I really like this Food Lion on route 40. The prices , although higher than they used to be like everything else, are still cheaper than the nearby grocery stores. They usually have enough cashiers so you don't have to wait long. In general the cashiers are quite pleasant, especially my new favorite lady but I don't know her name. She's an older black lady with glasses, average height and weight with a GREAT personality. She's so funny I always leave the store laughing out loud. She's very pleasant indeed, a real sweetheart. In the deli if I ask for a half pound (of anything) I usually end up with a bit more than that , between .53 to .58 , which is annoying because I live alone and don't need extra. I wonder if they've been told to do this-slice a bit more than what was asked for since it happens so often. Also I find it hard to open my plastic bag of cheese or lunch meat from the deli because of how they wrap it. It's always a struggle to open the plastic bags from the deli and I can't figure out why. Depending on who's working you may get waited on immediately with quick slicing, or you may get someone who doesn't mind making you wait. Always check your receipt. I've been overcharged numerous times and tonight was no exception, this time for $6.99. Those overcharges add up. They're very nice and polite and will give you back your money but it would be better if everything rang up correctly in the first place. I really like the store. It's clean, it's laid out in a logical manner, it's fairly small for a grocery store which I think is great, and they usually have in stock everything on my list. There's a few annoying hiccups here and there at Food Lion on rte. 40 but overall it's a great place to shop! I just noticed-Yelp had the Pencader Plaza store listed twice and the route 40 store isn't listed at all. read more

I visit the Newark store every week and I always have a great experience. Diane a cashier there always makes me smile and feel good even if my day was hard. She is always very helpful and positive. I wish more people in this world were like her. We defiantly need more Diane's in the world. I suggest you pay her a visit, then you will understand what I mean. read more

I went to the Food Lion at 401 New London Rd in Newark, DE. The cashier asked me if it was oK to put my chicken breasts in a bag with other items at bagging, I said fine. I loaded items from my cart into my car, then unloaded at my home. The chicken breasts and a bag of onions were missing. I called the store and they confirmed that they were there. They said I could come get them, I said they were 20 minutes away (40 minutes round trip) and I could not. I asked for a refund and they said they could not issue them over the phone. They repeated that I could come in and I repeated that I would not be in that area for at least 2 weeks. I said that I was not going to pay for goods that I did not receive due to cashier error (he forgot to put them where I was loading into the cart, e.g. they stayed near him by his side not in the place where he was putting bags I was loading in my cart) and that I would dispute the charges for these goods with my credit card company and also write a poor online review if this was not fixed as I also did not have time to jump through endless hoops for a company caused error. They transferred me to the night manager who basically made me repeat everything again and give me the same apologies except in a more condescending tone. When I related that I did not have time to come by the store, he said "but you had time to come in today' as if I was lying/exaggerating about this limitation. I did NOT appreciate this and told him that I was there today as I had to drive my sick dog to an urgent care vet and the vet said to feed the dog boiled chicken breasts. Your store is not in my regular rotation of places I go. I did NOT appreciate being spoken to in this way as if I was lying in saying I could NOT drop everything and drive nearly an hour and pay for gas to fix something that was NOT MY MISTAKE. I told this individual that I would be including his name in this complaint because that remark crossed a line. It is NOT his or anyone else's place to tell me that I am lying about what I have time for in my day. I have time to type this now because it is ONLINE and that is how business is done nowadays. I do NOT have time to leave my home and my young child (who has a disability) at the drop of a hat because someone else makes an error. My time is NOT disposable and FL's customers NEED to be treated better than this. To whom this may concern, Hello. My name is Diana Coles. About a week ago I called corporate to put a complaint in about one of your managers named Justin who works at the Food Lion in New Castle at the Beaverbrook plaza. I spoke with a lady named Tabitha who guaranteed a phone call back by the next day and it has now been a week. On March 20th, I was doing my weekly grocery shopping at food lion. I live in the apartments right next to the plaza so enjoy walking up there every week and doing all my shopping at all the stores. On this particular day, I noticed employees following me around the store watching me. I payed no mind to it. The manager, who's name I found out later, Justin, had multiple employees come up to me and even had one threaten that I was being watched. I said no problem, I shop here every week, and even showed her my Dollar Tree items with the receipt. My whole shopping experience that day was beyond uncomfortable. To make matters worse, when I am cashing out at the register, Justin (who refused to give me his name) was just staring at me as I was paying for my items. So I asked him, "What are you staring at? You've been harassing me the entire time." And he said "I was making sure you weren't going to steal all those items." I then said, what makes you think that are you serious? I've never seen you before but I am up here every single week." He then proceeded to say "I looked like white trash so he wasn't sure." Never have I been so embarrassed and appalled. I asked his name and he walked off without telling me, once he seen my payment go through. I asked the lady who was cashing me out, ( I believe her name is Melissa ) what his name was. She responded with " I don't know, he is a manager, I think his name is Justin." So, I'm in tears bagging my items up completely embarrassed. I called the store about a week later to make a complaint to the store manager about it. His name is Don. He didn't even have an apology for me or a care in the world. As a manager myself, at Iron Hill Brewery and Restaurant ( 5 years) , this is the most unprofessional management and staff I have ever witnessed. When I make my weekly walks I no longer stop at the food lion, I get everything I need in that plaza and then make the DRIVE to Walkart to finish my shopping as I am uncomfortable even going into my own neighborhood store that I have been shopping at weekly for almost a year now. Justin completely profiled me, and was outright racist towards me with offending words and I will not tolerate it. My favorite grocery store in the Newark area. Nice and clean and easy to navigate. The cashier was very nice too

I love this food lion and cashier Julia is competent, fast and a fresh of breath air.

This place isn't quite rock bottom (that title would go to the Shop Rite just east of here) but I thought it was overpriced and just generally not a great store. The advantages of this store are the friendly employees, the intuitive and reasonably-spaced layout of the store interior, and the fact that the prices on some (only some) items are reasonable. Overall this store is too expensive for me, and the quality of the products is not sufficiently high to justify the prices. The produce section is particularly overpriced...and the stuff isn't anything special. Compared to the Farmer's Market on Kirkwood highway, which has a much bigger selection, the quality is similar but the items here are about twice as expensive, with perhaps an exception for a special item here or there. Compared to ALDI, virtually everything in the store is more expensive and lower-quality. The only reason to come here, in my opinion, is if that they have a few items that you can't get elsewhere...the same reason I'll drop in ACME (a store that is similar to this, perhaps a bit more expensive and with a slightly bigger selection) once a year or slightly less. Oh, and the parking lot...not quite as much of a shit show as the Shop Rite parking lot...but still...who in the world laid this out? Stop sign...turn right, IMMEDIATELY have to stop again. What? Why is there a stop sign IN an intersection? And why is the pedestrian crosswalk right next to the master intersection at the entryway to the whole shopping plaza? Whoever designed this parking lot would do well to either get their shit together, or never design another parking lot in their whole life. I still don't understand how these stores stay in business with competition from places like ALDI and the Farmer's Market. I can't shop here regularly, it just doesn't deliver the quality and value I have come to expect after shopping at my favorite places. read more

They bait customers into the store with attractive sales but then you waste your time going to the store only to find that the sale items are unavailable! So if you're looking for good deals do yourself a favor and go to ShopRite which has more variety, has better prices on average, and who does a MUCH better job of keeping their sale items in stock! read more

I love shopping at this grocery store! However, my last experience was really bad. I walked in with my 6 year old daughter, thru the door that is usually the entrance but I guess today it wasn't. I was greeted by some young angry kid who said stop! You can't come in this way! I thought this was a family store?!? If you really wanted me to go thru the other entrance, (which I saw people doing the opposite because it's not marked outside the door), you wouldn't scream at me and my daughter like a crazy person... At the end of the day, mark your doors accurately and don't scream at me and my daughter like a crazy person, simply because I came in the wrong door..... Oh and I went thru his line Mr. 0227. This store has the worst check out I have ever seen. They only have one check out open and it is frequently several shoppers deep. I've never seen them open another line. Most Food Lions are not so bad. Luckily we have another one three miles away. It's worth it to drive the extra distance. Don't go to this store unless you like waiting in lines. read more

Convenient store for staples, not a large selection but have good sales. However, the cashier that "WOULDN'T" take care of me, today, January 27, 2019, was extremely rude and had a severe lack of common sense! I pushed my cart up to her register, as her lane was EMPTY! I began to put one of my THREE items up on the conveyor belt when the RUDE cashier told me that she had to take the next person in line?!?! (Meaning the lady behind me). I was right there... with only three items and the woman who was IN BACK OF ME had a FULL CART! The RUDE cashier told me that the next cashier over could take care of me?!?! Why didn't the woman with the FULL cart go over there if it were open! Why would this extremely RUDE cashier make me go over there! I'm never going back to this store, (FOOD LION on Chapel Street, in Newark. Right off of Route 4. Next to BJ's.) Whenever this particular Food Lion gets a courteous and capable cashier, they don't seem to stay long. read more
