I am an avid lover of Polish food and have been to Poland several times. I an always looking for…read moreplaces to satisfy my cravings in London and I am soooo happy to report that Sowa is an excellent option. The restaurant itself is located on a side street in Ealing Broadway. It's a large glass-fronted restaurant with a bakery on the other side of a smart glass partition. A light, bright, airy room with comfy chairs and a smart set-up. Onto the food: my greedy friends and greedy self tried ALOT of food last night. The mixed dumplings were good, all fillings tasty and dumpling skin nicely chewy, these weren't pan-fried though which is my preference. Served with onions, sour cream and smoked bacon. Boar dumplings with creamy mushroom sauce was lovely, super-stuffed with boar meat. Mmmmmm. Steak tartare was small but price reflected this, beetroot carpaccio was beautifully presented and so were the herrings, all of these were lovely, good starters. The beetroot soup was excellent. I had the pork tenderloin for mains, oh gosh, it was so soft and tasty, I was so surprised!! Mash was good, needed more sauce though and the salad didn't match the rest of the plate, veg would have been better. My friend's salmon dish was tasty and beautifully presented, just not typically Polish in my opinion. But, I was here for the potato pancakes with mushroom sauce.....90% as good as the Polish cafe in Gdansk which stole my heart. We had 2 desserts which were lovely, tip: walk over to the bakery and pick your cake from the bakery, not just from the menu. Both were lovely. 2 soft drinks, 2 hot drinks and all this food came to £90. Excellent value, service, atmosphere and I loved the food. Afew tweaks would make this place great-cranberries on pierogi, sprouts and salad garnishes didn't work in most cases and they need to re-word the menu as it just didn't do the food justice. And they need to offer their dumplings pan-fried!! Overall a great option, I am so happy I found this place!!

If you're craving pierogies at lunchtime, come here. There are plenty of tables, decent service,…read moreand you can even watch the woman who makes them (behind a glass wall)! You can get a small or a large portion, and they come with caramelized onions on top. Aside from pierogies, the lunch menu is on the smaller side (for someone with food restrictions, anyway). That said, my warm tomato soup was delicious and comforting. (I don't believe it's gluten-free, as there are pieces of something resembling spätzle in it.) They were even nice enough to treat my husband's pierogies and my soup as one (affordable!) 2-course lunch. On the other side of the restaurant is the patisserie, with delicious-looking tarts behind the counter and small tables perfect for an espresso-and-pastry break.

Café Grove is a real treat. It's great, home-cooked, Polish food. Portions are big, and the style…read moreis authentic. Breaded, spiced minced chicken. Perogis. Blini with goulash. Borscht. Cheese fondue. More types of pork than you could want. All with tasty potatoes, sauerkraut and dill. They serve breakfast, too, if you want a cheap fry-up. There are several Polish beers, all manner of spirits, a few wines, and even a cocktail menu on offer. They've got several brands of vodka. It's a small but cozy place. About five tables for two and two tales for four. There's a photo exhibit currently on the walls. Service is very friendly, and they're happy to explain what the Polish dishes are. The food is very cheap for what you get: most main dishes are £8 or less, and you probably won't be able to finish them. Seriously, this is not light eating in any sense of the word. If you need your eastern European meat-and-potatoes fix, you will not get it any better and cheaper than here at Café Grove.

It pains me to write something negative, but boy oh boy, were we disappointed!…read more The fella and I turned up early evening with high hopes and a rumble in the belly eager to share in the delights of this hidden gem of Ealing. Perhaps if my grasp of the Polish language extended further than tak or kielbasa (as taught to me by my Polish friends) could I have salvaged the evening, as it seemed our waitress unfortunately had a comparable grasp of the English language. Ordering our meal was tricky to say the least, but with patience, good humour and the benefit of a descriptive menu, we got there in the end. Then came the wait for food not unexpectedly though, as some rather complimentary online reviews warned that this would be the case, and we ordered a couple of cocktails to while away the time. My Long Island Ice Tea was free poured into a tumbler with only a hint of cola to soften the blow. Now, back in my student years, this would have been a plus point nowadays I prefer my cocktails a little easier on the liver. Then our meal arrived. Eager to sample some proper Polish fare, my fella and I decided to share. The mixed Pierogis with salad and sauerkraut were nice, but certainly not of the proportions alluded to in the reviewsand then the saddest momentOur cheese fondue for two was positively Cheese of GLUE. Heaven knows what went into it all I could taste was a horribly acrid alcohol flavour (some form of vodka?) in a blobby mess clinging resolutely to the sides of a cold bowlFondue's generally work better when kept warm over a flame ours died a slow death some time before making it to the tableand never quite made it into our bellies. The upshot was that we paid for a meal that left us feeling hungry and cheated. The service was uninspired and the atmosphere lacklustre. No amount of artwork on the walls could salvage the experience. Go here if you speak the lingo and miss mom's home-cooking. It's cheap, but then so is my local Polski Sklep.
