Kanata Farmers' Market - $ but better than beef IMO

    Kanata Farmers' Market

Just love it here. Never really been to a farmer's market…read morethat I didn't like! Great location, open rain or shine. Dogs welcome on leash. Friendly vendors that I love to support and I really like the selection. Lots of parking. I get new things each time I go. I'm a huge fan of the fresh veggies. Very laid back. Live music would be the only thing that would make this place even better. Maybe a food truck.

I love how farmer's markets are cropping up all over the city! Well, ok, there's this one, and the…read moreold one in Carp; still waiting for the one in Stittsville open up... one day! The farmers are being really creative, providing pickled garden vegetables; fresh breads of different unimaginable varieties; all kinds of fresh veggies and so on. This market can be found Saturday mornings in the parking lot of that little plaza on the south side of Hazeldean at Carbrooke, where the Shoppers Drug is located at the east end of the plaza. So, there's plenty of parking. One thing, though: I really don't find the prices are that good. Why is it more expensive to buy things that are local? It's fun to go to these places, and splurge on ourselves once in a while, but I can't afford to shop this way all the time. Maybe it's time for me to start a serious garden for myself? Ah but then I'd miss the excitement of going to the Market! We did shopt here; purchased a tomato plant, and wonderful pickled garlic (oh boy was my breath bad! But I haven't caught a cold since!)

Best Price Oriental Market - Love it here. My lil haul! Friendly service!

If course, noodles, coconut milk and red Thai curry paste. Chili and sesame oil. So many aisles and a fun snack area to check out. I don't buy from the meat case here. Nor the freezer. I check expiry dates... Just in case. If I could wish for one thing it would be more fresh veg here. I love coming in and recommend it to others that I know whom are also addicted to noodles!

There are not a lot of places where you can get Southeast Asian groceries in Kanata, so this place…read moreis like the only game in town if you live in the far West End. If you're willing to go into town to go to Chinatown or go down by the airport to go to T&T you'll have more options, but in the West End where Kanata is, it's slim pickings. Granted some of the local mainstream grocery stores like Loblaws, Real Canadian Superstore, and even Walmart, carry some Asian products, but they are mostly the Asian products that have gone mainstream like black bean sauce and udon noodles. However, if you want some of the harder to find ingredients, you'll need to go to an Asian grocery store and this one will have you covered. Their selection is not vast, but will do in a pinch. Prices are not low but they are not outrageous either. Although higher than T&T and Kowloon Market. Also not everything has prices listed, so you have to ask. I saw a bag of beef jerky by the cash that looked interesting with no price on it, I asked and it was over $30. In all fairness, beef is pricey these days, and it was a big bag, but I'm wary of spending over $30 to try something out, like what if I don't like it? Lol. Right now (early 2022) there seems to be a shortage of rice noodles (like Pad Thai noodles) in mainstream grocery stores for some reason, but this store has an entire aisle full of rice noodles! They also have some items from Nguyen Huong, a Vietnamese shop in Toronto, like Banh Mi (Vietnamese sandwiches), and Banh Bao (steamed bread with meat filling). They also have lots of different types of Vietnamese sausages (Cha Lua) by the cash register. On my most recent I picked up a pack of rice noodles ($2.80), and a slice of Pandan and Taro jelly cake ($2.50). Even though the cake was wrapped in plastic wrap, I could smell the coconut milk and pandan. Yum yum. I'm much closer to Chinatown than Kanata, so I have no real reason to go here, but I check it out if I find myself in Kanata. It's in a strip mall with lots of free parking.
