If you trace back through the team's history, they are actually one of the original eight members of the NBA D-League which began play in 2001. At that time, the Charge were known as the Huntsville Flight. To date, the Charge have been based in four different cities: 1. Huntsville, Alabama as the Huntsville Flight (2001-2005) 2. Albuquerque, New Mexico as the Albuquerque Thunderbirds (2005-2010) 3. Rio Rancho, New Mexico as the New Mexico Thunderbirds (2010-2011) 4. Canton, Ohio as the Canton Charge (2011-present) As the Albuquerque Thunderbirds, the team won the 2006 D-League championship (the D-League didn't become the G League until 2017) under head coach Michael Cooper. Cooper, who coached the T-birds from 2005 to 2007, is probably the team's most famous coach. He was a five-time NBA champion with the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1980s. In Canton, the team has done relatively well, qualifying for the playoffs more years than not. The Charge are owned by and a direct affiliate of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Dan Gilbert, who is chairman of both Quicken Loans and the Cavs, is also chairman of the Charge. The Charge are one of 18 teams currently playing in the 2021 NBA G League Bubble at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex near Orlando. If you live in Ohio or have access to regional sports networks through your TV account, you can watch several Charge games this month and next on Fox Sports Ohio: https://canton.gleague.nba.com/news/charge-2021-complete-broadcast-schedule/. It's great exposure for this minor league team. If you live in northeast Ohio, you can also listen to games on 99.7 The Drum (WKTX, Cortland serving Youngstown). Opened in 1951, the Charge play in the Canton Memorial Civic Center, next to the Canton Museum of Art. The Civic Center has a maximum capacity of 5,200, but in the Charge's media guide for 2021, it lists the arena's capacity at just 3,902, making it one of the smaller venues in the league. If you're an NBA fan, some names you might recognize who have played for the Charge include Quinn Cook, Tim Hardaway Jr, Joe Harris, Kendrick Perkins, and Quinton Ross. Eight-year NBA veteran Darvin Ham also coached the team for one season (their lone season as the New Mexico Thunderbirds in 2010-11). Note: This Yelp listing for the Canton Charge already existed (and was claimed too). I didn't have to create it.

The seats are way closer to the field, stadium is more intimate, pricing is way more affordable and the overall fan experience just cannot be beat. I've gone to many major league games where they don't come close to as much fun as the Rubberdm ducks do. The ticket prices are very reasonable, they offer numerous promotions throughout the season, fireworks on weekends and parking us generally very simple. If you go, you have to get the street corn- look for it behind section 119/120. Kids can sign up yo get a pass for autographs before the game- at guest services and passes are limited. Be ready for lots of foul balls too.

One of my favorites things is seeing Akron Children's Hospital overseeing the ball park. I can only imagine how much it brightens a child's day to look out their hospital room window to see the inside of the ball park. There was a 2026 Extreme Foods article written about food at Akron Rubberducks ball park. My family and I decided to try a couple. The pictures here show The Italian Sausage Dugout from the Bier Garten. For $22 you get the Italian Sausage Dugout (sausage, peppers, onions, marinara, and mozzarella cheese) and a souvenior cup with pop. I was excited and looking forward to this all day, but it was a let down. It wasn't hot in the inside and the French bread tasted like it came out of the freezer. A couple of my other family members got the TeriAkron bowl from the Pineapple Under the C and won't be getting it again. It wasn't as flavorful as one would expect. Overall, a great experience watching the Rubberducks win!

For non-hockey peeps, all the NHL (the highest level in American/Canadian hockey) has 2 associated minor league teams the higher league is the AHL. This team is associated with the Columbus Blue Jackets. This means that throughout the year, some players may be sent to this team or taken from this team. I love that Cleveland has a team (kinda wish they were associated with Pittsburgh, but that is ok). I love the mascot (s), the logo, and the overall fun that is associated with this team. The fun part of AHL is there is more of an aspect of community, fun, and family. The prices of the tickets are more affordable (the nosebleeds, which is the middle of the Q are only $10). It is a good way to get to enjoy the Q without the expensive price tag. There are cheerleaders (which I find weird) and sometimes even kids who are honorary cheerleaders. The media team is decent and shows replays (not all AHL teams have that capability). I suspect that much of the team is shared with the Cavaliers. They have fun promo nights with some geared to children. They even have a game you can take your dog to! I feel like this is not utilized enough as the games should be more filled than they are. The team itself ebs and flows. They recently won a championship, but both games I have been to they lost :-(. It is hard to gauge this as the team can be very different if the CBJ has many injuries. The hockey is fast and quality (these are potential NHL players). I only had to take a point because they are part of CBJ.... and I wish the crowd was larger.

Tickets were affordable that night, so we decided to go--and wow, what a night. The moment the game started, I saw a look on his face I had never seen before. Pure excitement. Pure energy. Pure "I-can't-believe-this-is-happening" joy. I may or may not have teared up a little. Honestly, one of the proudest moments of my life. My son has always liked the LA Lakers (partly because his name is tied to them), and now he's determined to see the Lakers play when they're in town this Wednesday. Since we're clearly not basketball people, we had no idea King James plays for the Lakers... and now we totally get why that stadium is going to be an absolute madhouse that night. Our Cavs seats were higher than I've ever sat in a stadium (hello, vertigo), but it didn't matter. Not at all. This wasn't about the view--it was about sharing that incredible experience with my son, soaking in the crowd, the energy, the lights, the noise, the everything. If you ever get the chance to go to a Cavs game, even if you're not a sports fan, do it. Because it's not just a game--it's an experience, a memory, and, in our case, a little slice of magic with my favorite guy.

Either way I squeezed in with close company and cheered on the Cavs. Food and beverage was easy to get to and priced just as you would imagine at a pro venue. They kept the crowd entertained and everyone seemed to enjoy the experience. I will be back for another one and will phone a friend for the best available ticket options. Go Cavs!!!
