This work is a vinyl reproduction of an original piece by Dana Powell-Smith. You will find it in Terminal B of the Indianapolis Airport as part of the Indianapolis Airport Authority Art Program, in conjunction with the Indianapolis Art Council. Powell-Smith is known to use household items such as a spatula, strainer, takeout cup to paint her works. She thinks outside of the box and is known for her use of deep, majestic colors and metallic hues, as is evident in this piece's background,
The abstract mural depicts the beautiful people of the world, dressed in all their glory. The people in the mural are in a form of what Powell-Smith calls "triangle people". They were given hairstyles that would be suited for a family reunion or wedding.
I am not a fan of the piece. It is not my taste. I am not a big abstract art guy to start off with. The black figures do contrast well with the colorful whimsical background and it is definitely attention getting. I did not really see the images at first glance. If you are flying Southwest Airlines out of IND, you will not be able to miss this mural. It is interesting to note that the mural wraps around 3 sides of the wall that it is located.
If you are wondering what #Georgettegranddaughter means, Powell-Smith is the granddaughter of Harlem Renaissance artist Georgette Seabrooke Powell. Powell-Smith fondly remembers joining her grandmother in DC as she activated while Powell-Smith painted alongside other children.
Being that this mural is in the airport, this is definitely not a destination mural. You will only see it if you are flying in or out of the airport. Since it is after the security check point, you need an airplane ticket to see it. So, if you happen to be in the airport be sure to check it out before it is gone. It will be leaving in 2023 when the restaurant, The Tap, assumes the space. read more
