Still, this is probably the best restaurant I've visited in my life, or at least in the last 10 years. I'm someone who don't like many things. When I go to restaurants, most times, I order the exact same simple menu, consisting of beef, fries, cheese croquettes where available, and Dame Blanche as a desert. The croquette was really tasty but was not too tasty. Then I ordered a simple steak with a pepper sauce. It was really tender, cooked exactly as requested, and it's taste was so good I ate most of it without sauce. It came with French fries which were hand-cut, unlike in almost all restaurants. There was also salad which tasted real good, and I am not a salad amateur. Finally, I ordered a simple dame blanche. The vanilla ice-cream was really something, even better than what you get in most ice-cream places. The chantilly was -- I think -- home-made, but I could be wrong. Nothing to say about the chocolate, but I'm not the best to judge that. All in all, it's not the cheapest restaurant ever, but I really don't regret any cent I paid, and I will go there again. I prefer going seldom to a restaurant where the food gives you a couple hours of pleasure, than wasting money on a cheaper but tasteless experience.

But they do their best to seat as many people as possible. I got in fairly quickly because i was alone. The food was fantastic. I had the Carbonade a la Biere, and it was so great! While the register states No Cards one of the servers told the table next to mine not worry when they didn't have enough euros. Only a drink menu was provided and the dishes being served that day were handwritten on moveable boards or posted on the wall. I had on my list a couple to try but finally went with the Belgian carbonades à la biere which was beef stew with mashed potatoes in a dark gravy made with beer. The plate was quite generous and much appreciated since I devoured it. I enjoyed the creaminess of the potatoes swirled with gravy but the meat could've been a tad bit more tender. Service was good. I think everyone on the floor stopped by my table for one reason or the other. Ambiance was casual and looked like many people were taking their time over their meals. When finished you need head to the register to settle the tab. I paid in cash. Worth a return visit.

Large refrigerated cases faced the street with a variety of fresh fish, shellfish and premade seafood items. In the back the kitchen and food prep were visible and completed restaurant or to go orders were queued at its own counter (though staff would drop off at your table). Prices were quite reasonable comparing them to other restaurants in the more touristy streets. Also the cashier was very friendly with both locals and visitors. My favorite was the razor clams followed by the mussels and fish soup. Each was nicely seasoned and good size/ meaty for the shellfish. A separate bowl was also provided to hold all the empty shells. The WCs were located down a spiral staircase in the rear of the restaurant and was tiny. Overall a great start to my eating in Brussels.

I loved them both, but since I was not sure I would ever get to try the Dutch style in my life-time and despite it being a bucket list food, I was so enormously grateful. Even more grateful because it tasted amazing. I plowed through more than one I must admit. I might never get to try it again so I had to get more than one. Don't judge me. LOL. Anyway, the lady that helped me once I had one of the pickled and one of the cured ones was very patient and very kind. She seemed genuinely interested in what I thought and listened to me as I gushed like a fan boy over their products. I will never forget that and I was very appreciative. The place is pretty close to central, downtown Brussels and it was nice to just go to a table out in a courtyard and enjoy one of the favorite things I had on that trip. It was awesome.

We followed up with the gambas and frites for her, the spaghetti bolognaise for me which is not your traditional Italian pasta but the rough Belgian version that comes with grated cheese (not Parmesan) and a dash of tabasco. The meal was typical Bruxellois and we loved it. If you find yourself in the Anderlecht part of town make the trip to Chalet de la Pede for a great local experience. Staff were very friendly and welcoming as well.
