This mural by Kat Silver, is a vinyl reproduction of her original piece. It is a temporary piece that is a part of the Indianapolis Airport's Art Collection, in conjunction with the Arts Council of Indianapolis.
The piece from a powerful community collaboration called Swish whose goal is to welcome sports fans at the Indy airport and across the city with arts and culture moments.
This mural is located right next to Harry and Izzy's and if you are coming to terminal A and keep walking straight, you will walk right into it. It is a pretty basic mural and without context, is hard to understand. It depicts a couple of houses and a few rabbits being suspended in the air by bright red balloons. Rabbits happen to be Silver's signature figure and appears in most of her works. She says that the animal represents a reminder to "live life fully and not let fears or insecurities hold me back" and intended the piece to tap into the dreamy creative space that exists inside of all of us. It must be the kid in me, but the piece reminds me of the movie up, but less colorful though.
This is not an exact replica of the original. The original has green hilly fields and trees below the floating houses and rabbits. This mural has been adapted to fit the wall and must have not made the cutting block.
Even without much context, I like the piece. But because it is located in the Airport, behind the security check point to make it even more complicated. it is hard to get to and practically impossible to just make a special trip to see. The vast majority of people seeing this sculpture will be ticketed passengers flying in or out of the airport. But if you are flying out of the airport and see it, now you have some idea of what you are looking at. read more
