Five Points MARTA Station is the only station where MARTA riders can transfer from the trains going in the north/south directions to the east/west directions and vice versa. Because of this, it's the busiest train station, based on entries and exits, in the MARTA system. Employees try to keep this station clean, but with so many train riders passing through, the station is sometimes dirty. I personally have been in this station only to transfer to another train going in a different direction, and have never physically entered or exited the station using the gates. In this station, the north/south trains of the Red line and the north-east/south trains of the Gold line run on the tracks in the lower level. The east/west trains of the Green and the Blue lines run on the tracks in the upper level. Multiple escalators, stairways and elevators allow MARTA customers to move from one level to the other. Just a word of caution: If you're slow moving and you're transferring to another level, wait until most of the crowd gets ahead of you. Otherwise, you may get pushed and jostled by people hurrying to get by you. This is especially true if you're transferring to another train either before or after an event at either State Farm Arena, Mercedes-Benz Stadium or Georgia World Congress Center. Signage is accurate and helpful, but you have to know in which direction you want to travel to prevent confusion. Electronic signs in the stations let riders know the approximate remaining wait times for the arriving trains. A PA announcement lets everyone in the station which train is arriving. Both levels in this station are well lit, and there are few concrete benches to sit on while waiting for trains to arrive. Just like in every train station, MARTA customers need to ensure their safety by being aware of their surroundings and not stand too close to the train tracks. read more

It's been over a decade since I've ridden Marta and I was impressed how they've kept the prices low. It's only $2.50 per ride plus $1 for the ticket. You can go from any point A to point B for the same fare. It's very clean unlike other subway systems in the country (e.g. NYC) and the rules posted discourage any bad behavior. I took Marta most places while I was in Atlanta and never felt unsafe. It is a super-efficient and cost effective way to get around. read more

I've recently started a new job that requires me to commute to downtown Atlanta for five consecutive days. The train station I use is functional and clean, which is great for getting around. Occasionally, there are individuals who leave a mess behind, but I simply move to another train car if that happens. My main concern is the rainy weather, which can be a bit of an issue. My slacks, which happen to be from brands like Louboutin, Calvin Klein, and Michael Kors, tend to get soaked, especially around Five Points where the station's drainage system isn't ideal. The rainwater sometimes causes muddy spots on my pants, and that's not ideal, considering how my slacks lightly touch the ground. In general, the train station is quite clean, but it could definitely use some improvements for rainy days. The issue primarily arises when you exit onto the street, and it can get quite wet. Signage was reasonable and there are escalators for going from the one set of tracks to the other set of tracks. You'll want to know what direction you're heading as the platforms are different. A clear network map would have been helpful here for the novice MARTAns like me. I'm amazed when metro stations have cellular coverage. That's great that they put in the repeaters to make this possible. On the red/gold lines, Five Points is between Garnett and Peachtree Center. For the blue/green lines, it is between Dome / GWCC / Philips Arena / CNN Center station and Georgia State. At 7:30 on a weekday evening, it was desolate. read more

Not a fan of this station even though I go through it twice everyday. Huge station with super steep escalaters that make me fear them. Some strange folks here so pay close attention to your surroundings at all times. I actually quite like this station. Signs are very visible and clear, and the station itself is clean and spacious. Today was my first time here and I got to where I needed to go without any problems or having to ask a billion people for directions. I did asl the man in the bulletproof info booth a question about transfers, though. He couldn't hear me when he was in the box, so after determining I wasn't going to hurt him, he came out of the info booth and asked me to repeat my question. Like... what's the point of a bulletproof info booth if you have to leave it to hear people who are asking for the info? Another thing that I could see as a potential issue is that the mini-gates used to enter the station (where you tap your breeze card) are not unidirectional. As in, people can either go in or come out of any given gate. So what happens when it's crowded and people are wanting to come in and go out of the same one?! Maybe they make it unidirectional when needed but they were bidirectional both times I used it today. Overall, it was a fine experience using this station. I'm giving 3 stars, however, because of how safe I felt here (not very safe). I think inside the actual station is okay, but once you step outside onto the street, it's a different story. It may be a different experience for someone else, but as a small female traveling alone, I did not feel comfortable. I was waiting right across the street from the Five Points Station at the bus stop and was literally approached multiple times and asked inappropriate questions by strangers. I'm a tough cookie (I can deal a solid punch and kick, and I also carry pepper spray with me), so I held my own and I was fine, but for all those other solo travelers out there - be careful! And bring pepper spray! It was daytime when I went (11:30AM and 3:30PM), so I can't say what it's like at night. read more

OK Yelpers, I may be the only one who'll give 5 Points 5 Stars. But hear me out. Any major transfer station in the world is going to be a cluster. I won't argue that. But a cluster brings about some very unique opportunities. For example; through the extensive gray market at 5 Points, I've purchased my fair share of movies, managed to buy socks for the whole family, a GoPro for my nephew and a 13# bowling ball with the bag just to name a few things. So the gray market is a plus. Next noteworthy item is the people watching ability. I ain't gonna get any better. Now I'm not one of those guys who go to 5 Points and just stare at people. But if I'm transferring there, I keep my head on a swivel. You never know what you might see. Most recently I saw pirate with a real wooden leg and a live parrot while simultaneously walking a guinea pig. I can't make this stuff up. I'll post the pic later. My last thing (among many more) is the ability to transfer rail lines. I know that seems lame compared to the other positives, but it's nice to know I can go nearly anywhere from 5 Points. Many gripe about the safety which is a major concern but even with the pan-handlers and hopeless loiterers, most often none of them mean any harm. There was once a time when 5 Points station and its surrounding area was a booming epicenter, but that experience has been dispersed to various neighborhoods around the city. Now the degraded area is only convenient for City Hall, GA State and proximity to various venues. They even took the Braves shuttle away. I hear someone is putting up $20M to get it in shape. I wish that guy good luck. read more

Five Points MARTA station is my least favorite MARTA station. It's also the busiest. Five Points is the hub where the north-south and east-west lines meet. It's the only station where you can make the switch between the two lines. It's helpful to know the north-south line is located on the lower level and the east-west line is located on the upper level. I think most of Five Points station's traffic is from travelers passing through and switching trains. Otherwise, this stop is for those going to City Hall, Georgia State, and Underground Atlanta. The Braves shuttle stops at this station and transfer from a MARTA train to the shuttle is free. Once you've tapped your Breeze Card to exit Five Points station, it's ready for use on the shuttle. Some reasons I don't like Five Points station is because it's often a CF. Out of all the MARTA stations I've been to, it seems to have the most panhandlers, by a wide margin. More traffic means more people. More people means more problems. I once saw a traveler throw up inside this station and the couple walked away as if nothing happened. In the time I was there, nobody came to clean it up. I've also had racial insults hurled my way. Fun stuff. Functionally speaking, it's just like any other MARTA station. It gets the job done. If I'm at CNN Center/Centennial Olympic Park and I want to head north, instead of heading to the MARTA station located at the Georgia Dome/Philips Arena, I sometimes walk north and head to North Ave. station. It saves the time and hassle of dealing with Five Points station. read more

The floor was wet and I fell down a flight of stairs. Had to be taken by ambulance to the trauma department at the hospital. Back and foot are in bad shape. Called to file a claim and the person I spoke with said she could not get me to the claims department and to wait for someone to call me back. It's the busiest MARTA station and the only place to transfer from the North-South to the East-West lines. Timing is crucial, because if you miss a train, you can wait up to 25 minutes for the next one. (I find it's helpful to use the website to plan your trip. The trains aren't always on time, but are usually close enough so you can minimize your wait.) If possible, know where you're going at all times. Five Points generally has the most panhandlers on MARTA and folks wandering about looking lost make great targets. This is not the place to get lost in your smart phone. Stay alert! read more

I'm not prissy. Whatsoever. So I don't hate Five Points. I used to come through this train station four days a week for the good part of two years with no issues. Always arriving after 4 pm and leaving between 8 and 10 pm. It is the connecting point for the four MARTA train lines and it has become second nature for me to navigate the station so commenting about its intuitive design is futile. Yes, I admit that it can get bothersome when you are bombarded with bums asking for money or other things coming into and leaving the station. Walking by the sleeping bums in the immediate vicinity can also turn people off. But have you forgotten where you are? Yes, I agree that safety is a big issue for people who travel around this area. Nothing even remotely dangerous has yet to happen to me (and honestly, I hope never does) so I cannot say if more police officers need to be present. But considering the surrounding neighborhood, Five Points surprisingly does not smell like a Port-A-Potty. If any of you have used public transportation in other big cities (the ones with a really robust system), you will know that sometimes the grimmy environment is just a part of the experience. Embrace it. Learn how to carry yourself in these situations, so that you don't look like a scared p**** whenever you are encompassed by people who look unlike you. read more

Review 100 for me! And, I'm reviewing Marta (??) Ok, well here it goes...ahem... I only take Marta maybe 3-4 times per year, usually for big events. The last time was for the 2012 Peachtree Road Race so things at the station are not normal by any means. Not normal because you have 30,000+ (at least) trying to take Marta to Lenox and you don't have any of the normal traffic (from people going to work). MARTA as a whole was on point on July 4th, fo sho! Got to move a lot of people with the quickness! Anyways, Five Points is a pretty good stop if you have to get off here. Escalators and stairs were all in usable condition making it easy to move in and out of the station. Again, why am I am ranting on about a Marta station. I'm not sure. The station was very clean and staff were extremely helpful...I saw them directing foot traffic, assisting people with those stupid Marta card readers, and keeping the place in order. I like that they have the time clocks showing the train arrivals, too. So there, it's a train station and that's it. Whew, glad that's over with! read more

As I'd gotten to know Atlanta better and actually live within the city (or near enough to it), I'd gotten to know MARTA and its... interestingness. Being the crossroads of all currently existing rail lines, one has gateway access to the entirety of public transportation Atlanta and its vicinity has to offer as well as basically the heart of Downtown Atlanta and is historic and popular (if not sometimes seedy) offerings. One of my fraternity brothers who's a public transportation advocate and nut made it a point to stop here (though he wasn't able to see the Ride Store, MARTA's face-to-face customer services division, in action because it was a Saturday) because it is the heart of the system (with Lindbergh being the brains, lungs, and kidneys). Still, with a plethora of available machines, he was still able to get and load his new silver BreezeCard and load it with a two-day pass. When the Ride Store is open, the people (I've really only seen two maximum working at any point, which seems to be sufficient) are helpful but have a steely and somewhat curt demeanor. This may be partly because they have to probably face some very tough-to-deal-with characters who may lie. On that note, I can't lie: Five Points Station is probably the grittiest of the stations. It's a little odiferous, there are homeless people about (mostly outside by the raven statue and flecked about the main entrance), it's almost agoraphobia-inducing at lighter times of transit, and at peak times it's almost unbearably congested. Because all rail lines converge in one place, it may be overwhelming if one is trying to go to another station one hasn't been to before and one doesn't keep one's eyes open. This happened to me fairly recently when I'd needed to go to the Georgia State station, and if I didn't have my MARTA app to tell me it definitely is the Indian Creek-bound train I'm to take (I knew I had to go Eastbound, but I wasn't certain if any single-tracking was going on at the time), I might have had to get off the train and wait for the opposite one to come. That's another thing: it almost seems like Red/Gold and Blue/Green almost intersect at the same times because if I weren't a person who moved quickly anyway I probably would miss the next immediate connection between the two (climbing the grimy stairs to the Eastbound line, it was literally a minute after I'd gotten to the top that the Blue Line train stopped). Having mostly passed through Five Points going to or coming from the Airport station, I could tell even without the consistent audio cues ("...Five Points, punto de transbordo de todas las líneas de tren...") that I was stopping at Five Points because the carriage would fill to capacity (or maybe more?). The only thing that's seemed to have calmed down is the population of panhandlers and beggars. I've been thankful that Five Points Station seems to not be quite the (at least for AT&T on an iPhone) signal dead zone within the station that other stations seem to be (notably, in my experience, Midtown Station), so one can look up the next arriving train on the MARTA app (the digital notifiers other stations have don't seem to have quite the presence at Five Points) or just be on one's phone to pass the time while waiting for the next train. The station's greatest disenchantment, though, is not having enough of "the little things" æsthetically to capture one's attention visually (if you've been to Arts Center station, you know what I mean). This could be because the station is so busy, to-the-point, and passenger-transient that people just don't care. Then again, I haven't actually just walked the station to try seeing if there's anything more than the decorations to make it look like part of Historic Atlanta. Five Points Station serves its purpose, and I'm glad it exists, flaws and all. Hopefully it becomes a hub for an even greater MARTA system in the future. read more

Was traveling from the airport to my final destination, and had to change trains at five points. It was close to midnight in July, and it was HOT AS HELL down there! I couldn't believe it! Other than that, the station is easily signposted for out-of-towners like me, and yes it was safe. As for entertainment, there is always a character or two (just like any other city) and if you want a laugh read the "rules" when you get on the train... Ok, it took near 45 minutes for me to get here from Inman Park, just 3 stops away, with the majority of the time waiting for the train. How long does it take to get to the airport, 3 hours?!? And of course, there were the card machine issues with taking debit or credit cards...I had cash but the dumb people ahead of kept on trying to use their debit cards anyway, making the lines even longer. No wonder people in Atlanta hate public transportation...coming from a city where my world revolved around public transport (Boston), Marta is a big fail. As a first time visitor of Atlanta, my friends and I had to use the MARTA to get to and from the airport to the hotel. The MARTA was our cheapest option and convenient going both ways, a taxi would have been over $30 and a shared taxi would have been $29 each person. I appreciated the kind people at the stations and on the train who helped us get from the airport to our destination and from our hotel back to the airport. I feel that doing these reviews on places in atlanta will tend to be what used to be.Funny i remember when the only time you would see people of other races coming through five points was sunday to take the braves shuttle or passing through to get to the georgia dome/Congress Center.Five points has always been (where the hood hang). Surrounding areas of zone 3 & 4 brought the hood down there.Hell i hung there to after school and kicking it at underground atlanta. But just like underground things change,And more scraggers hang down at the points now.It just funny to see college students,and business come through there now.Of course unless you take your car you gotta go through five points to get northbound or southbound. Marta overall was decent. Easy ride from the Airport to anywhere in the City. They do however need more signs inside the stations especially at transfer hubs like five points.
