I stopped by here after visiting the Horta Museum just down the block to pick up some Portugese pasteis de nata. My friend and I got a couple of flavors, include coconut and the regular custard. These were really, really good. I'd forgotten about eating them until I saw an episode of "British Bakeoff" where they made these and when I saw some of the sad looking efforts the competitors came up with, I was immediately transported back to Forcado Pastelaria. If you are jonesing for pasteis de nata, this is your go-to place in Brussels.

Custard tarts

Phenomenal custard tarts with an assortment of flavors from classic, to coffee, chocolate, passion fruit and even yuzu. The pastry crust was heavenly and the custard was creamy and perfect. Coffees were excellent and the service was spot on. The interior was very pleasant and cozy and we will be going back.

Open from Wednesday to Monday at 07h00, the location on Fernand Cocq Square in the heart of Ixelles providing ample foot traffic, Larent grew up in his uncle's Bakery before studying in Paris to perfect everything from Sourdough to Choux and Viennoiserie. Diverse in its offerings, a curated collection of Jams and Spreads mingling with shattering Feuilletines backed by Dark Chocolate, traditional Pancakes are lightly sweet without addition while Liege Waffles see a delicate chew interspersed with Pearl Sugar pockets. Unable to resist a Doughnut, unfilled with just Sugar overlying pillowy Brioche, Renard's Almond Croissant was a touch soggy despite arriving by 08h00, while the Cinnamon Roll was buttery and aromatic without being overly sweet.

They also serve coffee (such as espresso, cappuccino, latte) so you can get a grab and go for anyone on the go. There is no seating area here, but service is super prompt so most people know what they'd like to order once they have someone attend to them. Some standout items I love: baguette savoyard de lardon, oignon, et fromage (savory baguette with bacon, onion, and cheese), morning bun, gaufre (waffle), pain au chocolat et amandes (chocolate and almond croissant), among others! Really, it's tough to go wrong with any of the offerings here and everyone we've brought to try this spot has returned at least once, considering they're only here for 2-3 days! There are days when the line is out the door, but it moves quickly and it's so worth it!

A classically trained French pastry chef, he worked with some of Belgium's biggest names before opening shop in the fashionable Châtelain quarter of Brussels. If passing by, as I did the first time I came across this place, you'll be brought to a standstill when you glance upon the gorgeous creations showcased behind the large old-fashioned bay window. Don't be too surprised, Nicolas Arnaud is a regular at international competition and a master-crafter when it comes to decorating cakes. Inside you'll be greeted by the smell of fresh bakes and friendly advice from staff. It is a small display space but there is a lot to choose from with a continuous to and from the neighboring kitchen. I'd recommend you dig into an éclair au chocolat or other choux pastry. I'm also quite fond of their little biscuits and meringues, perfect for coffee dipping. Prices are of course a little higher than at your local bakery but still very reasonable when you consider what you get. For Christmas this year I ordered my 'Buche de Noel' from here and was happy to pay 33 euros for a 6 person 'Bûche Rubis' containing a light and delicate raspberry mousse, vanilla pannacotta, blackcurrent jelly and almond dacquoise. A fair price for something that looked and tasted as good as this. It was in a league of its own compared to similarly priced Bûche that I tried over the festive period. On a practical note it is also a good address for your own personalized cakes, be it for an anniversary, marriage, or other reception - both private and professional. A must try if you're looking for a special sweet treat.

I especially recommend their Montblanc, tarte au citron and St Honoré. Their "cake du voyage" is also great. Unfortunately the people that serve you are not that friendly. A mere croissant doesn't get you a smile!
