Last Saturday, however, I was finally able to set foot inside the establishment and only because the coffee shop I was planning to chill out in is full. The Market is really what its name implies. It's a small shop that sells deli, cheese, fresh vegetables, imported food items, and frozen meat and fish products. What really caught my eye was the artisanal ice cream that they carry. Not only do they have the now popular Carmen's Best, but they also have Sebastian's and Adam's as well. As a deli, they have sandwiches, salads, pizza, and coffee. On the downside, the shop has a very limited seating capacity. I was lucky to visit on a Saturday afternoon. According to the cashier, their store usually fills up with customers on weekdays, especially during lunch and merienda hours. The hot summer afternoons of recent weeks make this a good place to unwind and drink coffee. Most probably to maintain the freshness of their goods, the temperature inside the shop is cool.

The twist here is you get to create your own meals. You choose a style (rice, pasta or bread); your flavor of meatballs (classic or Swedish); the sauce of your choice (marinara, bechamel, gravy, BBQ & more); and then load it up with as many toppings as you like. My favorite is the Breakfast of Champions with 3 meatballs served over Java rice with mushroom gravy, crispy bacon and a fried egg on top. It's great for lunch or dinner too. They recently updated their menu and added several new interesting dishes. The Great Meatball is a giant (think baseball size) meatball stuffed with gooey mozzarella cheese, fried until crispy and tired with marinara and bechamel sauces. If you love meatballs or even just meat, this is the dish to try! For a healthier option their Sangria Glazed Salmon is delicious with a wonderful sweet & savory glaze that really compliments the fish. Since it's Venice, almost all the restaurants here serve pizzas. As part of their new menu The Meatball Revolution now serves red tomato tortilla crust Pizzas. They're super thin and crispy and are great for sharing. If you love pizza it's definitely something new with trying. For desserts they have ice cream cookie sandwiches with freshly baked cookies and homemade ice cream. But my favorite is their newest dessert the Brownie Supreme. If you love chocolate, you will love this dessert! It's a freshly baked brownie tired with homemade vanilla ice cream & shaved chocolate. For drinkers they serve bottomless margaritas, mojitos and sangria. For the kids (or anyone in the mood for something sweet) they serve milkshakes and floats using their homemade ice creams. Service is very attentive and the staff are always friendly. The ambiance has a cool modern look to it. But, for me, the idea of cooking my own food is the reason why I like Tong Yang. It allows me to control the ingredients I put in my food. If I don't want to add meat, I can choose not to. That's unlike most all-you-can-eat places where the dishes are already cooked. You cannot tell the restaurant anymore to avoid putting this or that ingredient. If I want to put lots and lots of mushrooms and vegetables, I can do so. One of the reasons why I keep coming back to Tong Yang is to eat plenty of mushrooms because on my own I cannot buy even ¼ as much as those served in Tong Yang. At least, looking for and buying the different kinds of mushroom is off my list. I only need to get as much as I can eat and cook them. If I want to put different kinds of fish or seafood into my sinigang, no one can tell me that it can't be. At home, some family members may find it odd for me to put two types of fish or maybe mix salmon with shrimp. Or, if they don't find it odd, they would stop me for budget constraints. One type of fish or seafood may already be expensive. Adding another would really put a dent in our wallets. In that case, I couldn't be stubborn. But, in Tong Yang, the ingredients are there and the price is set so I can do as I wish.
