We go to the location on Bell. All coaches are amazing. The gym is super clean, specially the bathrooms. My daughter has done so well, learning new techniques and routines. They do make you feel part of their family from day one. Holli is always smiling, and ready to help with any questions or concerns. We are going to miss this place now that my daughter has graduated. All of our memories are positive ones. Flames has a solid team program up through level 10 and their coaches are very experienced. They will teach your child how to reach their goals in a positive & supportive environment. They have a booster club to help offset competition costs (participation is optional). They do fun summer activities with the teams and spirit days/weeks throughout the year to keep morale high. They even provide onsite physical therapy for their athletes. We've been coming to Flames for over 2 years and they have become like family. The coaches are amazing. They take such great care with the gymnasts while also having fun. Their dedication to technique and being the best they can be without being demeaning or rude. The owner/coaches are strict but kind. I've watched them support the Kinder kiddos when they were scared/nervous. They can be tough but always with the best intentions. Our youngest daughter had a pretty good experience. The coaching could improve in giving more attention to the gymnasts. The facility was very clean. The main optional gym is crowded. Equipment is close together. Not sure if there is a safety requirement for how many gymnast should be in a building training at the same time and equipment layout. A teammate hit her head on the wall during beam. Run down, old equipment. Not the cleanest. My main issue was the owners/coaches not wanting to grow in their customer service and take responsibility for mistakes. One of the male coaches pushed our oldest daughter and told her to use her brain- we were told she misinterpreted him yelling at her. They did say they would speak to him about pushing her but he wasn't going anywhere. We were told our family is very nice but not a good fit for this gym and wanted to give us a referral. I agreed with them, it was not a good fit. We left without mentioning what happened to make us leave to her teammates. Just that she was referred to another gym. Weeks later we found out, a coach announced to the team she had been kicked out. Our daughter is 12 as you can imagine that hurt her feelings. We wanted the coach to take responsibility and apologize. read more

I signed my 6 year old daughter up for beginner gymnastic classes three weeks ago. The teacher is an older male; I don't know his name. Right off the bat he didn't seem friendly. Today was our third class. My daughter has no experience in gymnastics. The teacher was trying to teach her cartwheels and she couldn't do it. He yelled at her for a good 30 seconds until she cried. I went over to the door and asked a woman standing there if he yelled at her and she said yes. She looked concerned. I grabbed my daughter, left her sweater and shoes there and we left and won't be back. Again, my daughter is 6 and was in a beginner class. I don't recommend this place at all. I feel bad for anyone who comes here. Horrible coach. Shame on you! read more

TLDR; Owner dug her fingers into my child's arm, pushed kids, and snapped at them all within the first 10 minutes of an assessment. Longer explanation below. They opened a new location by my house (Happy Valley and Lake Pleasant) and since I could not find that on yelp I'll leave a review here since I'm told it's the same owner. I read some of the negative reviews and I was skeptical as I know yelp can have a few "one off" experiences, but decided to give them the benefit of the doubt. There's always someone who isn't happy, right? Well, now I see the validity. My daughter is 11 and had previously gone to Oasis Gymnastics and Spinettes. She loved both. She's been doing gymnastics for 2.5 years and when I told Flames that, they brushed me off and said she would have to be assessed. Which makes 100% sense to me. So I brought her in and immediately noticed that she was the oldest child in the room. I brushed it off thinking this was the time slot they had for her. I tried asking how they would assess her skill and was met with a vague answer. Nothing about how levels worked or how classes worked. I will say the front receptionist was kind and the waiting area was nice. They told me she'd be ready at four. 4:00 came and all I saw were 6 year olds waiting and they didn't tell her to come so I walked her over. They rushed her into a class of about 10 little kids so I sat down and figured they would maybe have her do something easy and if that was easy, they'd up the skill and watch her. NOPE. She basically sat and did headstands/stretches for 10 minutes while looking around wondering why she wasn't doing anything of substance. The receptionist walked over to me and immediately started asking me if she was going to sign up. I told her we'd like to but I needed to speak with my husband. She walked away and that's when I saw the coach/owner GRAB MY DAUGHTER BY THE ARM AND SHOVE HER toward the end of a line. But still, I ignored ALL alarms going off in my head and thought maybe they didn't intend to shove her. This is when i saw my daughter start to get visibly upset. Next thing I see is the owner/coach lining the kids up and pushing some in the back to hurry along. These were small children ranging from 6-8 years old. PUSHING them. She pushed my daughter to move and snapped at her to hurry. Next thing I know, my daughter comes walking over to me with tears in her eyes. This is a kid who is OBSESSED with gymnastics. Who has trained for two years and been pushed and challenged and injured while practicing and she STILL KEPT GOING. She wrapped her hands while bleeding and STILL kept doing her bar routine. I asked her what was wrong and she said the coach/owner of the gym was digging her fingers into her arm when moving her and when she tried to tell her she had already been to one "station" twice she snapped at her and said, "I don't care, JUST GO." So we left. I have a few questions for this gym. 1) before even looking at my daughter's skill, or answering my very simple questions about the level of coaching, you send someone over to ask me if we are signing up? 2) I understand tough love as a motivator, but this was our first experience. You don't know us or my child. Why is it okay to snap at her and dig your fingers into her arm? 3) No way in hell I'm forking over $100 a month so my kid can be snapped at, not challenged in any way, and grabbed. There are so many great places to go. If you're considering this company, go to Spinettes or Oasis instead. My kid is crushed because this place was close and she was so excited. read more

Agree with all the other bad reviews. And wish I would have checked prior to enrolling my daughter here. Shame on me. The coaches are bullies. They all look miserable like they hate their jobs and they treat the kids terribly. My daughter was belittled in front of other kids and was forced to hold a position for a long period of time when she expressed she was in pain. This has occurred a few times now so we are done here. I understand pushing kids to do better and improve but you certainly don't do it by belittling or causing pain and bruises. Pay attention parents when you're spectating because you will hear how awful the coaches are to the kids. I never once hear good job or any words of encouragement from the coaches. We have been going to flames for three months now and my kids (4 & 6) love it! The instructors are very patient and enthusiastic and both kids have learned a lot in a short period of time. We go to the Happy Valley location. The only downside is the location is a bit small and a lot of kids are crowded into it because it's a very popular place. My daughter said that Mija hit/chopped her on her upper leg and it hurt for a long time. To be absolutely sure, I asked her to tell me exactly what she was doing. She said she was standing after a move they were practicing. She expressed that she was going to complain, but she was afraid of getting in more trouble. That same night, as my daughter was getting out of the bath, I noticed a bruise on her right upper thigh. I asked her to tell me where exactly the lady had smacked her, without her knowing the bruise was there. She pointed to the exact area where the bruise was at. My daughter is at level 1, so she is not doing exercises where she can easily get bruised. Mija's rough techniques since the first class the girls attended, but I back off not wanting to over-shelter them. I wanted them to be challenged, to be pushed further than they thought they would be able to go. I wanted them to notice positive change in their skills and be motivated to continue going. When you want someone to learn, especially young children, you don't impose fear or intimidation on them. The children's focus goes to the fear of failing or being ridiculed, rather than towards the learning of the technique. She admitted to me and PD, that at times she may be a "little rough and intense." I have observed other instructors and for the most part, they have been good. I have pulled my kids from this academy. With Mija being the owner, and treating my child this way, I had no choice. read more

My daughter transferred to Flames Gymnastics almost 2 years ago after attending Arrowhead Spinettes for 12 years. Spinettes was the only gym she had known since she was 2 years old. My daughter was 14 years old at the time and coming back from a broken thumb injury. Gymnastics is a tough sport even when you are in shape. Coming back from an injury is very frustrating. To add to the frustration of a injury comeback, she knew no one at Flames. My wife and I are parents who just wants their children to be involved in something extracurricular to learn about developing good work habits for life, build relationships, and how to handle failure on the way to success. For the first time in my daughters like, we hit a critical point as she wanted to quit gymnastics. My wife and I were at a point we had never been before as we didn't want to force our daughter to do gymnastics but were concerned because deep down we felt it could be something else as we thought she truly loved doing it. The best advice we ever listened to was Flames Gymnastics and to have stay in gymnastics until she got all the skills back that she had before her injury and then let her make the decision on whether to continue or not. Flames coaches and parents went out of there way to make her feel at home from the very first visit. Fast forward a little over 1.5 years and our daughter has developed new gymnastics skills and relationships faster than we could've imagined. Thanks Flames! read more

My 6yr old daughter has been going to flames now for a few months, every Friday and Saturday. They work really well with her and take the time to provide her with the training she needs. She is still in level one and still has a lot of work to go before leveling up. The only thing I wish is that they would provide me (as the parent and very new to gymnastics world) more direction as to how i can help her to succeed and her progress thus far. It feels like she is going to be in level one for years at this rate... Other than that, this place is great! read more

We understand teaching methods may differ but this was unconscionable. Our daughter is only 4. Their methods showed no understanding of teaching skills. If I could gIve FGA 6 stars I would. We moved to PHX 2 years ago from LV where our daughter had started gymnastics at a gym we all loved. Not really knowing what the different gyms in this area were like we enrolled her in a gym that just didn't challenge her enough. We then enrolled her at a gym close to our house where it was so bad I was convinced she was going to quit gymnastics all together. During this time we were able to see different gyms , how their kids were competing, and see how coaches were with their gymnasts. We made the decision that FGA was going to be the place for our daughter and we couldn't be happier with the decision. The coaching staff is fantastic with all the girls and our daughters passion and love of gymnastics has once again been renewed. The coaches are tough and competitive gymnastics isn't for every child or parent. Gymnastics is a sport where you get out of it what you put into it and if you're child is willing and able to put in a lot of time and effort in practice then she (and you) will definitely see the progression and improvements to her technical skills. We look forward to many more years of happinesss (and yes some tears along the way) and look forward to seeing her growth as not only a gymnast but as a young woman because gymnastics teaches our children much more than just flips skills and tumbling. The time, effort,and caring that the coaches put into these kids carries over outside the gym into every aspect of their lives and we are grateful to be a part of the Flames family . read more

I signed my kids up for gymnastics as I thought it would be fun, and help them with balance/coordination/core strength etc.. Unfortunately, we really disliked our time at Flames. We showed up for our sons trial class only to learn that there was no class at that time; even though it was listed online and we called ahead to sign up. He got a private lesson and loved it. The teacher said he was ready for level one boys, so we signed him up for a class with that teacher. Our daughter loved the toddler teacher too. The next week the toddler teacher changed and our daughter had a meltdown, so we decided that she wasn't old enough for classes yet. Our son had a great lesson. The week after that our son's teacher changed to two younger guys. Our son ended up hurting himself trying to straddle the horse and was really upset overall. Afterwards one of the teachers pointed out that our son really needed to work on his strength. Our son begged us not to take him back and my husband called to see if he could get our money back. He was offered smaller class lessons for our son to help him build up his strength. When they showed up for the class it was the same young teacher from the week before. Instead of the small easier class we were promised he tried to put our son in with the level two boys. My husband complained and our son ended up getting a private lesson. We ended up not going for the last lesson even though we had prepaid for it. I have signed my son up for a different gym and it is significantly better. We have the same teacher every week at the same time. Their schedule is accurately posted online, and they e-mail us with holiday dates, and any changes. Our son absolutely loves it, and is gaining confidence and skill. read more

One year ago my daughters gym closed after decades of success training gymnasts and people. To Sandra and Dan, thank you. That being said, we picked up the tears and a shattered heart of our daughter and got a couple evaluations at higher profile gyms. I personally didn't like the environments of them. Coaches didn't ask my daughters name, nor mine. They were very rude and terse, acted like they could care less if we stayed or went. We chose a newer gym close to home. My wife liked the vibe of the owner. That poor decision became achingly clear after her competition season when most of her skills had diminished and her tumbling nearly vanished. After watching her coaches continually drop the ball regarding my daughters growth, and after a blood bath at state, (6.1 on floor), I pulled her and moved her to Flames. I had been watching this gym the entire competition season. They have gymnasts of all body types, are very attentive to their gymnasts and they do score well. I also admired how fundamentally sound they all were. Let me say that this wasn't an easy transition. The coaches are tough. But I'm ok with that. Gymnastics isn't a hobby. It's too expensive and involves so much as far as mental toughness, the uniqueness of competing against yourself, teammates and another team. I do not recommend this path for anyone. I also always gave my daughter the choice. She'd come home and talk about bullying, (girls will be girls), she'd come home and talk about the coaches not giving her enough positive feedback. To me, that's ok. Our children have to learn how to handle themselves. If you're landing on your head doing a double back, there's really nothing positive to say. If you're pulling a 7.5 vault average, you need coaching, not coddling. From the ownership to the coaching, Flames is extremely consistent. Codee and Toby truly have their hands in every aspect of their family's business, and care about every single gymnast that walks through the door. After 4 weeks, my daughter got the chance to redeem herself and compete. She upped her floor score by 2 points, she got her first 9, her first number one, (on bars, which she bested by a full point after finally slaying her kip) and had pbs on every event. Flames is the right fit for my daughter. She loves gym, she's a hard worker and she's very respectful. I highly recommend going in and having your child evaluated if you're looking for a new gym. Don't get me wrong, this sport is very intense and very demanding. I think that requires coaching and training that is executed with that same philosophy. Best of luck. read more

I have taken my child to flames a few times and as far as the instructors go they are ok. She has gotten hurt once but that is expected since it is gymnastics correct? I feel that the instructor should have informed me of the incidence since we (parents) are not allowed on the floor. Communication could be better with parents of beginners. The rules of the facility could be communicated a lot better. If there are certain parameters or rules that need to be followed it needs to be conveyed to parents and students clearly and not assumed that everyone knows what is expected. read more

I used to go to flames and I was in level one. I was at this gym for around a year and I never moved levels. There were other girls moving levels and I was stuck at level one. So I left flames and went to another sport. A while later I became interested in their tumbling classes. I was in tumbling 1 and it was very good. We worked on basic tumbling skills and my coach had me work on a round off for probably 3 months straight. Although I was tired of round offs I have a perfect round off now. The coaches at flames are ok. In my time at flames I would have many different coaches. I liked very few but the other coaches were either mean or thought the kid never had a chance in gymnastics so they wouldn't work with the kid. The owner was very nice at first but after a few months she became very bitter and rude to everyone. The gym is very dirty and not well maintained. In the back of the gym is all of their trophies. All their trophies are covered in dust and upstairs in the back is terrible. I would recommend this place if it had better service, better coaches, and much cleaner environment. read more
