JEI performed an assessment and followed up by going through the test in understanding why and assessed the logical processes (logic) the student was using in performing the task mathematical steps they make. In my mind this was the difference for my son. We went back to a tutoring service because my son was in danger of failing middle school math and was in IED (Special Ed). After a few months, he not only caught up but was beginning to accel. The program was so successful for him, he remained in the program for about 1.5 yrs and has had A's in math ever since. His success has carried on into his second year at Jesuit high where his now on the Honor Roll. His experience and work ethic he developed there is a direct result of his achievements in all of his subjects. But must also stress, parental support and keeping the your child accountable. One of the many reasons why I chose this program is because the low student to teacher ratio allows my children to have the guidance and attention they need and deserve. Parents always think my kids are much older than they are because their communication skills are incredible and they have really learned how to self regulate, thanks to the teachers! American River Montessori has a wonderful outdoor space where my kids can learn all about gardening, have the space to run and creative play, work on art projects and have outdoor picnics. They are always creating something new and unique for the kids to enjoy. Oh and they have chickens so my littles love learning about animals and gathering eggs. We were assigned Ms Cortney and she is absolutely AMAZING. He's catching up to where he needs to be and that spark in him and his passion for learning came back. David explained their philosophy & curriculum, and made sure we were a good fit for what they offered- this is not just an after-school free play program. We were invited to sit in on a class, which we did. There is a fully printed & bound curriculum workbook that coincides with the daily lesson plans. They have their own printed posters & supplies (nothing is cheaply thrown together here). The teachers are topnotch bilingual & trained- which I personally appreciated as there are other programs that just think because someone speaks Spanish, that automatically qualifies them to teach. Not so. Most importantly is that my daughter enjoys going to Spanish. I was worried that she'd get burnt out or bored and that it would become pulling teeth to get her to go. NOT EVEN CLOSE! The curriculum is engaging & interesting, her teacher is responsive and encouraging, the class size is small and the children are friendly. We are 4 months in, and my daughter sings in Spanish, teaches ME Spanish words, translates material, talks to others and orders her own food at Mexican restaurants in Español. We recently went on a family trip to Costa Rica and she was interacting the the locals and acting as our interpreter the entire time. The structure in the ST classroom (full immersion, no English spoken) enables the kids to think in Spanish as they learn, rather than translate the English words into the Spanish words in their brains. The teachers are all native speakers which means the kids are learning proper accents and enunciation. The curriculum is tailored to the kids' level and is clearly communicated to the parents at the beginning of the year and throughout the year. There are also several presentations per year where the kids present on various subjects, as well as progress reports given to parents. Overall, a phenomenal program and I would highly recommend it.
