If you're staying overnight in Flam, which is the usual requirement in a Norway in a Nutshell package, you will find yourself with a dilemma - where do you go for dinner in a village with less than 400 people? You could go to the only other hotel in Flam, the Fretheim, and graze on their dinner buffet. Maybe you could go to the supermarket before it closes, pick up something microwaveable, knock on the door of a local resident, and hope they invite you in to cook it.
I probably wouldn't suggest this option. Or you could come here, a restaurant called Flamstova with an actual dinner menu. It was fairly empty except for a few people Jamie W. and I recognized from our Fjord Safari adventure (review: https://bit.ly/3pfKm5E). No starters or appetizers for us this time, just main courses. Jamie went for the 295 NOK ($30.40) Herb Marinated Chicken Breast which came with broccoli and fresh herbs, a green risotto, and a parmesan sauce (photo: https://bit.ly/3CvbfKX). The chicken was tender albeit on the small side.
However, the risotto was too mushy and the parmesan was creamy overkill. I ordered the 310 NOK ($31.90) Pork Cheeks Marinated in Aegir Beer. I fared better with the marinated red cabbage, beetroot coulis, potato purée, and jus (photo: https://bit.ly/3Ce8LjD). It wasn't as saucy as Jamie's dish, and I was pleased. I would just say it wasn't extraordinary dining, but hey, you can't afford to be picky in Flam during the evening hours. It wasn't like we could've ordered tacos or dim sum from GrubHub.
