After my mom passed away, I needed a quiet getaway before her memorial. My friend and I decided to go to Avila Beach, and we ended up staying at Flying Flags. We had actually discovered the campground the week before while driving up the coast, and we liked the area so much that we came back the following week. Before going, I had read some negative reviews, especially about the bathrooms, so I was a little hesitant. However, we had already booked our stay, so we decided to go--and I am so glad we did. Our experience was simply amazing. The campground was clean, quiet, and relaxing. We each stayed in our own Jupe, and both of them were very clean, comfortable, and nicely set up inside. The bedding was provided, and we already knew towels were not included, so we brought our own. We requested our own fire pit right in front of each Jupe which made the experience feel private, peaceful, and special. The views from our Jupes were beautiful, and the atmosphere was exactly what I needed. During the day, we would go into town to get food, visit stores, or explore the area. We felt comfortable leaving our belongings behind because the campground felt safe and secure. The staff was also friendly, and the whole place had a calm, welcoming feel. One thing I really appreciated was the quiet environment. They have a noise policy, and it made the campground feel peaceful instead of chaotic. It was a wonderful place to relax, clear my mind, and work on things for my mom's memorial while still having space to breathe. The prices were very reasonable, the weather was nice, and the overall experience was better than I expected. It truly felt like a mental and emotional reset during a difficult time. I almost do not want to recommend it because it feels like such a hidden gem, and I would love for it to stay peaceful and uncrowded so I can go back. Highly recommend this friendly, luxury camping venue! The jupe tents were amazing. Quiet, cozy, warm, comfortable and incredible views. You cannot build a fire but they will provide you with a propane "fire pit" for $35 and it runs for quite a while. It is often very windy in this area from 2-5 pm give or take so bring a windbreaker and a hat . We loved watching the otters from our tent in the most comfortable wooden deck chairs. The sea lions were doing their mating calls day and night which was hilarious and added to the fun culture of the place. Pack a sound machine if this would bother you in the night. The staff were very kind and communicated well. We got awesome $5 shirts at the welcome store and the lady working let our toddler use her binoculars to look out at the sea life which really made his day. She was very sweet and deserves a raise! There was bocce ball and cornhole towards the entrance. Very nice and clean bathrooms, center of the campground. A private beach located down the hill. Everything was dog friendly! Free coffee and cocoa at the welcome shop during store open hours. Tons of informative information given to us about the history of the land and its people, upon check in. This was our second time staying at Flying Flags, and it was just as wonderful as the first. The cottages are perfect for a little getaway, with phenomenal ocean views that make it hard to leave. We especially enjoyed sitting on our back porch and having a bonfire while overlooking the ocean -- such a relaxing way to end the day. It's a short walk to the pier where you can get closer to the sea lions or watch the fishermen come in. You can also easily walk or take a short drive into town to enjoy the shops and wineries. We stayed in the jute tents . Though it was a chilly evening we were warm and cozy snuggled beneath their push comforter and crispy white sheets . A solar-juiced power outlet was available for charging our phones etc and lamps were provided as well. We enjoyed the breathtaking "ocean overlook "view at check in , and we were glad we took time to enjoy that view The view was not there in the Morning Time because of fog . We (smugly) threw ourselves a little "arrival reception party "with the refreshments we brought in anticipation of our "GLAMPING " road-trip-pit-stop enjoying the wold class panorama from "our"porch "Cheers ! The plan was always to down to the peir to eat at an excellent restaurant "Merseas" . We have often enjoyed Merseas clam strips and shrimp as we pass through on road trips . We recommend sitting outside at the (heated) patio tables for the most amazing views and wildlife watching. We never fail to spot sea otters harbor seals and sea lions from Avila Pier . Turns out "glamping" is just regular camping but with working plumbing and your dignity intact. You have a choice of parking your RV, renting a cottage or the glamping option with yurt style tents. The beach is walkable, the facilities are spotless, and there's a section of beach for your pooch so bring her. We loved our stay at Flying Flags Avila Beach. The views from every spot we amazing. Each row of spots is another level up, so if you're on the top row, like we were, you'll get a lot of exercise walking around the campground. It is clean and well maintained. Each spot has a propane fire pit. There is a dog park across the street and the Bob Jones trail is not far and is great for waking or biking. It did get windy in the afternoon, but calmed down around 6pm. read more

Had a fabulous peaceful stay at the cutest little cottage overlooking the water with our pup. We absolutely loved the views from our spacious private patio with a fire pit. The cottage itself was cozy but comfortable for two humans and a medium-sized pup. They even had a little welcome basket for him which was so cute. We loved strolling around the property grounds itself and also how convenient it was to walk to the port and the dog beach. It was a little bit of a bummer not to have a kitchen or even a microwave unlike the cottages at their Buellton location but we came prepared and brought a hot plate and dishware and there was still a sizeable mini-fridge to keep all our food. read more

Just like every other camp site, this place has some pros and cons. Overall, I'd recommend this place. Pros: almost every site has an ocean view. Everything is new, clean and organized. The customer service is INCREDIBLE - from the check in, to the gift shop to maintenance crew. Everyone is extremely professional and polite and attentive. This place is walking distance to the local dog beach and some places to eat. Wi-Fi, clean bathrooms & showers available here. Propane fire pits are available for $25 a day with complimentary tank refills. Cons: sites are really close together, so bring earplugs or sleeping pills if you're a light sleeper. Hills are steep to the main bathrooms/showers. So if you struggle with walking up hills, they offer porta potties with no sinks in most areas. No water fountains to fill up water bottles, bring your own water supplies. Dog friendly place, so be prepared to hear barking dogs at times throughout the day/night. The pros definitely outweigh the cons for me. I cannot wait to return here in the near future. read more

What an unbelievably beautiful RV resort! Truly the best place we've ever been to with our RV. (We live in NorCal and outside of California we have only been to Oregon so take this statement with a grain of salt LOL). Scalloped into the hill above the cove, it has fhu along with cable TV (we so appreciate this. Many places don't). Each site has a propane fire pit. We got an "enhanced" view and boy they were not wrong. There are more expensive spots higher up but really no need to spend the extra money. And the RV sites are super far apart. No crowding like in Pismo Beach. This is a quiet lovely spot, however we are here in January and that might explain the solitude. There are also couple cabins and they look lovely too. There is laundry and a tiny market with souvenir clothing and treats and free coffee. There is a large area with Adirondack chairs, propane heaters (at some gathering spots), corn hole, bocce balls and heaters. All with Avila bay views. Short walk to the Harford Pier where you'll find Fat Cats and Mersea along the way. Both restaurants. And don't forget the barking sea lions! Pelicans! Sea gulls! Book now. I suspect this place is gonna be super popular and Flying Flags will be rolling in the money. Totally worth it. We will be back. Thank you! read more

Unmatched views and service. This little gem on the hill will not disappoint. The Tent/car spots are close together and propane only fire pits, although the cleanliness, unobstructed ocean views and complimentary expresso in the morning truly out beats any of the local campgrounds. I would highly recommend staying here. You can walk across the street to Fisherman's beach which is absolutely stunning in the evenings and early morning. The negative: a cold shower - there should be hot water storage so that many people can take hot or at least warm showers. a stated cancellation policy that they don't honor. I had stayed earlier in the year at Flying Flags in Buellton, which I thought was excellent and easily worthy of five stars for both the amenities on the property and around the property. On their recommendation, when I was in the Avila area, I checked out the one The site tent and cabin accommodations are simila, but the facilities are nowhere close, and the accessibility to things to do and around town without having to drive are not at all comparable. The one in Buellton had restaurants, multiple pools to Cousy's live music coffee shop ice cream stands easy access to interesting museum and an ostrich land. I had no problem, abusing myself for almost 2 weeks. Which was longer than my original two day plan. When I was in the area of this one I thought I'd might stay for a few days, but took a look and decided to go elsewhere. They've got the ocean view and it's in good repair, but there really isn't much else . No pools, no restaurant, no hot tub, no gym, no ice cream, no live music. Just a nice place to park or go in a tent near the beach It seemed pretty expensive for what you got. I guess the ocean view is what you're paying for. read more

Stayed here for the first time. Three nights in a tent campsite. The view was spectacular, the amenities were wonderful, and most the staff were friendly and helpful. They have 2 sets of bathroom/showers that are super clean & well maintained. There is a free laundry room, and even a free drink station with coffee, tea, & hot cocoa. The game area is fun as well (corn hole, bocce, yard sized connect 4 & table jenga). The only reason for less than a 5 star review is for the lack of willingness to allow us to upgrade to a bungalow when we were cold on night #2 (we were told the empty ones "hadn't been inspected yet" so they couldn't let us rent them... Other than the high winds of May...we will definitely stay here again! read more

We had a tent, outdoor kitchen and rental Ford explorer in our spot CT5. It's a bit crowded especially if you have neighbors but totally worth it. Plan on going many more times before they higher the prices for tent camping or get rid of it entirely. I don't believe other Flying Flags sites allow tents. The cottages have a Double Bed not a King or Queen so be ready for it to be small. There are no paper towels, plates, silverware or microwave. You have a fridge and espresso maker. The couch is small. The parking for the cottages is really small if you have a truck so plan on parking right across from your cottage. This campground is not setup for kids at all there is not a good area for them to play and ride bikes. The views can be nice as long as the fog hasn't taken over which in this location can be foggy a lot. This spot also gets very windy so be prepared even on the nicest of days this little nook will be foggy and windy. I would highly recommend the accommodations at the Flying Flags in Buellton over this place. If you have kids definitely do the buellton location instead. Or go stay in downtown Avila or Shell Beach. read more

Warning: Tent campers beware! Worst campsite I have ever been to. And we have been state beach camping for over 30 yrs. Pretty sad that Flying Flags is suppose to be a resort. And we couldn't stay a second night. We left without even asking for a refund, we figured why bother they probably don't care. We headed off to Refugio State Beach and scored a site. Amazing blessing and made up for the awful experience we had. Flying Flags offers tent campers two levels of approx 13 sites on each level. The upper level closer to the port-a potties is better but if you haven't been there before they should tell you that. Because you have to call to book a site. #1. They only have port-a potties for restrooms. #2. Gross! The campsites are on top of each other and are really small. No shade, trees, water, to wash dishes or give pet? You can literally hear your neighbors conversation, fart, or kids crying. Then when you have to use the restroom or take a shower, you have to hike straight up hill or a ten minute walk. Forget it if you forget something! Luckily our daughter stayed with us the first night and I drove back and forth up the hill in her car since we have a tent on the rooftop of our car all set up. Lastly the next morning I drove up the hill to shower and was all lathered up with soap. Looked down and somebody numbered two in the shower not sure if they clean the bathrooms everyday. I was traumatized! The biggest question I have for Flying Flags is why have two levels of restrooms for RV campers when they already have those accommodations on the RV? But knowing tent campers don't and offering port-a potties and no showers is just rude. We love tent camping it has brought great joy teaching our kids how to enjoy nature and the outdoors. Now adults they continue our legacy of beautiful memories to pass on to the next generation. This experience was horrible and hopefully Flying Flags will honor tent campers by knocking down the woodshed with port-a potties and build a bathroom. Take a lead like the state beach campsites. read more

Very disappointed to find that our locked in reservation for a very good spot had been changed before we got here. We made the reservation 8 months in advance. Our back window ocean view turned into a view of the Diablo canyon road, which has traffic going in and out 24 hours a day. read more

We are wrapping up about our third visit here since they opened. Every time we come, they've made more progress on their amenities. They've now added a convenience store that also has free coffee. Their shower and bathroom facilities are the best I've seen in any similar camp setting. We loved having free live music on the Saturday leg of our stay. Our favorite aspects of staying here are the panoramic ocean views, the gas fire pits and the stamped concrete patios ---the latter makes for very 'clean' camping (keeping all the dirt and grit you often track into your camper). Is it somewhat costly to stay here? Yes, but I challenge you to get a hotel room with this kind of view for under $500 per night (good luck, at least in California). We will keep coming back, as we feel the price is worth it. read more

What a great location, view and staff. You really can't beat this view. While I'm more of an off grid camper this let's you have an easy to use location as a base with an absolutely gorgeous view. Amenities are top notch and only getting better as they continue to complete the location. Team here is always super friendly with all the details you need to enjoy your stay. WiFi, propane fire pit, full hookups, great little store and live music on the weekends. Great common areas and bathrooms. In case you don't have a trailer don't worry they have dry tent camping close to the bottom or really cool hike in sites towards the top. We stayed in the walk in campsite lot 8 & 9. Towards the end and no one next to lot 9. Beautiful area but I wish they would make it bigger. You're so close to your neighbors. Recommend getting 2 spots so you don't have anyone next to you. Also, you need to haul your gear to the campsite so bring a wagon. Bathrooms are clean, staff are nice and friendly. I would make it a 5 star if campsites were bigger. read more

Would love to give this place better reviews but this is why it's 1 star: Stayed during Memorial Day weekend 2024 1. Terrible and I mean terrible view for this campsite CT-7. If you get that campsite number just go home because your view will be.... TREES! see image below. 2. You have to hike 150 feet to go to the nearest bathroom. If that one is unavailable due to cleaning you have to hike another 100 feet for the other one. 3. Went to the bathroom 3 times and all 3 times both men stalls had no toilet paper. 4. We paid 25 dollars a night for gas tank and fire pit since they don't allow you to bring your own wood and fire.... Fire pit didn't even work with full gas on on both the tank and the fire pit. We texted the maintenance number and no one ever came. See picture below of how weak the fire was. This was a great place and experience! We called day of to see if they had any sites available and they had one Car Tent Site! Which was perfect as we are on a roadtrip. Once we arrived we were greeted by a friendly staff and saw a fun community area with corn hole, horse shoes, fire pits, chairs facing the ocean and more! There is also flushie toilets and showers that do not require a coin to use. In addition there are porta potties closer to the site, but I'd just rather walk and extra 5 minutes to the flushies. Place is a little steep, but very bike friendly. Overall we definitely plan to come back and try out the different sites!!! We checked in Monday Memorial Day and had the best stay! The place is gorgeous and the premium cabins were perfect for my husband dog and I. The views were stunning! The staff was gracious and so friendly. Although the property is a work in progress so far it is truly wonderful, the tent camping, the RV spots, and the whole property is very walkable and nicely kept. I want to layer this review like an Oreo. Good, then bad, finishing with good. First the staff are amazing. They kept us informed, always greeted us and made the stay enjoyable. The grounds were kept immaculate and the spaces were top notch. The best I have camped at. The views were gorgeous (with an exception) and also made the stay one for the books. The fire pits when the natural gas is a fantastic touch. Now, let's move on to the creamy center, the part that I wish I would have said something about and been notified about. We stayed at site #4. The space was nice, the view from the fire pit was not ideal. As you can see in one of the pictures, there is a concrete column blocking your view of the ocean from the fire pit. We were here during Christmas and campsite 5 and 6 were open the entire time. I wish they would have thought about that when assigning a spot to us. I also take some responsibility and should've asked if those spots were open as well. Another miss was being informed that a trash truck comes Monday's at 6:45. We normally get up at that time, but being on vacation, we planned on sleeping in. Unfortunately, that wasn't an option after he stopped by. All in all, for what it's worth, we enjoyed the stay, but disappointed in some areas of detail. We reserved this place again in February to bring the kids. My husband and I stayed at Flying flags Avila beach over the Thanksgiving weekend for 5 days . We usually bring our Motorcoach for a couple weeks stay however this time we stayed in a cottage on the top level with a fabulous view of the bay and surrounding areas. Like every time we have visited this location the staff was extremely nice and the resort was very clean. We highly recommend this resort to anyone looking for a fantastic place to relax and have fun any time of the year rain or shine. Book ahead because they get crowded fast. Great location! Friendly staff very accommodating. Stayed 4 nights and were able to use the fire pits, The Lookout and the complimentary laundry. Enjoyed the view from our site and from the Lookout where we could stay warm and enjoy complimentary hot chocolate. Close enough to ride our bikes to town, fish off the pier or walk on the beach. Loved the welcome text and used it twice while we were there to have questions answered. One was was if they had filled propane response was no but gave me closest location to have our tanks filled. 2.5 stars...Overall, it's a beautiful, well-maintained RV park. Staff is friendly. View is beautiful, but some of the sites have a view that's blocked by tall landscaping. They are dog-friendly but there's rules not to allow pets to do their business outside any of the designated areas or you may be fined. They do have several dog spots but they are far apart. I had my 2 pups with me and 2 of the 3 dog spots we went to were very small and unfenced, and of course dogs must be on leash. I originally booked a car/tent site. If you like a little solitude when camping, this is not the place for you. They practically have you next to each other like parking spots. There was a big gap of about 6 open camp spots yet they booked 3 sites directly next to each other. This was not cool when one of them arrived at 3am and fully set up camp. These sites were also right by a few dry RV sites who ran their loud generators through the night. Bathrooms are far. Only two poorly maintained porta-potties nearby. Luckily, they had a basic cottage available for night two so I took it! Better experience and way less noise. The deck was large and great for the dogs. There was two sets of chairs on the patio along with a fire pit, which I couldn't get to turn even following their directions. The couch was a bit dirty and I did wake up to 3-6 ants at the top of the bed twice through the night. No idea where they came from but I left my camping stuff in my car, had showered, and the dogs stayed in the tv room. Place was well stocked with towels for both humans and dogs. Has fridge but no microwave, and does not stock any utensils/plates. Park definitely seems to cater most to RVers. Don't regret staying here but also won't be back. read more

Where to even start. First off I'll say that the RV sites are nice but way over priced. Can get a nice hotel with a clean bathroom for the same price. My review is mainly for the property and the tent sites. The tent sites are a joke. They say there's an ocean view but they put me in front of some bushes that completely blocked the ocean view. Additionally, the "site" is a parking lot with the border between your spot and your neighbors spot being one single 2x4 plank of wood bolted to the ground. The ground is so hard there is no way to drive in your tent stakes. With the wind coming off the ocean, securing your tent should be top priority. Within the entire tent site, there was one port-a-potty. One!! And no handwashing station. Sooo unsanitary!!. It was filled to the brim every morning. I don't think they clean it out very often. If you want to use a real bathroom you have to climb the steep hill which is not so fun in the middle of the night or early am when you wake up. There is no running water at all at the tent sites so there is no way to wash your dishes. You have to carry them up the steep hill to the bathroom. The tent sites come with a fire ring, but you aren't allowed to have a fire unless you rent a gas pit from them. But it's so windy a fire wouldn't even be enjoyable at the tent sites. The toilet stalls were clean in the bathroom but the shower was constantly filled with hair. At one point I used a ton of paper towels and cleaned the shower floor myself in order to take a shower without getting other people's hair tangled in my flipflops. I'll be honest, state park campsites are better, bigger and cleaner and are way cheaper. Stayed near mammoth with running water and flush toilets for $10 and had a huge plot to camp on. But here it's $35 a night for a plot of gravel next to another plot of gravel- so ridiculous. Fortunately my family was staying at an RV site so I spent most of my time enjoying their site and fire pit and their RV restroom because otherwise it would've been a truly miserable time. read more

Please change policy about inappropriate and offensive flags to be flown at resort. This creates an atmosphere of potential for conflict and tension among guests! I emailed management and did not receive a reply. This tells me that they do not care about guest experience. I love this resort, but do not want conflict when I vacation. read more
