Service is always great. Cool atmosphere. Good beer and food. Always a great selection of movies, new and old.

Wow! The best movie theater in Des Moines. I was impressed. I was like a little kid in a candy shop and enjoyed the whole experience. The selection of beers (BTW all their own brews!), food, and seating. We were in theater 6 with dine in service. It was very upkept. Seats were clean and as if they were not worn out like other theaters. Little tables for plates. Nicely spaced out. Reclining chair feature too. Even the service was exceptional. At the bar we were greeted and served by Bryce. All the beer samples and great convos made the bar experience excellent. At our seats we were served by Davin. Very outgoing, spunky attitude and happy to serve. Took our orders and accommodated food intolerances. Ordered the steak and avocado wrap with fries. Delicious and came out piping hot and crisp. It was packed for National cinema night. Flix also has their own deals: Wednesday nights are a great deal on movie tickets- $5.25. Highly recommend. Great date night/double date night. *Note* 18% gratuity automatically added to all tabs

Flix has been a go-to when out and about at Merle Hay Mall. It's a must to stop at Flix for a beer. I'm not much of a movie go-er, so my review will be about the bar and service aspect. Beers are brewed on-site, I believe. The Luna Rosa was my favorite until they changed the recipe. Still good, just not as good as before. They also serve other local beers along with ciders and cocktails. Food is decent, typical for bar food. I'm more likely to order an appetizer than a meal. Brisket loaded fries have some nice flavor. Considering it's a movie theater, the butter popcorn is good as well. Good friendly service. Staff is always nice and attentive. I was given a coupon for a free appetizer when my order was incorrect. Overall, a great place for a pit-stop while at the mall. Recommended.

3.5* (out of 5) Food: 4* Atmosphere: 3* Value: 3* Service: 4* 01/22/2022 We stopped here primarily to use our Pub Pass for a free beer, then ended up utilizing their $2 Off Iowa beer special instead and ordered some food. The beer selection is good and the Pork Quesadilla (see picture) that we ordered was better than we expected - it was very good. While it is a very casual, open and loud atmosphere adjacent to the movie theater in the mall, the beer and food are better than average and I'd recommend it for a stop after work or a casual night out. Margarita Pizza, Yum!

I love coming here. The prices are fair. The food has gotten SO much better since they first opened. The cheese curds, pizza, and fries are delicious. I recently had the buffalo wings and was very impressed. I thought I would just get 6, but got 8 or 9 good sized wings. They were perfect!

Turns out Flix does brunch! We went this morning for the 10:45 showing of the Black Panther sequel. While the movie itself was about 30 minutes longer than I would have liked, the service at Flix was great and we were largely happy with the brunch and our drinks. My only complaint is I wish they had a few more options on the menu for breakfast OR knock the ones they have out of the park. I'm usually a sweet breakfast person and while the bacon was perfect, the French toast was only fine. I'd love to see something else in that world in the future, like a waffle or pancake dish. FYI: Their online menu is currently out of date.

Always a blast to visit; make sure to come early have/try a couple craft beers, get your ticket bought right at the bar "save time", for more beer haha....then close out that tab and go get settled in early, the movie highlights/cameos are always well done. Take your half beer from the bar in soo you don't get thirsty before ordering, put in your order keep the beer coming, remember you are there for at least two hours with food. I always get a starter course in early then during movie I'll pop in a snacking order with soda mid way; I tend towards the Bavarian Pretzel with Beer Mustard & Cheese sauce, pretty much always too haha....I really soaks up the brews and is salty enough to introduce the soda in the mix...sounds like alot "Yes" soo skip your breakfast ;))) sit back, relax, sip, eat, and really enjoy the Show...Of Course! I do!

We stopped in after perusing the Merle Hay Mall shops and attractions. They have some great new seasonal beers in house. We grabbed some food because the marketing made it look irresistible and that it was. Great flavors and portions feel appropriate for the pricing. Was a bit slow to get out the food. Note: there is an 18% gratuity automatically applied to your bill no matter party size.

Ask the Community - Flix Brewhouse

Is there a day that has special discounts; like for admission or food?

There are quite a few deal days at FLIX. Monday - $2 off all beers brewed in Iowa…

So I am excited to try this place out next Wednesday for a 10:45 show. Do they deliver your food in theater for all showtimes?

Yep!

Do these seats recline at all? Are they similar to the recliner seats at the Altoona theater? Thank you!

They don't recline but they're comfortable. I'm not familiar with the Altoona theater.

I have to admit for such a small place I wasn't expecting HOMEMADE RANCH I can't stress it enough that any place that has homemade ranch has my heart completely. It was a beautiful evening, so we decided to sit outside on their patio. Shouldn't admit it...but we had to ask our waitress what the lettering was on the side of the building (see picture) - but hay, we are near Drake. Following a Lucky Casa Margarita (see picture), we ordered our meals. My wife ordered the Dogtown Burger w/ Onion Rings (see picture) and I went with the Boneless Wings w/ Blueberry BBQ sauce (see picture). As is our modus operandi, we shared tastes of each and both thoroughly enjoyed both plates. While me wife isn't usually a big berry sauce person, she agreed that the wings were very good. Unfortunately, I was too full to sample one of the awesome looking desserts on the menu...so that will be the reason for another stop! Her pasta was tasty and she wasn't able to finish it. My chicken crunch salad was the same salad I had before. It could've used a little more chicken. The pieces were small. The dressing is yummy. Y'all. We need to have a serious conversation about this salad…read more I ordered the ahi tuna salad expecting something that might actually qualify as a tasty meal. What arrived was essentially lettuce wearing a little tuna hat. Lettuce, shredded carrots, quartered tomatoes, tuna and dressing. That's the entire cast. No interesting textures, no creative ingredients, no little something that makes you think, "Oh, THAT'S why I ordered this." Nothing. This salad had side salad energy so aggressively that I half expected someone to bring me an entree afterward. In fact, I'm giving Urban Grill the gold medal for one of the least interesting restaurant salads I can remember eating. And that's saying something, because I have eaten a lot of salads. At least give me some nuts. Some cheese. Fruit. Avocado. Something crunchy. Something unexpected. Hell, throw a few croutons on there and let's pretend we're having fun. The restaurant itself is actually pretty nice, although it's apparently designed for groups of four or fewer. We had five people and had to wait for a table because there are only two tables in the entire restaurant that can accommodate more than four people. In a restaurant that size, that seems odd. The saving grace was our waiter, who was excellent. I didn't get his name, but he was attentive, charming and genuinely pleasant, and he deserves credit for making the experience better than the food did. The people I was dining with didn't have anything particularly bad to say about their meals, but nobody seemed to be having a religious experience either. Mostly sandwiches and salads, and nothing that made me think that I need to come back here and try that. And that's the problem with Urban Grill: nothing is really wrong with it. Nothing is particularly right with it, either. It's pleasant. It's serviceable. It exists. But in a city with plenty of restaurants competing for your attention, "perfectly adequate" isn't exactly a compelling reason to return. So, Urban Grill, I'm afraid I'm going to have to channel Randy Jackson from American Idol: It's gonna be a no from me, dog.

There is no dine in seating, but a friendly staff of two will take your order and deliver it to where you park and wait. The wait is somewhat long due to the staffing of this small business, but once you get your entree you either drive to your quiet space or sit where you are, and smile as you taste the delicious crunchiness of your catfish or hush puppies. This is a small family locally owned business we should support as we wait for "Good Friday," or those other opportunities to say we wish you much success into the future.

Tucked into an unremarkable strip off Merle Hay Road, in that no-man's-land between a gas station…read morecar wash and a triumvirate of sandwich chains slinging the same elongated, meat-stuffed mediocrity -- sits Cajun Belle. You could blink and miss it. Most probably do. But for those paying attention, there's a faint promise here -- a whiff of something soulful and Southern cutting through the beige hum of suburbia. This is a drive-thru only operation, the sort of setup that usually spells disaster for fried food. We all know the routine: your hot, crispy prize entombed in a plastic clamshell, slowly suffocating under its own steam until it becomes a sad, soggy relic. But Cajun Belle has been on my radar for a while -- ever since I stumbled upon it months ago by accident. I remember pulling up, eyes bright with hope, only to find it closed for catering. That kind of heartbreak sticks with you. Fast-forward a few months and fate (or maybe hunger) brought me back. I was surrounded by the usual suspects -- Subway, Jimmy John's, Cheba Hut -- each hawking their own version of the same tubular monotony. I didn't want that. I wanted something with character. Something cooked by someone who actually gave a damn. Cajun food in Iowa is always a gamble -- fried shrimp filtered through the lens of the Midwest. But I was in the mood to roll the dice. I debated the gumbo but landed on the shrimp po' boy, mostly because I wanted to see if anyone up here could pull off a fried shrimp sandwich that didn't taste like regret. I added hush puppies to the order, because you can't not. Everything's cooked to order here -- no heat lamps, no reheated sadness. I sat in the drive-thru line for eight minutes, watching exhaust curl into the autumn air, waiting for something worth the time. When the bag finally hit my hands, it was hot, fragrant, and alive with promise. I parked across the street, in the quiet anonymity of a half-empty lot. This was not a meal to eat in front of anyone else. Some food demands privacy -- the kind of honest, slightly shameful pleasure best enjoyed alone. The shrimp po' boy was a beast. Overstuffed, the kind of sandwich that dares you to get through it without a mess. The shrimp were perfect -- golden, crisp, tender, actual flavor -- which is more than you can say for most fried seafood this far north of the Gulf. The breading had bite, even after the short steam bath of transport. The drizzle of sauce -- something like honey mustard -- didn't quite land. It was sweet where it should've been sharp, indecisive where Cajun should be bold. Still, the shrimp carried the day. The hush puppies, though -- those were the moment. Hot, perfectly fried, full of cornmeal bite and savory depth. You could make a meal out of them alone. The dipping sauce they came with was a miss -- thin, sour, lifeless -- but it didn't matter. A squeeze of lemon or a dash of malt vinegar and a cold beer would've made them transcendent. Cajun Belle has a perfect 5/5 on Yelp, and while I can't quite stretch that far, I get it. There's something about finding a little piece of Louisiana soul food hidden in the land of pork tenderloins and ranch dressing that feels like a secret worth keeping. For me, it's a solid 3, maybe a 4 if you hit it on a good day. Give me a shrimp basket, fries, and that vinegar I keep dreaming about, and we're easily talking 4.5 -- maybe perfection in a Styrofoam box. In a stretch of road dominated by fast-food sameness, Cajun Belle is a rare thing -- a place with identity, with pride, with the audacity to serve real food through a drive-thru window. It's not fancy. It's not polished. But it's good. And sometimes, that's all you need.
