Great eclectic boutique in the funky and fun Mississippi District. Awesome selection of so many different and unique items. Easy to find great things at all price points. We found all sorts of fun things for ourselves and some great gifts for others. Well worth your time to come in a browse. Nice layout with well placed displays. I LOVE Flutter. I go to Mississippi Ave. often and I always make sure to visit this place and say hello to King, resident cat. They sell all kinds of postcards, coffee table books, perfume, gifts, jewelry, and vintage clothing, and more. Probably one of my favorite places in Portland. read more

Kudos on a singular vision extremely well executed. Whether or not I personally want to buy any of the stuff in Flutter is not really the point - the owner(s?) knows exactly what she's going for, and pretty much knocks it out of the park. It's sort of like the best bits of every estate sale you've ever gone to, all (neatly) exploded into a store, with the addition of some new soaps and candles and jazz like that. Overall, I would say the prices are fair - not cheap, but far from gouge city. Very charming and entertaining, and I think you might be able to find something for everyone on your gift list here if you looked hard enough. read more

I adore this fucking place. It is fucking adorable. That is one of the many reasons why I adore it. It is close to my house. I can walk there. When I am on a walk with my dog and pass by, see something kick ass and pretty in the window, they kindly oblige me to walk in with my dog on the leash. Considering she is a hairy motherfucker, that is so awesome. They have beautiful (but overpriced) vintage jewlery, which I have bought and received as gifts. Their changing room makes me want to smoke some hookah. Their selection of perfumes are great--I have easily gotten bored of designer shit, I just want something simple that smells sexy! So I got the one called "Dead Sexy". It's dead sexy. People smell it in the air and know I'm almost there. That's how often I wear that fucking shit. It rocks. Everything is so pretty, I don't even care how cliched this stuff is. I get happy just going in there. The owners also opened up a new store called EDEN on the West Side. I have yet to go there, but have a talented jeweler-friend who sells her wares out of EDEN, so I'm certain it rocks as well. FUCK YES, FLUTTER. Also, I like the birdies. To shop at Flutter is to shop in a magical land full of mischief and intrigue-- a land that pairs paper dolls with parasols and taxidermed animals. The feel is opium den meets a Jean-Pierre Jeunet movie (er ,the guy who directed Amelie!). There's feathers and old fashioned maps and masks and velour sofas and chandeliers and zebra stripe gum. The clothing is exceptionally unique and vintage, from an array of eras, all of high quality. Whoever designed the layout and flow of this store is a mad genius. Everywhere you turn there is a unique treasure to be found--a book on Cuba, a rack of clothes, a silkscreened or embroidered pillow depicting an octopus. I used to live near this store and would visit whenever I was sad or glad, pretty much I visited it a lot. Pretty much I love this place and would move in/marry it if asked. read more

That there is even one iota of complaint about this store ASTONISHES me. The owner has always been there when I was there and she has always been kind and helpful. Anyone who says anything about "overpriced" candles doesn't usually KNOW candles. I buy her Voluspa line and love it. I have bought more than one and I get tons of bang for my buck. If you want a scent that LASTS and lingers.....you buy your candle with her. Or...go ahead and buy a 20 cent votive at Fred Meyers. I'll be honest, I dont totally get the business concept. If I didnt walk past this store every day when I walk my dog, I prolly wouldn't have gone in. It has a bunch of ephemera and cool looking do-dads but Im not really sure what the purpose is. It has some pretty vintage dresses but a limited selection of clothes. I'll make it up to you I promise. The execution and detail at Flutter is undeniable. What I am currently freaking out over is the Frocky Jack Morgan dresses. AMAZING. Yes, they are wedding dresses. One of the best shops I visited in Portland, but as an avid shopper it's top notch for anywhere! I love the design and the decor with it's mix of new and old and vintage combined with modern. The gray cat met me at the door with a grumpy smile and while the finches were covered for the night - what a cool touch! The perfumes, the pillows, and all of the unusual gift items show that the owner really knows how to buy. Prices are a bit high on many items, but the work she puts into this place makes the pricing seem justifiable. This is my favorite boutique in Portland! If you ever wanted to live inside a forest wallpapered with victorian lace then you probably need to check it out. I absolutely love this little shop. It feels kind of like two shops in one. I didn't realize it was also a consignment shop because I stayed in the front of the shop. The back seems to be the consignment part - vintage dresses aren't my get down - so I stayed upfront. It's such a delightful and entertaining store. This place is so well curated, it absorbs me into it's every nook and cranny. I have to remind myself that it is a shop and not just an amazing installation piece. Flutter manages to stick to it's aesthetic while still being unpredictable and brave. The things I have bought here, be it vintage furniture, handmade clothing or gifts have all had that glow that says: "you must take me home, I am magic and you will not regret loving me". This is where I go when I need inspiration, a dose of 1800's majic and to buy something unusual. Flutter is ever changing and always comforting. The merchandising is outstanding. I am a huge fan of the way the clothes are displayed on small racks in color stories. I am drawn to each one and can easily shop them all. The candle selection is also exciting because they sell Voluspa candles and there are so many to choose from. It feels like luxury buying myself an expensive candle that I don't really need. The jewelry makes me drool a bit too. It's unique and fashion foward. You'll also find books, wrapping paper, vintage velvet sofas, stamps and vintage toys. But I guarantee you won't find this place anywhere else. read more

This store was so aesthetically pleasing, I spent quite some time looking at everything and almost purchased several items. However, I found the customer service to be less than perfect so left without buying. I tried to talk to the woman behind the counter twice and was completely ignored and got a somewhat snooty vibe. I work in a boutique and would never ever treat a prospective customer this way. But I can't help but give 3 stars because the stuff in this store and the visual displays were on point. read more

Stopped into Flutter for the first time about a month ago and found a super cool wooden head the size of mine! I've been looking for a head to model my hat collection for 10 years! The shop-keep was super cool and the vibe of the store is great. And their merchandise is amazing. By the way my head is wearing a Turbonegro sailor cap sitting next to a framed photo of Turbonegro lead singer Hank von Helvette that a photographer friend took. Awesome!! read more

Walking into this shop I instantly loved it! They have some amazing 30's and 40's era vintage. I loved going through their sale bins too. There are a lot of great unique gifts that made me think of my mom back home, that I was so excited to find. I wish the reworked stuff was made by local artists (I think it was made overseas?), but it was all still super cute. The cat with a snaggle tooth was adorbs. read more

Usually any place that would describe itself as a "delightful disarray of found objects and clutter" would have me running away screaming. However, small child had just consumed a Hungry Man-sized burrito at Laughing Planet across the street, and while walking down Mississippi, had an URGENT need to use the facilities. We ducked into the first place we saw, and the lovely woman working at Flutter pointed us to the clean employee bathroom without even a teensy bit of stink-eye or attitude. And sure, even if it's not my kind of store, if you allow my kid to foul up your private loo, of COURSE I'm going to browse around and buy something. Wow, the owners certainly had some sort of concept/vision in mind! Something like Miss Havisham's attic crossed with an aviary that ran into a Dia de los Muertos celebration. OR something! It's a very cool and well merchandised store, but did I want to buy any of it? Um...not really. A bowl of wooden hands LOOKS really cool, but who am I gonna buy a wooden hand for? I settled on a bracelet with some creepy Catholic saint images on it for mom, as she might dig it, and we got the heck out of there. But not before they gave small child a free Chinese yo-yo as a parting gift. Flutter, you are such an awesome looking store, and you were so nice to my kid, if only I wanted to buy what you were selling, I'da given you a fifth star. read more

Fun, eclectic, hodgepodge collection of stuff -- from perfume to funky tin toys. It's very, very Portland in the best ways. Some places in the Pearl are way too stuffy, some places on Hawthorne are way too hipster-than-thou. Flutter (and most of the places on Mississippi) gets it just right. Down to earth, funky, welcoming, something for everyone, every age. Loved their selection of Tokyo Milk perfumes, I spent too much! read more

Flutter is fun to walk through, as these reviews say, but I would beware of buying any items because of the store's "all sales are final" policy. Even if what you buy is not of the quality claimed on its label, you cannot return it. (Very ironic given that their web sales are returnable. Hmmm...guess us locals don't count.) I won't be shopping there again. There are many other delightful shops like this one in PDX and they treat their customers with respect. read more
