We went to The Flight Deck restaurant for Fathers Day for 6 people. We had a reservation. We had excellent service ice tea was always full even noticed my ice was melted and gave me a fresh glass! Attention to details was obvious and she was very friendly. We had fresh clams, peach boysenberry salad, Ruben, Salmon, fried oysters, and fettuccini Alfredo. All entrees tasted great and the portion sizes were very generous. Most importantly the prices! WOW.....the value of our very large meal for six and drinks entree was very reasonable! Lastly the ambiance was great especially if you enjoy watching aircraft arrive and depart directly in front of the restaurant. 180 degree view is also quite nice as the Willamette Valley views are gorgeous with the mountains as a backdrop! I highly recommend the Flight Deck for casual dinning or even a business lunch. We will definitely return soon and thank you! read more

The sea bass tacos were great. Mark had fish and chips. Bill got the blt and Pam got peach, blueberry and prawn salad. Everyone stated their food was great. Bill and Pam said they eat there often. The service was great. Best part is that it's sets off the runway of the airport and you can watch the planes and helicopters land. The main wall is all glass. So that was the best entertainment to watch. Bill said he has an app on his phone that lets you put in the tail numbers of the planes to see where they've been or going. The fish was the same result, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The french fries were slender and crispy, with a good outer crunch. The tarter sauce was a creamy dill mixture and the ranch dressing had a good flavor. The wife got the crab melt which had a good taste. Waitress was friendly and the service attentive. My family has been on a bit of a Flight Deck kick lately and we've been there twice this year! Both visits were good! It's a family friendly spot with a cool view of the Salem airport runways! The food is good and there's a good variety of classic breakfast items. I enjoyed the chicken fried steak (huge portion, good gravy!) and a special French toast that was good! The service both times with friendly but they seem to be understaffed! It always seems to be just two servers handling the whole place and they're racing around. I don't really blame them for slow food or forgotten items because they're working really hard! read more

We were looking forward to what we thought would an interesting lunch stop on our way to the coast. Arrived at 12:05. Husband ordered an Philly cheese steak San which. I ordered a chicken club. 40 minutes later we received our food. My husband's meal was just ok...over cooked but eatable. Mine was absolutely terrible....a small chicken breast that probably started out a quarter of an inch thick. By the time I got it is was much less than that ...totally overcooked and completely tough on both sides. The bacon was charred and I had to remove half of it. Small bun, a bit of onion, one tomato slice, a few tater tots and some ranch dressing. i struggle to eat it what i could in 10 minute as we had no time left to reorder and I was starved. I gave up about half way through and left to get more food in the RV. The waitress deemed it ok to reduce my $19 plate by half only after I and husband complained. It my opinion a full refund was the only solution for ruining a lunch and making us late back on the road. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant al all and we definitely won't be back. read more

Decided to have dinner at the flight deck Monday night. A few tables were taken was nice and quiet in there. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. The menu was quite large quite varied. I ordered the clam strips dinner. The clams were cooked perfect baked potato, green beans, and a salad.. We ordered the shrimp appetizer. The shrimp were huge cooked to perfection. Had a cheesecake. I have the best time here! I'm a regular usually weekly to biweekly at the least and the food and drinks never miss! The staff are amazing and always make you feel welcome, checking up on you often enough but not taking time away from you and your loved ones since they are usually busy enough. It's a popular place amongst the locals. Especially if you like anything to do with aviation and aeronautics. Watching the planes go back and forth is quite a trip. This was my first time here. The view was really neat to see planes take off and land. The drink was the best part, super yummy! The food was decent, but my friend didn't like the fries. The reason I'm not sure about being back was the bone in the fish sandwich. I felt something in my throat while waiting for the bill, but didn't want to "cause a scene." I rushed to the bathroom after and pretty much threw up half my food and the bone moved slightly. At this time, I wasn't sure what was in my throat. We hurried to get home and I kept coughing to get it out, but it wouldn't. We decided we were going to go to the ER, but I looked in the mirror right before going and was able to reach and get it out. I'm a bit scared to eat a fish sandwich again or go here. read more

In general, the food here is pretty good! We go here frequently because our granddaughter is obsessed with airplanes, and we can watch planes land and takeoff while eating. Sandwiches and soup are very good. Salads are large. I was amazed at how much meat was on the BLT! Service has always been great, with happy servers and friendly staff. The RC planes hanging from the ceiling adds to the airport/airplane ambiance. Other than the planes, the restaurant feels much like an old diner. The one dish I had that really wasn't good was the fish and chips. I don't know why, but the breading on the fish was green, and turned my stomach, just from looking at it. I took one bite and couldn't eat anymore. Avoid the fish and chips. Honestly, they are the worst of any restaurant I've ever been to. All other food has been great. read more

This was a fun lunch stop today - good food and we got to watch aircraft which was fun Extensive menu, relaxed service, they were busy but our waitress was great. Had a hard time choosing but we got a burger, club sandwich and a reueben. Everyone enjoyed their meals, I had the Reuben . Bread was perfectly toasted and nice balance of ingredients which did not cause the sandwich to get soggy Just the right amount of tots- I hate it when there is too many and I can't finish and they get wasted. My wife arranged a surprise dinner for a party of 13 to celebrate my patent being issued and published. We arrived at 6:00 PM as the final guests for the surprise.I was seated at the back-middle of the table against the wall. Our waitress took my order last, and I requested the fish and chips. While the rest of my family was served and eventually finished their meals, my plate never arrived.When the waitress finally checked on the table, everyone was done eating or nearly finished. She did not even notice that I had no food until I pointed it out to her. She then said it would be "right out."By the time she finally brought my meal out in a box, some members of our party had already left the restaurant. She stated my food would be free of charge, but unfortunately, the fish was completely inedible, with grease literally dripping off the breading.My wife paid over $250 for this dinner. As the guest of honor, I spent my entire surprise celebration watching my family eat, and I left your restaurant hungry. An oversight of this scale for a large party is completely unacceptable. This was the first time going to this restaurant. Disappointed to say the least. The waiter took our order and came back several times to tell us they had run out of a food item. We had to cancel the appetizer order because nothing else was appealing. The salad, if you can call it that, was lettuce and 5 carrot sticks thrown on top. Food was average overall. Definitely not worth having had dinner there. Only thing decent was the service. Poor Lincoln having to tell us food wasn't available. Won't be returning or recommending this place! read more

We were greeted and sat by a huge window looking out on to the airport. There were several planes parked in front of us and they were fun to look at. The bleu Cleese salad dressing had big chunks of cheese in it. I like that. I asked for my steak to be medium and it came out rare. Our sever saw it and sent it back no problem came back fine. I spontaneously decided to visit this place after errands one weekday. I arrived a little after 11am; I recommend arriving around then, as it got quite busy about 15 to 30 minutes later. The atmosphere is unique and cool, with big windows overlooking the Salem airport runway. There is a ton of cool model aircraft hanging from the ceiling. From the outside, the building reminds me of a baby Dulles International Airport. I love that mid-century modern style! The service was very friendly and the atmosphere comfortably relaxed. I think this place has a lot of regulars, but I felt very welcome as a newbie. I ordered a soft drink and took a look at the menu. It was quite large, with American diner type food predominating. I felt like getting something unique, so I picked the Off the Runway Melt with potato salad. This sandwich was different, but in a good way! It was pastrami, pepper jack cheese, coleslaw, and fries with mustard on grilled sourdough. It was better than it might sound, and all the disparate elements actually worked together nicely! The coleslaw lightened the sandwich and the fries provided some crunch. It was different but delicious and perfectly grilled. The potato salad was pretty good, creamy but a little strong on the onions for me. I got the peanut butter cheescake to go. I am not sure if they make their desserts or get them from another business. The cheesecake was just okay. This place has a great, unique atmosphere and view. The service is super friendly and the food is delicious, well-prepared diner fare. I am interested in trying more of their lunch offerings and also trying them for dinner. I love this place. It's just...neat. The restaurant sits next to the Salem Airport, which is nothing to write home about, but is certainly an airport! There are huge windows overlooking the runways and, I noticed, there is access to the restaurant from the airplane parking areas. I took one of my sons here on a Daddy/Singleton Day (I have twins and we occasionally split up days with them so that they each get special attention from each parent) and it was fun to watch an airplane land, taxi into a parking space, and then the pilot and his wife walk down the runway and come into the restaurant. He's never seen that at the Portland airport or any of the other commercial ones we've flown out of, and it made it sort of an "experience" for him (he was eight at the time, so, you know, we make things fun). The food is your standard restaurant food. Burgers, chicken strips; diner type food. But what's kind of cool is that each time we've gone, I've noticed they have specials that are off menu. With my son, he was in luck, because they had a fried chicken special. It was literally half a chicken, fried up. Breast, wing, thigh, leg. Along with a huge thing of mashed potatoes, a biscuit the size of my head, and some roasted vegetables. He wasn't able to finish it, not even close, so I had some and it was excellent! Really, really well done; juicy inside, crispy breading. I had a double bacon cheeseburger and it was everything you'd expect out of one. If I had any notes, it was that it seemed a little under-seasoned. But nothing that would make me send it back. Top that off that our wait staff, a young lady whose name escapes me right now, was super friendly and very responsive to my son. She listened, enraptured, as my son told her about seeing the musical Cats! and she suggested one of their specialty, non-alcoholic cocktails for him to try. All in all, this is a great, often overlooked place. Prices are reasonable, food is good and abundant, and the decor is suitable to an airport-overlooking lounge. read more

I showed the waiter and he said he could place another order for 'well done' fish. That's not really a term one uses for fried fish. Just 'done' would have been good. Hidden amid the airport buildings and hangars, The Flight Deck Restaurant exudes casualness where you can sit down, relax and be yourself. A small bar is hidden on one side of the building, where a wall separates the dining area. They have a simple American Diner type menu, with daily lunch and dinner specials. On this particular evening, the dinner specials where Prime Rib and Opah (Moonfish). As you can see from my pic below, I choose the Prime Rib. It was nice, simple and very tasty. I want to like this place so bad! The idea of having simple food and drinks while watching aircraft take off and land sounds great, but falls flat. The entire place just reeks of "average". Nothing is overpriced or underpriced. Just sort of..."meh". The bar is "meh". The food is "meh". The only way this concept can survive past the regulars (who have probably been coming in here for thirty years) is to completely remodel. The building needs rebuilt, modernized, updated, and expanded. Sadly, without more commercial flights out of Salem, I dont foresee any investor showing interest in that idea. Disagree with me about updating the building? Use the bathroom. Sit on the deck. Go play video lotto. Stopped by for a late lunch/early dinner with a group of five. We were greeted by a friendly and accommodating server. She was able to answer all our questions and manage any requests we had. The food was great from the calimari appetizer, the salads and soup, to the entrees. Unfortunately the chicken with orange sauce was overcooked, but the vegetables and rice were excellent. The shepherds pie was very good as were the grilled oysters. I would highly recommend the Flight Deck , especially if you need to be at Salem Airport. read more
