absolutely cannot understand. At first the mechanic said he didn't know where the keys were, but I specifically told the receptionist that I had left the keys in the ignition. Then they chalked it up to "communication error". Four hours with no call, and no service. I certainly won't take my own vehicle there. read more

The best garage in the greater Richmond area. I started going there last year when I moved to Richmond from a recommendation from a few people. I'm glad I did. Anytime my car has a problem I know I can bring it to Forest Hill and get an honest review on what I need. I have an 11 year old car and they never try to sell me on unnecessary repairs. I really can't say enough positive things about the salt of the Earth folks down at Forest Hill Garage. They always show up and show out when I need maintenance or repairs on my car. I feel that I can trust them since they're honest about what's necessary and what's not for my Honda. Their work is timely, too. Whenever I go there, it feels like I'm visiting with good friends 'cuz we just shoot the breeze and hang out while my car is being worked on. It also means a lot to me that they are Veterans- being able to support those who have served our country feels really positive. I'm so grateful for their solid work, kindness, and friendship. i didn't have a garage since i moved here a year ago. I had a flat that needed to be repaired and they are local and so brought it in. Not only did they fix it within ten minutes, there was no charge. I told them I would be back because of such great service. I went in yesterday (without an appointment) and needed an oil change and inspection. I was done within an hour without them finding anything to fix on my 121,000 mile vehicle. Would recommend them highly for professional and expert service. Another place could have found anything to make a buck but they didn't. They really earned my trust. read more

took my car in because my brakes were smoking. They called me back and told me my caliper needed replacing on one rear side, but wanted to replace both calipers, caliper hoses, pads and rotors on both sides. THey then told me I would need to pay $970!!!! Almost $1000! I felt taken advantage of because I cant leave the lot with faulty brakes. I then asked them if the other caliper was bad, they said no, but they usually just do both at once? So I inquired about doing pads, rotors, both sides, and the one caliper and they wanted $750!!!! I dont have that kind of money. I felt it necessary to replace at leas the caliper and hose, and I would figure out something else for the pads (because they informed me the pads were cooked), and they still wanted $400! I said okay and got off the phone, called another mechanic that I know very well, and told me he would be willing to do the caliper, hose, pads, rotors on both sides for $450. I immediately called Forest Hill Garage back (literally 7 mins later) and said please halt work. They told me the car was already apart? Are you kidding me? They said they couldnt even put it back together, but finally conceded that they can, but still made me pay $150 for labor before I could get the car? I felt I had no choice but to pay. Here is the WORST PART. Once my trustworthy mechanic was done, he told me when get took the brakes apart, you'd be able to tell whether any work had been done because the brake dust would be unsettled where the wrench would hit, and he said there is no evidence they even took it apart!!! They literally lied to me! And my friend also told me its two bolts to put the caliper back and doesnt understand why they'd charge me so much to take it off the lift. I feel really taken advantage of and I advise people should stay away from this place. read more
