The sales rep (who I won't name) helped us select carpet and scheduled measurement with one of their preferred installers, Carpet Workroom. So far so good. A few days later, I received the proposal and went into immediate sticker shock at the $6,785 price tag. $2,995 of which was for "fabrication and installation of the stair treads", plus another $1,250 for "time spent removing the old stair tread carpet pieces and preparing the substrate for the installation of the new carpet tread pieces". When I asked the sales rep for an explanation why these costs were so high, I received the following reply: "The amount of time it will take to prepare the stair treads by removing the adhesive that exists is costly...removal of the adhesives from the current installation can take a very long time to remove even with chemicals and scraping." Here's the crux of the matter: No adhesive was used on the stair treads or on any other part of the current installation. Only traditional carpet tack strips were used. The stair treads can easily be removed in a matter of minutes, and the carpet tack strips can be reused to install the new carpet. I pointed this to out to the sales rep with photos to prove it and indicated willingness to revisit the bid if he would provide a revised proposal with a reasonable price for fabricating and installing the stair treads. He did not reply. I subsequently went to another local company. Their bid? $2,800. Right about what I thought the job should and would cost. Caveat emptor.

They charged a flat fee for the flooring and a very reasonable hourly fee for the molding. We would definitely use Rug Bug again for future projects, and I would highly recommend them. UPDATE: we had Rug Bug install cork flooring in three rooms of our house. They did everything that they said they would do when they said they would do it, they finished early, and Jason's attention to detail was spectacular. We liked the final product/spec on our wood flooring for the most part, but the overall experience…read morewith Floors55 was disappointing. There were some fairly easy punshlist/corrections that they are completely willing to fix, but there are other larger ones that the salesperson @ Floors55 completely brushed off. Ultimately, the amount of excuses they made for poor installation were just unacceptable - at some point, a company needs to take ownership. Regarding larger items, mentioned above: -The cut-back on the floors was wildly inconsistent at walls. We shouldn't have to rely on a floor base buildup of 1.5-2 inches to hide wood edges from our perspective. I recognize that they were matching the previous base thickness (flat base plus quarter round trim), but as you can see in the photos, the edges were all over the place. A little more thought would have gone a long ways. Their excuse was matching the existing base, but as already mentioned, we shouldn't have rely on an accessory quarter round to cover the edges. -The install team pretty much destroyed the paint layers on the existing base in the house - the primary base top and quarter-round top were not sliced during temp removal so a lot of the paint was ripped/pealed back. Where the installer's pulled the quarter round out, the re-install was sub-par - the quarter round was loose and not tight to primary base or floor. -The Install team did a partial float in some "hot" areas of the floor which definitely improved the look of the floor. One notable location they missed was @ the entry - as seen in float level photo, it is sloped quite a bit - the floor now creaks in this area. Floors55 excuse: this was only a partial float operation. In my opinion, this location was badly missed and would have taken 2 minutes to float. -We were very adamant that the wood terminate @ a specific location as it approached the fireplace. I marked the floor with a dimension, put blue tape down, noted where our future tiling would start, and reviewed it with Foreman prior to work being done. The final wood location ended up ~1.5" short of our directed location. Their excuse: "just use a wider T mold to cover the gap." This is an unacceptable response and it grossly limited the transition type we could use for the new tile. No prior notice was given as to why they decided to short this location. -There are supposed to be some "natural" imperfections and variations in the wood-to-wood seams for this Santa Fe product, but we felt there were some locations that went beyond this natural standard - some of the locations looked like they had been cut with a hand saw or a saw that needed sharpening. Floors55 response: "these are natural imperfections." I will leave it up to the people reading this review to determine if that is reasonable; example photos included. -Visible glue and muddy in multiple locations (Floors55 has agreed to fix these issues of course). -Damaged locations (Floors55 will fix these). -Scuffed boards - Floors55 considers this a natural look. We disagree. The photos do more justice than my review I think, but bottom line, we felt that Floors55 was more concerned and interested in coming up with excuses for poor install than actually finding ways of fixing the issues. I realize that some of these might be considered standard of care and in tolerance, but perception is really important - with so many big/small/punshlist issues, the overall success of this install is quite low and I would not use their services in the future. Overall, we do like the Santa Fe Magnolia wood product though.

Fabulous Floors completely FAILED us…read more Very POOR workmanship. There are many gaps between the floors and doors/door frames. There are gaps between the base shoe and frames. The base shoe they used is far too wide to match the existing molding. The completed work looks as though a novice did the job. See the attached photos. When I confronted the owner, he replied, "there's nothing I could do about that. I specialize in flooring not door molding or frames. I can't help how that looks." Seriously? Much of this could have been prevented if they laid down a layer of plywood under the hardwood floors. I ended up having to spend waaay more money to hire another contractor to fix all the issues they caused. Furthermore, I specifically requested water based coating for our hardwood floors throughout our entire house to reduce exposure to VOCs. The owner agreed he would apply water based coating and even said he would go out and buy the water based coating the day we discussed the plans. His workers applied oil based coating. After I confronted him with this huge error, he argued that oil based coating is better anyway and that I didn't know what I was talking about. He would not initially acknowledged the mistake, and after repeatedly telling him he was at fault, he confessed that he forgot to tell his workers to apply water based coating instead of oil based coating. Very unprofessional.

Mike came over and spent a lot of time with me and helped me fix the problem. He was knowledgeable, very careful and made sure to test an area in my pantry to make sure that the floor looked good. He found a solution that eliminated all of the scratches on our floor and provided a very reasonable price quote to do a screening and cover the floor with a new layer of sealer. I was very impressed by Mike, I found him to be honest and knowledgeable. I would hire him in a heartbeat and highly recommend him!
